KUCHING, Nov 1 — The Sarawak government is exploring potential collaboration with Russia in rocket and satellite launches, leveraging the state’s strategic location near the Equator.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the proposal was raised by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Malaysia, Naiyl M. Latypov, during a courtesy call last week.

“I mentioned that we (Sarawak) require more engineers and are prepared to explore collaboration to develop a larger pool of professionals in the field,” he said at the inauguration of the extension building of Gurdwara Sahib Kuching here today.

Abang Johari said Sarawak must capitalise on growing international interest in the state by implementing effective policies and ensuring clear development plans.

LONDON-based Cai Baochun used to make a hefty profit reselling Hermes’ famed Birkin bags for more than double their US$10,000 retail price. Now he has stopped stockpiling them as second-hand prices fall.

“I don’t want to lose money,” said Cai, who started selling the bags on online platforms such as Vestiaire Collective and on social media in 2020 and rode a pandemic-era luxury spending boom.

“The resale value of unworn Birkins sold as second-hand online has dropped by more than US$6,000 from its 2022 peak,” he added.

The decline reflects a broader shift in the market for one of luxury’s most exclusive products whose appeal and success have been driven by scarcity.

Increasing supply of Birkin bags in the second-hand market is depressing resale premiums, according to resellers, industry consultants and analysts interviewed by Reuters, raising questions about a strategy that helped propel Hermes to become one of the world’s most profitable luxury companies.

Named after the late British-French actor Jane Birkin, the handbag has been central to Hermes’ performance. Between 2015 and 2025, group annual sales tripled to 16bil (US$18bil) while its market value surged.

Last year, Hermes posted an operating margin of 41%, above that of rivals including Chanel, Kering-owned Gucci and LVMH’s leather and fashion division, which includes Louis Vuitton and Dior.

Resale market under pressure

All of that was underpinned by an aura of exclusivity.

Six resellers who source bags directly from Hermes shoppers said access to a Birkin is generally linked to spending on Hermes scarves, clothes and shoes, although the exact policy differs between regions and stores.

Two estimated customers typically spend US$10,000 to US$20,000 before being offered the Birkin or the Kelly, the brand’s other popular bag.

Hermes, which says a Birkin takes 15 hours to craft, does not disclose its selling policies or how many bags it makes.

It declined to comment for this story.

Of the nine Birkin resellers Reuters interviewed in the United States, Europe and Asia, six said resale prices had fallen over the past year as more handbags became available, while five reported softer demand.

Antoinette Hunter, who founded luxury handbag reseller Lilac Blue in 2007, said when she got the first request for a Birkin, few people knew the bag.

She eventually sourced one from a member of Japan’s royal family.

Acquiring Birkins is no longer a challenge, Hunter said, but it’s harder to make money from resales.

She said the price for an unworn black Birkin 25 bag, one of the most sought-after models, has fallen by around £4,000 (US$5,336) since 2022, to around £24,000.

Cai, who sells via Vestiaire Collective and Instagram, says his price for the bag is around £20,000.

Hermes sells the same model for £9,390 in Britain, a Hermes sales assistant in London said.

Although Hunter still sees plenty of demand for Hermes bags, particularly the most high-end ones, she said the decline in resale prices might dissuade some from buying directly from Hermes.

“If Hermes continues to raise the prices, and the prices on the resale market continue to drop, that margin gets squeezed, and perhaps it will become less appealing,” she said.

Brokerage Bernstein, which tracks individual auction results, said in a September note the resale price on Birkin 25 bags averaged about 1.7 times the retail tag in the third quarter, down from about 2.6 times at their 2022 peak.

Business model under scrutiny

Hermes’ leather goods division, which includes other handbag models, generates 44% of annual group revenue.

For more than a decade, limited supply and strong demand allowed Birkins to command hefty resale premiums, benefitting both Hermes and resellers as the prospects of making a profit via the secondary market encouraged Hermes clients to buy more from the brand.

“It was a win-win,” said Sarah Davis, founder of California-based Fashionphile.

The company said its Birkin listings have grown 32-fold in 15 years.

The company’s website currently lists 212 Birkins on sale.

Hermes has gradually expanded the production of its handcrafted items, opening one workshop per year on average.

Meanwhile, the rise of resale platforms such as Vestiaire Collective and The RealReal, alongside vintage boutiques with online shops and social media channels, has made it easier than ever to resell.

The bags and other Hermes items remain highly sought after, resellers said, but the brand is showing some strain.

