D-Link DNS-323

Hoping to setup an enthusiasts' discussion on experience with expanding the usage of DNS-323 to more than using as-is.

Taken the following off http://wiki.dns323.info/information:beginner_s_faq

The Basics:

Q: What is a DNS-323?
A: Well, at a technical level the hardware specs are shown on this wiki start page. More generally the DNS323 is a little computer with no keyboard, mouse, or monitor connections, and with an empty space for you to put one or two 3.5” SATA hard disks.

You can create and share files from the hard disks over a network using Microsoft Windows-style network sharing (SMB/CIFS). That makes the DNS-323 a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.

There are also some built in services to share a printer if one is connected to the USB port, and also to share media files (pictures, music and video) using UPnP or iTunes protocols.

Q: A whole Wiki about that! Surely it must get more interesting?
A: Perhaps - it turns out that it is simple and safe to modify the start up of the DNS-323 so that you can change the configuration of the built in services, run additional services that are not started by default, or even run your own programs.

Q: So what hidden goodies are in there for me to enable?
A: The simplest modification is to start the built-in telnet server. By logging in to the DNS323 you discover that it is a computer running Linux. That is, the built in firmware is a customized Linux distribution put together by DLink.

Q: And then what kind of programs can I run?
A: Remember that there's no monitor, and the CPU is not fast. Regarding the CPU, it is not the same type as you use in your laptop or desktop computer, and so it won't run your copy of Microsoft Office.

The types of programs that you might want to run are network services or clients: some folks have installed web servers, others Bit Torrent Clients (and DLink have stated that some BitTorrent functionality will be built in to the next firmware release as well), and others have installed whole Linux distributions

[addedon]January 16, 2009, 4:20 pm[/addedon]Have any owners of this device tried updating it with the latest firmware version 1.06 from http://www.dlink.com.sg/ ? The Malaysian dlink site don't offer this download.

1.06 Feature Additions:
--------------------------
1. Supports 1.5 TB Hard Drives
2. USB port supports UPS monitoring
3. Add option to Manually or Automatically Rebuild Raid
4. UPnP AV supports Microsoft XBoX 360, Sony PlayStation 3
5. Support FTP over SSL/TLS

Released on 01/07/2009.

Am wondering about the stability of the latest version. Thanks!

[addedon]February 8, 2009, 11:17 pm[/addedon]Okay, in case anyone is interested... I have taken the plunge - upgraded to firmware 1.06 yesterday.

Seems to have resolved issue of not being able to delete/move bittorent downloaded files.

So far, so good...

hacked by stack and jadi

Hi,

Recently, my few Apache-based websites were hacked - index.html files were overwritten to display "hacked by stack and jadi" for those accessing it. Had to restore the files concerned. Hosting company just says that it is in the midst of plugging the gap.
I had noticed a few other sites fallen victim to the same hackers.

Tried looking up the net but there doesn't seem to be much info on this.

Any of you guys facing the same problem?

Need opinion on Sonic Gear Tatoo Duo 3

Hi!

I have looked up the Sonic Gear site and this Tatoo Duo 3 model caught my eye. Besides the good S/N ratio and frequency response (and price, of course!), it had 2 x Mic Input with Individual Mic Volume Control. I am thinking of limited vocal recording as a hobby and this may save me the need of a mic preamp. I have an imported Asus D2X PCIe sound card for this purpose.

Anyone care to share their experience on this speaker?

I have earlier bought a Sonic Gear Morro 200 which is a lousy one - you hear static noises in the silence and music played sounded awful (compared to my earlier cheap and ancient Quickshot speakers).

Thanks!
mattw
