[REVIEW] IPRO Sense Gii Plus review

Original review at Pokde.net. Like our FB page for the latest reviews and news!

IPRO is a Malaysian company that caters to the needs of the Malaysian market with their line-up of mobile devices. The company has quite a following among those looking for low-cost devices as most of IPRO products come at affordable prices. And the device we are reviewing today is no different. A low-cost device meant to bring quality without the hefty price tag usually associated with good products.

Unboxing
It comes in a generic looking box with the necessary labelling, and that’s it. But people don’t pay to see the box, people pay to get what’s in the box. Besides the phone, you get a 800 mA charger (really? 800 mA?), some in-ear buds and a charging cable as well as a complementary flip case. The free case is a nice touch as I doubt you will be able to get third-party casings for this device.

Appearance
Next, the phone. Well, as I have mentioned in my hands-on experience at the previous IPRO media gathering, I was really impressed with the build quality of the IPRO Sense Gii Plus. And once again, with it in my hands, I am awestruck by the awesome build quality.

Go through the slideshow to see the phone. Or you can also open up the hands-on post for more photos of that awesome metal band. Heck it impresses me to no end to have a metal frame in a RM299 phone when Samsung didn’t use metal all the way until they released the Note 4, at RM2499. LOL. The solid build quality looks sturdy enough to survive more than just a few drops. Under the glossy metallic back cover lies a 1800mAh battery that isn’t great by today’s standards, but should be fairly adequate to keep this dual-core smartphone alive for quite a while. We will discuss it later. Support for microSD card expansion (I am not exactly sure what’s the maximum size, but my 64GB Sandisk Ultra didn’t work), and dual SIM functionality. If you observe carefully, the SIM1 slot accepts full sized SIM cards while the SIM2 slot accepts microSIM cards. As all my SIM cards are already cut to the microSIM size, I have no way of testing dual SIM functionality in this phone.

Specifications
Mediatek MT6572 dual-core 1.3Ghz
512MB RAM
5.5″ 720p IPS Display
4GB internal (expandable with microSD up to 16GB)
Camera: 5MP main, 2MP front
Android KitKat 4.4.2
Dual-SIM capability
1800 mAh battery

User Experience
Starting up the phone, you are greeted with a bright orange screen with the IPRO logo. Then you will reach the Android log-in process standard to all Android phones, and after that you will arrive at the home screen. IPRO has been wise to not load the launcher with tonnes of widgets by default like I have seen a certain other manufacturer does.

The first thing I wanted to do was to run Antutu benchmark on it, but I just couldn’t get it to finish the benchmark. It would always crash out without any error message and I didn’t have a score. But on the other hand, we all know that it will not top benchmarks with the dual-core and 512MB RAM chugging within the metal frame. So I went ahead and started using the phone as it should be, as a phone.

Overall performance is full of stutters, not really smooth so you don’t get the fluid transitions you might get in a (much) pricier phone. But given the price there will definitely be compromises.

The buttons on this device requires a firm press to register. No wobble or any unwanted movement is observed from the buttons. The home button doesn’t wake the phone, so those who are used to using Samsung devices might find this a bit weird.

And the multitasking button doesn’t exactly function as that. It is actually a menu button but labelled as a multitasking button. The actual multitasking window comes up when you long-press the home button. There doesn’t seem to be a way to access Google Now.

The screen is very nice. It’s a 5.5″ IPS panel right there. Colors are bright but a bit on the cool side. You can see individual pixels if you look hard enough at it. But from a regular distance it is just alright. Text is rendered quite sharply on this device. Sadly the phone is unable to play 720p .mp4 movies from my collection. Would have made a good device to watch movies on with that screen.

I installed Whatsapp, and noticed the first software quirk. The status bar fades white, rendering most of the notification icons on it very hard to see. A small quirk but annoying nonetheless. This issue also appears in many of IPRO’s built in apps like the dailer, messaging and browser.