Hermes’ shares have lost nearly 40% of their market value this year, making the brand one of the worst performers among listed luxury companies.

Earlier this month, UBS analysts downgraded Hermes shares to “sell”, saying that growing secondary-market supply of Birkins and Kellys could weaken the brand’s scarcity-driven business model.

“We believe the nature of the business is changing,” they said in a note, estimating that the number of the handbags listed for sale worldwide is now six to seven times higher than before the pandemic.

The company is expected to report quarterly sales growth of 5.2%, which would mark its weakest quarterly growth in six years, according to Visible Alpha estimates.

While leather goods revenue is still expected to grow by 10%, demand for clothing, silk scarves and perfumes is cooling, a sign fewer customers are making the purchases traditionally required to buy a Birkin at a later stage, two equities analysts and two industry consultants said.

Asked in July whether Hermes should slow production to protect the brand, Hermes chief executive officer Axel Dumas told reporters that some people feared making too many bags would hurt its exclusivity, while others questioned why it was not making more.

He added that output depended largely on the number of fully trained artisans and available high-quality leather.

Not all resellers see weakness.

Davis said prices for the bag on the Fashionphile platform have remained firm and even risen slightly this year, pointing to renewed attention generated by Norwegian soccer star Erling Haaland’s handbag collection. — Reuters

SIBU (Oct 31): Pelawan could see a battle between two Tiangs in the upcoming 13th Sarawak State Election, with incumbent Datuk Michael Tiang potentially facing a challenge from the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) David Tiang.

Michael, who won the seat under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) banner in the previous state election, is expected to seek re-election, while David, 27, is among the names being considered by DAP.

Relatively new to the local political scene, David completed his primary and secondary education in Sibu before pursuing a degree in international politics at Zhejiang University in China.

After graduating, he joined DAP and was later appointed special affairs officer to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming following Pakatan Harapan’s entry into the federal government after the 2022 General Election.

During his tenure at the ministry, David worked closely with Sibu MP Oscar Ling to secure development allocations for the Sibu Municipal Council, including funding for streetlights in urban areas.

He also assisted in processing applications from temples and churches in Sibu for maintenance grants under the ministry’s programme to repair non-Islamic places of worship, with several religious institutions subsequently receiving funding.

David also gained some campaign experience during the 2022 General Election, when he was transferred from DAP headquarters to Sibu to assist with election activities.

However, he is not the only potential candidate being considered by DAP, with Irene Wong Li Ting, a special assistant to Ling, also among the names identified.

The party’s final choice is expected to emerge following a Sarawak DAP meeting on Nov 1.

Outside the two major coalitions, lawyer Priscilla Lau is also speculated to be considering a bid for Pelawan and is said to have been making preparations for the campaign.

The seat is currently held by Michael, who narrowly defeated DAP’s David Wong Kee Woan by just 100 votes in the previous state election.

Michael polled 4,413 votes against Wong’s 4,313 in a five-cornered contest marked by low voter turnout.

Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) candidate Dr Loh Chong Nguan finished third with 3,757 votes, followed by Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Tiew Yen Huon with 3,146 votes, while Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi) candidate Janet Lau Wei Ping received 302 votes.

KAPIT: A newborn baby boy was found in critical condition after he was believed to have been buried alive near a rented house at Jalan Airport here last night (Oct 27).

The baby was found lying face down with part of his body buried in the ground by a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers at about 11.30pm.

He was still crying when the officers found him.

Kapit District Police Chief DSP Rohana Nanu confirmed the discovery, which prompted immediate action to rescue the newborn.

Based on preliminary information, police mounted a search operation after receiving information about the incident.

The baby, who was in critical condition, was rushed to Kapit Hospital before being transferred to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, sources said police had identified a female suspect believed to be involved in the case.

However, police have yet to record her statement as she is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for the exposure or abandonment of a child under the age of 12 by a parent or person responsible for the child’s care

KUALA LUMPUR: A flight attendant pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here on Monday (Oct 26) to two charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, causing the death of a supervisor and injuring a lorry driver in an accident on Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar here.

Mohd Iman Nafiz Fong Mohd Sabirin, 26, is accused of driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 64mg per 100ml of blood, exceeding the legal limit of 50mg per 100ml, and causing the death of Faris Irfan Fazli, 29, on Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar heading towards Jalan Parlimen at about 4.09am on Saturday.

