JERUSALEM, July 13 — A senior UN official today accused Hamas of interfering with humanitarian deliveries in Gaza and intimidating aid workers, warning that the group’s actions were making relief operations increasingly dangerous.

Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas continues to control parts of Gaza, even after Israeli forces expanded their presence across the majority of the territory.

In a statement, UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov, said he “strongly” condemned the obstruction of humanitarian operations by Gaza’s de facto authorities, referring to Hamas.

Hamas’s actions “endangered humanitarian personnel, intimidated workers delivering life-saving food assistance and disrupted life-saving humanitarian operations”, he said.

Armed men linked to Hamas allegedly forced their way into a food distribution point in Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, the UN statement said.

Militants “also entered a WFP (World Food Programme) warehouse and reportedly assaulted two truck drivers who were delivering humanitarian supplies”, it added.

Alakbarov said “these incidents are not isolated” and “reflect an increasingly dangerous pattern of intimidation, violence and obstruction, including smuggling attempts, targeting and abusing humanitarian operations”.

He warned that such actions were hampering the delivery of life-saving assistance at a time when civilians across Gaza faced severe hardships.

An official from the Hamas-run interior ministry in Gaza rejected the accusations, calling them unfounded.

“These are baseless accusations. The police and security forces continue to protect aid trucks and distribution centres and facilitate the work of international and humanitarian organisations,” he told AFP.

He said “the police will not allow any attacks on humanitarian workers”.

COGAT, the Israeli defence ministry body in charge of civilian matters in the Palestinian territories, slammed Hamas over the latest accusation.

“This constitutes further clear evidence that Hamas cynically exploits the humanitarian space and the aid intended for the residents of the Gaza Strip for its own purposes,” Cogat said in a statement.

A ceasefire was reached in Gaza between Israel and Hamas in October following two years of war, which was sparked by the Palestinian militants’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The second phase of the ceasefire, which was to involve Hamas’s disarmament and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, has been stalled for months.

Israeli forces have expanded their presence in recent months, taking control of more than 60 per cent of the territory.

Hamas still exerts control over the remaining area, but last week announced it was dissolving its 15-member body that had governed the strip for nearly two decades.

Violence continues in Gaza despite the ceasefire.

At least 1,098 Palestinians have been killed since the truce took effect, according to the territory’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Putrajaya has proposed seven sweeping changes to a key reform Bill that it said would entirely isolate its top public prosecutor from executive and political influence, with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said saying she hopes to have it tabled in Parliament’s Lower House this week.

One of the major proposal is placing the power to appoint future public prosecutors on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who will act strictly on the independent advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission (SPKP) without the involvement of the prime minister or the Cabinet.

Parliament will also be empowered to vet candidates and provide direct input before the appointment is finalised. - how is this a good thing? so parliament can veto candidates not in their pockets for example?? wtf???

Azalina said in a statement the seven new safeguards underscores the Anwar government’s to reform.

“This is clear evidence of the Madani Government’s firm commitment to strengthening the rule of law, institutional independence, and public confidence in the nation’s justice system,” she said.

“It marks another significant step toward realizing the institutional reform agenda in a responsible, inclusive, and constitutional manner.”

The Parliamentary Special Select Committee’s (JKPK) report on the Federal Constitution Amendment Regarding the Separation of the Roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor is expected be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow first before.

Azalina’s office said whether or not the revised Bill can be tabled this week itself will hinge on the Lower House approving the report.

Other safeguards in the revised Bill is a formal Prosecutors’ Code of Ethics and empowering Parliament with the explicit constitutional authority to enact further enabling legislation to strengthen the institution over time.

The PSC convened seven times after the Bill was pushed back following protests from both government and opposition lawmakers, who said they were concerned that the draft appeared to have retain the PM’s influence over the appointment process.

The planned changes are part of a broader legislative reform to officially separate the dual roles of the Attorney General — who will remain the government’s chief legal adviser — and the Public Prosecutor, who will hold independent criminal prosecutorial powers.

The major constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, Malaysia’s lower house of parliament, to pass into law.

KUCHING: AirBorneo has opened ticket sales for its first international service, with daily flights between Kuching and Singapore set to begin on July 22, marking a major milestone in the airline’s expansion beyond Malaysia.

Ticket sales will open at 10 am on July 13, with all-in one way Economy Class fares starting from RM399 and Business Class fares from RM871, inclusive of airport taxes and fuel surcharges.

MACC freezes 14 bank accounts, seizes RM1.4m assets in foreign affairs syndicate probe

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen 14 bank accounts, comprising five company accounts and nine personal accounts belonging to several individuals, involving an estimated RM1.1 million, following investigations into a syndicate suspected of committing various offences related to foreign nationals affairs.

According to a source, the accounts were frozen as part of investigations involving 33 individuals, including enforcement officers, civil servants, members of the public and foreign nationals for suspected involvement in offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

These include cases involving undocumented foreign nationals and the misuse of social visit passes for employment.

The source said an integrated operation carried out on Wednesday by the MACC Intelligence Division, together with MACC offices in Putrajaya, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, also led to the seizure of various assets estimated to be worth about RM1.4 million.

Among the assets seized were cash, foreign currencies, luxury cars, motorcycles, gold, various types of jewellery, watches, luxury handbags and mobile phones.

“To date, nine investigation papers have been opened. Through the integrated operation conducted in four states on Wednesday, MACC has carried out seizures and frozen the accounts of the companies and individuals involved.

“Yesterday, MACC also detained another enforcement officer at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to assist in investigations. However, he has been released on MACC bail,” the source said.

On Wednesday, through Op Layer (MACC Putrajaya), Op Dalang (MACC Selangor), Op Raider (MACC Negeri Sembilan) and Op Genuine (MACC Melaka), 38 individuals were arrested, with 33 remanded to assist in investigations. They comprised enforcement officers, civil servants, members of the public and foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman, when contacted, confirmed the matter and said the case is being investigated under Sections 16(b)(A), 17(a), 17(b) and 18 of the MACC Act 2009. — Bernama

Sarawak, Bangladesh explore closer cooperation

KUCHING: Sarawak and Bangladesh are exploring closer cooperation in agriculture, food security, renewable energy and higher education.

The potential areas of collaboration were discussed during a courtesy call by Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury on Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Astana Negeri Sarawak today (July 6).

Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, received Manjurul Karim and his wife, Farzana Nasrin.

During the meeting, Wan Junaidi and Manjurul Karim exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties in economic cooperation, trade, education and human capital development.

“They also discussed opportunities for strategic collaboration in agro-based agriculture, food security, renewable energy and higher education,” Astana Sarawak said in a statement.

“Wan Junaidi emphasised the importance of strengthening education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to support future economic growth.

“He said STEM formed the foundation for high technology industries such as hydrogen energy, green technology, carbon capture and aerospace, while producing a competitive workforce capable of driving Sarawak’s development.”

Also accompanying the High Commissioner was Third Secretary of the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia, SM Sayem.

It added the meeting reflected the shared commitment of both sides to further strengthen ties and explore mutually beneficial areas of cooperation.

Wan Junaidi and Fauziah also expressed their appreciation to Manjurul Karim and his delegation for the courtesy call and hoped relations between Sarawak and Bangladesh would continue to grow for the mutual benefit of both sides.