Music listening is a slight problem with this phone. There is a kind of echo-ey effect to it that makes the music sound bad on my Piston 2.1. But it supports FLAC, MP3, M4A formats so you should be good to go if you can bear with it. The loudspeaker is capable of outputting pretty acceptable sound quality. As long as you keep it around 2 notches below maximum volume, it sounds pretty good. At maximum volume some distortion is heard.

Call quality is adequate but not really the best. You hear a tinny version of the person on the other end. But the he/she hears you loud and clear. Browsing the web with this phone is generally a sluggish experience with pages loading rather slowly. Scrolling is quite smooth even on image heavy sites. Pinch to zoom works as expected.

Camera performance is very poor. All the details are smudged as you can see you can barely make out the keys on my keyboard.

Battery life was quite good. With WiFi on all the time, and some Clash of Clan (yes, it supports CoC quite well), Whatsapp and some browsing, I am getting more than a day’s battery life like that with more than 4 hours of on-screen time and the battery is still at 60%. I think battery life is especially important for low-end phones where the user will be using it for critical calls and messaging and may not have the liberty of being near a charger. I believe the compromise of pure horsepower for battery life is a good call.

Conclusion
The IPRO Sense Gii Plus is a good phone. Solid build quality, issue-free and has excellent looks. What else can you ask for by paying on RM299? Yes there are faster phones out there for RM299, but I doubt there are any that are as well built as this IPRO Sense Gii Plus. The ASUS Zenfone 4 is now currently going for RM299 but it has a much smaller 4″ screen of poorer quality, although the processor is quite a bit more advanced than the one in the IPRO. If only they used faster innards for the IPRO Sense Gii Plus…

This review

[REVIEW] ASUS ROG G751JT Gaming Laptop Review

Original review at Pokde.net. Like our FB page for the latest reviews and news!

ROG – that’s all I need to say to divert your mind into the gaming side of Asus. Indeed, Asus has given some love to the gamers community by bringing in the Asus ROG G751JT laptop. Ever since Asus brought in the new brand Strix, gamers have been questioning the position of ROG in the Asus game-o-sphere. Basically, ROG holds the premium throne with bells and whistles while Strix is downright straightforward gaming gear. Well, in that case, ROG needs to be what it claims to be, and we are going to be bullish on this machine. Let’s begin!

ROG Aesthetics

I don’t want to lie, but I seriously fell in love with this body shell!
You couldn’t miss out the two main things when you spot this G751JT laptop. First, the anodized brushed aluminium looking interface that holds the ROG emblem. Second, the red fins at the rear through which this monster releases it’s fire breath from. Now, if you noticed, I used the word “looking” in “anodized brushed aluminium looking interface” because that’s what it is – looks. The core of it is actually plastic material coated with the super-impressive interface to give it such a premium look. Asus has really reached a whole new level in polished plastics ever since the inception of their Asus Zenfone mobile devices. If you are thinking that it was supposed to be real solid aluminium, I’d say good luck in adding to the weight of this already heavy beast.

Yeah, it’s ready to provoke your opponent sitting across you! Look at those fins!
The rest of the body including the outer shell and inner body are very nice to hold. They bear something like teflon coating to give it a very soft touch. I love this material, seriously, but my concern here is that at least this material was not supposed to be used on the palm rest area. It’s a gaming laptop and gamers are known to spend countless hours on the machine. This material is definitely going to leave some sweat trails over prolonged use. How do I know this? I had this same issue back then on my Alienware M17xR3.

Imagine gaming to this sight everyday!
Other sightings are a Blu-ray drive, four USB 3.0 ports, card reader, ethernet port, DisplayPort, HDMI port, VGA and audio ports.

ROG Performance
Here comes the best part in the ROG league. Under the hood, we are bearing the powerful 4th generation Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor which is more than enough to remove the bottleneck out of pretty much any game available in the market currently. For the graphics polygon calculation and rendering, we have a Maxwell architecture based nVidia GTX970M with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. This is going to run your Battlefield 4 at ultra settings on Full-HD easily! Moving on, we have dual hard drives, the main being a Sandisk 128GB SSD while the secondary being a HGST 1TB 7200rpm HDD. This is a very good setup as you have an SSD side-by-side with a quick spinning hard drive so you can move your game data to secondary drive and save more space on the SSD. So far so good.