The charge was framed under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020), which provides for imprisonment of between 10 and 15 years and a fine of between RM50,000 and RM100,000, upon conviction.

If convicted, the accused may also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least 10 years from the date of conviction.

He also faces a charge of causing injuries to Ahmad Zakiyamani Zakaria @ Yusuff, 49, in the same incident.

The charge, under Section 44(1A)(b) of the same Act, carries a prison term of between seven and 10 years and a fine of between RM30,000 and RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least 10 years from the date of conviction, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry proposed bail of RM25,000 for each charge, with one surety, as well as the suspension of the accused's driving licence and impounding of his passport, taking into account that he worked as a flight attendant and could pose a flight risk.

Defence counsel Mohd Anif Rafih applied for the bail to be reduced to RM15,000 for each charge. He did not object to the prosecution's additional condition that the accused's driving licence be suspended but opposed the requirement for his passport to be surrendered.

According to The Star, the dispute yesterday centred on constituencies previously contested by MCA, which the party claimed had been allocated to other parties despite the absence of formal negotiations and mutual consent.

“MCA cannot be pushed around. We are a political party and we deserve to be treated with dignity. How can decisions be made on MCA’s behalf without our agreement when the MCA president is still here?” MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong told the English daily

The walkout involved Wee, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and representatives from six MCA divisions in Melaka during the event held at the Melaka International Trade Centre.

According to Wee, MCA had been informed by Barisan Nasional’s executive secretary on Friday night that the gathering would focus solely on the launch of the coalition’s election machinery and would not include any announcement of candidates.

However, upon arriving at the venue, party members alerted him to the possibility that candidates could be unveiled.

He said MCA later discovered that the programme included a candidate announcement segment, prompting the party leadership to seek clarification from Barisan Nasional leaders.

Wee also said MCA had learnt during a meeting two days earlier that seats traditionally contested by the party were being reassigned to other coalition partners, The Star reported.

The MCA president said he objected to the proposed arrangement and that the party subsequently sent a formal letter to Barisan Nasional on Friday expressing its opposition to the seat allocation.

He said MCA’s central political bureau met on Saturday morning and decided the party would still attend the event in its capacity as a Barisan Nasional component member. However, the inclusion of a candidate announcement prompted the delegation to leave the venue.

Dr Wee described the episode as unprecedented in his political experience, arguing that MCA had not been given sufficient opportunity to discuss the allocation before being informed that the matter had effectively been settled.

He said negotiations in Melaka involved only one meeting with other parties before the allocation process was concluded, and questioned how MCA could be expected to endorse an arrangement reached without its agreement.

He told The Star that the walkout was not intended as a boycott of the event, but rather a signal that MCA would not accept decisions made without consultation.

Wee also stressed the disagreement was limited to the seat allocation exercise in Melaka and should not be interpreted as reflecting MCA’s overall relationship with Barisan Nasional.

He added that cooperation at the federal level, as well as seat negotiations in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, had been conducted in a manner that respected all parties involved.

Dr Wee stressed that the walkout was not intended to boycott the event but to make it clear that MCA would not accept decisions made without consultation.

He also clarified that the dispute concerned the seat-allocation process in Melaka and should not be taken as a reflection of MCA's broader cooperation with Barisan.

He said cooperation at Federal level, as well as seat negotiations in Johor and Negri Sembilan, were conducted with mutual respect.

Dr Wee said the Melaka situation was different because MCA's state and central leaders were not properly consulted.

He called on Barisan's central leadership to address the dispute, adding that MCA had already conveyed its position and would continue discussions over the next few days.

"We still have time before nomination day and I hope this can be corrected," he said.

Asked if MCA would withdraw from contesting in Melaka, Dr Wee said the party had yet to make a decision and would assess developments over the next few days.

He added that MCA could not accept seats it previously contested handed to another party without negotiations, stressing that candidate selection should follow the party's internal procedures and receive its consent.

MCA currently holds two seats in the Melaka state assembly: Klebang and Machap Jaya.

In the 2021 Melaka state polls, MCA contested seven seats – Machap Jaya, Klebang, Ayer Keroh, Kesidang, Kota Laksamana, Bandar Hilir and Bemban – winning Machap Jaya and Klebang.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — DAP national publicity secretary Yeo Bee Yin has cautioned the federal government against rushing into a blanket nationwide ban on the Waze navigation application, warning that a sudden prohibition would disrupt daily commutes, logistics, and gig-economy livelihoods for more than six million active Malaysian motorists.

