Indonesia Imports First Live Breeding Pigs from Denmark to Rebuild Herd After ASF

Jakarta. Indonesia has imported 546 live breeding pigs from Denmark for the first time, seeking to accelerate the recovery of a national swine population that has yet to rebound from the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak that began in 2019.

Indonesian Monogastric Association (AMI) Chairman Sauland Sinaga said the arrival of the breeding stock marked an important step toward rebuilding the country's pig population and improving livestock productivity.

According to Sauland, Indonesia has lost around 4 million pigs annually, equivalent to roughly 400,000 breeding sows, since ASF struck the country. The outbreak has continued to weigh on the supply of breeding stock and domestic pork production.

He said the imports resulted from cooperation between the Indonesian and Danish governments, with private-sector involvement in procuring the breeding stock.

Sauland said all imported pigs had undergone stringent health procedures and were certified free from various animal diseases, including ASF. Danish veterinary authorities conducted inspections before shipment, while Indonesian quarantine officers carried out document and physical checks upon arrival.

Denmark is widely recognized for producing high-quality pig genetics, according to Sauland. The imported animals have high biosecurity standards, rapid growth rates, efficient feed conversion, and superior meat quality.

"The combination of Landrace and Yorkshire genetics is among the best options for accelerating the recovery of Indonesia's pig population," he said.

Beyond rebuilding the population, the introduction of superior breeding stock is expected to improve farm productivity.

Sauland said a sow in Indonesia currently produces an average of only eight marketable piglets per litter, while Landrace-Yorkshire crossbred stock could potentially produce up to 14 piglets per litter.

Higher productivity could improve farmers' incomes while accelerating efforts to meet demand for breeding stock across different regions, he added.

Sauland also dismissed concerns that imports of Danish breeding pigs could lead to monopolistic practices, arguing that the 546 pigs represented only a fraction of Indonesia's substantial domestic needs.

The 546 breeding pigs arrived at Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado on Tuesday. Upon arrival, quarantine officers conducted document and physical inspections before the pigs were transported in sterilized vehicles to an Animal Quarantine Installation for observation and further laboratory testing.

Before departing for Indonesia, all of the pigs had also undergone a 20-day quarantine period in Denmark as part of disease-control procedures.

Earlier in February, the government announced plans to import 580,000 grandparent stock (GPS) breeding chickens worth around $20 million from the United States under the Reciprocal Trade Agreement. The imports are intended to meet domestic demand for superior poultry genetics that are not yet available in Indonesia.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Will Harimau Malaya unveil their secret weapon today in the form of another player to strengthen the squad, just days before they open their campaign in the World Cup 2022/Asian Cup 2023 second-round qualifiers in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)?

For sure, the suspense of Malaysian football fans has been heightened after Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin indicated that Harimau Malaya would receive their 26th player to boost their mission in UAE this month.

“It’s now 8am in Dubai; wait for the arrival of the 26th player of Harimau Malaya,” he said in a 19-second video uploaded on the FAM Facebook and Youtube accounts today.

Since last week, talk about the possible entry of FC Midtylland player Dion Cools into Tan Cheng Hoe’s squad has been swirling among local fans.

This was after a statement was uploaded on the Danish club’s website saying that the 24-year-old Cools had earned his first call-up with the Malaysian national team.

However, FC Midtylland deleted his name after the matter went viral on social media, cutting the list of players with national call-ups to 15 from the earlier 16.

FAM had earlier tried to rope in the right back for national duty but Cools was said to be not ready then as he wished to focus on his career in Europe.

Cools, whose father is a Belgian and mother a Malaysian, is still eligible to represent Malaysia at the senior level.

The Kuching, Sarawak-born player has been fielded 32 times by FC Midtylland in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, including three times in the European Champions League competition.

The 1.85m-tall Cools played creditably against Liverpool FC players such as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota in Group D of the European Champions League this season.

Cools, who reportedly can also play as a central defender and left back, can give a good challenge to national players Matthew Davies, Syahmi Safari and Mohd Rizal Ghazali in the right back position.

Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) declared that a case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) has been confirmed. The case is for a male citizen aged 65 years who has been suffering from several chronic diseases. The patient has been admitted to the hospital to receive the necessary medical care in accordance with the national protocol to deal with confirmed or suspected cases of the disease.

Ministry of Public Health, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, is taking all necessary preventive and precautionary measures to control the disease and prevent it from spreading.

MERS is a viral respiratory disease that is caused by one of the coronaviruses (MERS-CoV), but it differs from the novel Coronavirus known as (COVID19), which has recently spread in several countries. Both viruses differ in terms of the source of infection, mode of transmission, and the disease severity. The Ministry of Public Health confirms that no cases of the novel Coronavirus (COVID19) have been diagnosed in Qatar so far.

Only three cases of MERS-CoV were registered in Qatar during the past two years. The Ministry of Public Health calls on all members of public, and especially people with chronic diseases or those with immunodeficiency disorders, to adhere to public hygiene measures. This includes washing the hands regularly with water and soap, using hand sanitizers, as well as avoiding close contact with camels and seeking medical advice when experiencing symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath.

The Rapid Response Team of the Health Protection and Communicable Disease Control is available round-the-clock to receive notifications or inquiries related to communicable diseases on its hotline numbers 66740948 or 66740951.
