Astro Beyond Decoder

Previously all was fine on a LED TV. When I changed channels I can see the channel info display, see the menu to change language, subtitles, Astro settings etc.

However, after I changed to a new UHD TV yesterday, none of that info is displayed anymore. To further check, i connected my decoder to a another computer monitor and same thing. It looks like the decoder has changed some settings automatically. I can still Astro & flip channels, just the decoder UI has disappeared.

I am wondering whether anyone has encountered this problem before. Thanks.

Data Roaming in China

I will be travelling to Fujian Province, China for a week & would want to have access Internet access (including FB, Gmail, Whatsapp etc) during this trip.

I’ve considered local sim cards (China Unicom), but seems too much hassle with need to register, China firewall & other restrictions.

So I’m considering Celcom International Roaming 7-Day 3-in-1 Pass (uses China Mobile). Anyone knows whether I can access FB, Gmail, Whatsapp etc once in China?

Thanks.
Importance of Writing Mandarin in future

I'm just wondering whether the ability to write mandarin as a job skill will become necessary in the future?
The reason I'm asking this is that I'm making plans for my own children, with respect to language development.

In the case of Malaysia, at this moment, I can only see the ability to listen & speak Mandarin as useful, though not necessary.
Reading/writing seems optional and only required for certain jobs/industries. Most official written communication are in English/BM from what I've seen.
These anecdotal observations lead me to conclude that the ability to write mandarin does not seem to pay off in Malaysia.
However, when the China factor is factored in, I'm not quite sure whether this conclusion still holds true.

Appreciate your thoughts.
I understand there is no one-fits-all solution and that everybody's situation is unique. Thanks.

Need BB BIS Subsciption advice

Hi,

I'm new to BBs and actually got a BB phone as a gift. Need advice on what to consider in choosing a BB package.

Currently it has no BIS and works like a normal handphone. To use internet, I turn off the mobile network and use home wifi.
Clearly the BB's potential is not being fully utilised.

I intend to use BB for e-mail, social networking, light internet surfing (no streaming) (therefore need BIS) and surfing internet at home (youtube and light surfing).

There are things I'm still not clear on how BB plans work. PLease advice.

My questions:
-For e-mail, social networking apps I will need BIS. But for normal internet surfing does BIS cover that too? Or will I need a separate dataplan. Maxis and Digi has got attractive BIS offers (@ RM40 & RM58/68 per month but surely there's a catch right?

-When using home wifi for internet with wifi and mobile network set as 'on', will the data be downloaded based on the package or the home wifi? To make it clearer, say I'm watching youtube videos at home and I have a 250MB maxis package and home wifi on. How do I make sure BB is not utilising the 250MB data limit? I know I can turn mobile network off but if it is left on, how does BB select which connection to use. Hope this is clear.

Thanks.

I just want to know when did local chinese newspapers start using simplified characters in printing.

I know tt chinese schools started using simplified characters btw 1980-1982. So presumably simplified would have been widely used in newspapers in the 90s? I'd like to know. Thanks.
Deepavali vs Diwali

I know their the same thing.

When I was growing up, I only knew it as Deepavali. I guess it's how southern indians call it.

In the UK they use 'Diwali' instead, perhaps it's how northern indians call it?

Anyway I notice alot of Malaysians using Diwali more. What happened? Did Bollywood (which makes hindi films) popularise 'Diwali' in recent years?

Sorry for any factual mistakes. I stand corrected. Thanks.

I want to improve my canto listening skills so that I can understand TVB shows better.

I don't have much problem with modern day serials because language is contemporary.

But I have a problem understanding costume dramas (like those kungfu novel stuff) when they used too ancient and powerful language.

I think only chinese-literate people can understand properly.

But for those who speak 'fluent'cantonese but cannot read chinese how do you manage this???

Thanks