The Puchong MP expressed serious concern over remarks by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who announced yesterday that Putrajaya has not ruled out a total ban once viable domestic alternatives mature.

“A policy decision of this scale must not be made in haste or taken lightly. It directly impacts over six million active Malaysian road users who depend on real-time navigation daily for their livelihoods, commutes, and logistics,” she said in a statement.

The prime minister's comments followed a circular issued on Wednesday barring all civil servants from using Waze over fears that official logistics and personal movement data could be harvested by the Israeli regime. Waze has dismissed the data security allegations as "completely false", asserting that its global operations adhere to strict international privacy standards.

While Anwar took to Facebook yesterday to apologise for public inconvenience, he maintained that national security cannot be compromised. He also urged motorists to exercise patience with the government's homegrown alternative, Tuju, which the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and its private developer are currently refining.

Today, Yeo argued that before contemplating a nationwide blackout, Putrajaya must address critical technical and geopolitical inconsistencies.

On regional security, she questioned why Gulf Cooperation Council states, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait, continue to permit Waze despite being situated adjacent to the conflict zone while enforcing stringent national security laws.

Addressing data sovereignty, Yeo asked whether the government had explored technical ring-fencing through direct, high-level discussions with Waze's US parent company, Alphabet. She noted that Putrajaya could negotiate to mandate local data residency, ensuring Malaysian telemetry and location records are hosted securely on sovereign domestic servers.

Yeo also cast doubt on whether a statutory regulator like LLM can build and maintain a crowd-sourced navigation engine capable of matching global technology firms. Real-time dynamic routing and low-latency road hazard updates, she said, require immense computing scale, continuous algorithmic refinement, and specialized software engineering.

She pointed to South Korea as a cautionary precedent. While Seoul restricts foreign mapping platforms under its Geospatial Information Management Act, its domestic navigation leaders, Naver Map and KakaoMap, were built and scaled by multi-billion-dollar private tech corporations rather than government agencies.

“All in all, a reactionary ban risks unnecessary public disruption, economic friction for the gig economy, and reputational damage to Malaysia’s digital landscape,” she said.

“We urge the National Security Council (MKN) to consult industry experts and navigation technology specialists as well as engage relevant stakeholders transparently before deciding on the way forward.”

At least seven people were killed and another 40 injured after gunmen opened fire on a church in Jordan’s southern Karak province, in an unprecedented attack that has left the nation stunned.

The “unidentified” gunmen have not yet been captured, the public security agency said in a news conference Friday afternoon, adding that the shooting was a terrorist attack against Christians attending a funeral in the town of Hmoud.

Jordan’s King Abdullah said Jordan will “harshly” respond against those responsible for the “terrorist act.”

“The blood of Jordanians is precious, and we will strike those who transgress against this country with an iron fist,” the king said on X.

The Prime Minister of Jordan Jafar Hassan said all state agencies are working to bring the perpetrators to justice, according to the kingdom’s official news agency Petra.

“What happened in Karak was the result of extremist terrorist ideology rooted in takfir (declaring others to be infidels), and we will not allow society to go down this path,” Petra quoted Hassan as saying.

The casualty toll was revised several times throughout the day as more information surfaced.

Jordan’s Health Minister Ibrahim al-Budour said two of those wounded are in critical condition.

A witness told state-run Al-Mamlaka television that one attacker was carrying an AK-47 assault rifle, and the shooting continued for several minutes.

Another witness speaking to CNN confirmed that the attack lasted a long time with gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar” while targeting the courtyard of the church, where most people were standing.

“It was a massacre … I did not imagine I would get out alive,” she told CNN, saying she had to hide behind the altar, along with other mourners, to survive the attack.

“They struck people who were gathered to grieve and mourn,” she said. “I never ever imagined anything like this would ever happen anywhere in Jordan”

Security camera footage circulating on social media showed three gunmen opening fire on the street before heading toward the church.

The town has been home to a predominantly Christian community for centuries. On Friday, people had gathered at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church to mourn the death of a community member.

“Some guys were standing outside the church before two people got out of a vehicle and started shooting,” Tamer Halasa, an eyewitness told Al-Mamlaka television.

Dozens were believed to be inside the church, witnesses told state media.

“We were more than 150 people inside and outside the church,” Halasa added.

The region reacts
Jordanian government ministers and regional officials quickly condemned the shooting. Sectarian attacks in Jordan are rare, with the Christian community making up just 2% of the total population of the country.

Condemnation from elsewhere in the region also came pouring in following the attack.

“On behalf of the American people, we offer our most heartfelt condolences to the victims and survivors of the terror attack today at a church in Karak, Jordan,” the US embassy in Jordan said, expressing its solidarity with the Jordanian king.

The embassy said US citizens should expect to see higher police presence in many parts of Jordan including malls and foreign embassies in Amman.

“We remind U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor Jordanian authorities for breaking developments, such as Jordan’s Directorate of Public Security,” the embassy said in the travel advisory.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, Hammoud residents, all those affected by the shooting.

“The national cohesion of the Jordanian people serves as a vital safeguard against terrorism, extremism, and any attempts to sow division or discord,” said the patriarchate, which leads Catholics living in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Cyprus.

Cairo’s Al-Azhar Institute, Sunni Islam top learning center, also condemned the attack.

“This crime contradicts the teachings of the Abrahamic religions and reveals that its perpetrators are devoid of all compassion, humanity and morality,” the institute’s Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb said in a post on social media.

The Iraqi government said the attack “demonstrates that terrorism is a root of evil that the Iraqi people have previously suffered from and confronted with determination and strength.”

“It calls on us to stand united against all voices that threaten the security of our societies and undermine civil peace,” the Iraqi statement added.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 61-year-old architect has claimed trial to a charge of molest involving the 18-year-old son of a senior police officer.

Datuk Saiful Anuar Abdul Aziz pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before magistrate Siti Nurul Ain Ariffin here on Friday (Oct 23).

According to the charge, Saiful Anuar was accused of using criminal force against the victim by groping his body parts with the intention to outrage his modesty.

The offence was allegedly committed at a sauna in a gym at a shopping mall in Taman Melawati at 7.10pm on Sunday.

Saiful Anuar was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code and faces a maximum 10 years imprisonment or fine or whipping or any two of the combination, if convicted.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor M Ramanathan Alias Ashwin proposed bail at RM15,000 in one surety.

He also asked the court to impound the accused's passport.

Lawyer K Theivaendran asked for a lower bail amount, citing his client’s need to support his aged mother, 89, and a younger sibling.

"I object to the prosecution’s application, asking for the accused to surrender his passport. My client has projects abroad, including in Riyadh.

"There is no risk of him absconding," Theivaendran said.

Ramanathan replied that there certainly was a flight risk as the accused has overseas projects.

Magistrate Siti Nur Ain fixed bail at RM9,000 in one surety and allowed the additional bail condition applied by the prosecution.

The case is fixed for mention on Nov 26.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — DAP MP for Bagan Lim Guan Eng has described the locally developed Tuju navigation app as a “national embarrassment,” calling for accountability over its rollout as a Waze replacement.

In a press statement issued today, Lim said that whoever convinced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Tuju was technologically adequate should be punished.

According to Lim, user feedback indicates that relying on the app currently leaves users worse off, and he has received complaints regarding its ineffectiveness.

“Malaysians support replacing Waze applications that endanger security risks concerning information and data on citizens’ movements, when it is subject to the laws of the Israeli government, but not an application that is defective at best and at failure at worst,” he said.

While acknowledging support for protecting national security interests, Lim stressed that proper due diligence and stringent testing are necessary to ensure any replacement can match Waze’s basic navigation functions.

He also questioned the cost of developing the app and whether its designers had sought expert advice from professionals in the US, Europe, China or Japan.

Lim stated that the Prime Minister had been “wrongly advised” on the matter.

He urged Anwar to return to the drawing board and task the National Cyber Security Committee (NSC) with developing a vastly improved version of Tuju.

“How can the NSC be expected to do its job to ward off evolving cyber threats, strengthen the nation’s preparedness and digital sovereignty when it cannot even fulfil users’ road

SEPANG, Oct 22 — The government has urged Malaysians to uninstall Waze over concerns that users’ personal and movement data could fall under Israeli jurisdiction.

National Security Council director-general for National Security Raja Datuk Nushirwan Zainal Abidin, however, said there will not be a blanket ban issued to preserve individual freedom of choice.

“The government is balancing national security considerations with human rights, freedom of expression and the freedom to choose.

“We always need to strike a balance between security and human rights consideration and freedom of expression, freedom to choose,” Nushirwan told a press conference at the National Cyber Security Agency (Nasca), National Security Council (NSC) headquarters.

Nushirwan said the concerns went beyond technology and instead concerned the legal framework governing the collection and use of personal data, pointing to Waze Mobile Ltd’s terms of use, which stipulate that the agreement is governed by Israeli law.

He said the government would not compromise on the use of Malaysians’ data and the sovereignty of national information.

To illustrate the importance of controlling data, Nushirwan compared it to fuel for a car, saying applications and artificial intelligence platforms depended on data to function.

“If we look at a car, no matter how great the model is, without fuel you cannot use the car, so this fuel is similar to data — data is actually the fuel for any application or AI platform, including Waze.

“If we supply data indiscriminately, it is as though we are relying on a source of fuel that we cannot trust,” he said.

Nushirwan said Malaysia needed to own and control its citizens’ data to protect national information sovereignty.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians could face difficulties seeking legal redress in disputes involving Waze, as the navigation application’s terms of service are governed by Israeli law, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said.

He said the legal jurisdiction governing Waze was among the concerns behind the government’s decision to prohibit civil servants from using the application for official duties.

“When we use an application, we agree to certain terms and conditions.

“If we look at that agreement, it is clear that it falls under the jurisdiction of Israeli law,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Gobind said this raised concerns about whether Malaysians would be able to pursue legal remedies should disputes involving the application arise.

“That becomes a problem for us because if something happens, there is no certainty that we, as Malaysians, can obtain legal remedies through the legal process in Israel.

“That is why we have the ban on Waze, specifically concerning legal and security aspects,” he said.

Beyond the legal implications, Gobind also raised concerns about the application’s handling of users’ location data, citing information suggesting that their movements could still be determined even when Waze was not actively being used.

“From the information I have received, even if we are not using Waze, our movements can still be determined through the application,” he said.

However, Gobind clarified that the restriction applied only to civil servants using the application for official duties and did not extend to the general public.

“Firstly, the ban applies to government employees and civil servants as defined under the Federal Constitution. It does not apply to all Malaysians.

“Secondly, it only applies to official matters,” he said.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong), who raised concerns about the locally developed TuJu navigation application following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recommendation that Malaysians switch from Waze.

Young Syefura said she had downloaded TuJu herself but found its functionality disappointing, reflecting concerns raised by other users about the application’s readiness as an alternative.

Gobind said TuJu, developed with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) under the Works Ministry, initially focused on providing highway traffic information but was being expanded to offer wider navigation services.

“Now, it is being expanded so that its services can go beyond monitoring traffic flow on highways,” he said.

Acknowledging the need for improvements, Gobind said the Digital Ministry would explore cooperation through GovTech to strengthen TuJu, PINTAZ and other navigation services.

“Besides TuJu, we can also use other applications such as Google Maps.

“There has been no statement saying that we can only use TuJu,” he said.

Dr Rundi: Selangau pig farming area to begin operations in 2027

KUCHING (Oct 20): The Pig Farming Area (PFA) in Selangau is expected to begin operations in 2027, with full completion targeted for 2028, said Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

He said the PFA consists of 233 hectares with an investment of RM200 million, and has a breeding capacity of 12,000 sows annually.

“The swine industry remains an important contributor to Sarawak’s export earnings. Since 2017, the Pasir Puteh PFA has exported more than 350,000 porkers valued at RM312 million to Singapore, maintaining a reliable supply of approximately 2,500 live pigs per week.

“In addition, Sarawak is exporting an additional 500 live pigs weekly to Selangor since 2025.

“In 2026, Sarawak’s swine industry generated RM158.75 million in export earnings from the export of 109,606 live pigs,” said Dr Rundi in his ministerial winding up speech.

He said to further strengthen domestic production and enhance food security, Sarawak is advancing the development of two major swine farming facilities including the PFA in Selangau and development of Modern Pig Farm (MPF) in Ensengei, Serian.

The MPF in Esengei Serian covers 202 hectares operated by a private commercial venture with an investment of RM385 million.

“The facility will adopt a closed-house farming system with a capacity of 80,000 pigs by 2030 including modern abattoir. The Phase 1 that was completed last year has produced 700 to 800 porkers monthly.

“These developments are aligned with Sarawak’s target of increasing annual pork production to 860,000 porkers, valued at RM1.5 billion, by 2030,” he said.

Dr Rundi added the state continues to strengthen biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction and spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and African Swine Fever (ASF), while enhancing protocols to facilitate safe and sustainable pork exports to regional markets.