Yes, we are serious about gaming here! WASD keys highlighted in red sides!
Next up, we have 8GB of DDR3 RAM. WHAT?! 8GB?! This is the second time I’m let down by ROG machine in terms of RAM. Bearing the ROG brand, I expected ASUS to throw in 16GB of RAMs, no less! And no, these are not the global specs. Looking around, most of the G751 are bearing 16GB while our Malaysian version is spotting only 8GB! Yes, you can upgrade and no, that is not acceptable.

Other under the hoods are the mobile Intel HM87 Express Chipset, 17.3″ Full-HD Back-Lit LED with 300 nits and ASUS Splendid View technology which is really beautiful to the eyes. The total weight of the laptop itself is slightly above 4KG and adding the 1KG brick power adapter, your friends better not ffk you last minute on a gaming party!

Connectivity
You would find ample connectivity options in this machine really. Ethernet and Bluetooth are just the beginning. However, there was one interesting finding that I made in this machine. Usually, the first thing you would do upon running the laptop is to connect it to the Wi-Fi network. This was where I found out that it was not detecting my 5GHz band but only the 2.4GHz band. Upon further inspection, I found out that Asus has chucked in the Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter that does not carry support for dual-band networks. This got me cracking because even my ASUS UX303 Ultrabook has dual-band capabilities. Again, carrying the ROG brand, I was expecting the laptop to work with dual-band networks but it was a let down.

Power Efficiency
I have had gaming laptops in my life and I used to convince myself into believing that it’s a gaming laptop and it’s not meant to be run on battery on prolonged hours – even if you are just using it for productivity purposes. However, I was pretty amazed this time around. The 8 cells 6000 mAh really delivered its prowess on this machine. I used it on normal load (non-gaming but heavy) and I easily got well over 3 hours of continuous usage. In fact, this whole blog post is being written on the machine and I’m nowhere near even half of the battery so far.

Additional Keys
You see, if there is one thing I believe in life, that is you can never go wrong with red & black. In fact, I have revolved myself around this color in pretty much anything that I do as it just looks elegantly awesome. And that is exactly what you will find in the chiclet keyboard. It uses 19mm full size key pitch and has an integrated numeric keypad with red back light. The WASD keys have been significantly marked too, proudly claiming its gaming profile.

The video recording key, Steam key along with additional customizable keys
What makes it even more interesting is that there are several shortcut keys that are rather very useful. First, there is a recording key for quick video recording while being in-game. This may come very handy when you are about to perform an epic pwnage. Next to it, we have a steam key for quickly launching the steam console. While this is biased against others like origin, sweat not. there are another 3 more keys that you can customize to launch other thin clients of yours.

The ROG key!
Another interesting key we have is the ROG key. This launches the Asus Gaming Center. If you don’t know what that is, it holds shortcuts to several essential tools like nVidai GeForce Experience, ROG Game First 3, Splendid View, RAM usage, storage usage, etc. Checkout the screenshot:

The Gaming Center provides some quick shortcuts and info, mostly gaming related. Love the interface!

Gaming Done Right
I love this machine. I really do. While there are hiccups in the specs, at least those are the ones that can be improved over time. The machine looks and feels sturdy and beautiful right since you take it out from the box until the keyboard fires up the red LEDs. The performance is insanely awesome and gaming is fun on it. If you are a gamer on the move, this is definitely worth carrying than a PS4 in your backpack. I didn’t discuss about weight in this post because if you are going to be gaming on a laptop, you better not be bi**hing about it’s weight. I carried laptops over 4kg all my teenage life just to pwn my enemies.

Although I would like to send a shoutout to ASUS to not play with my feelings when it comes to ROG products. The little things are what makes ROG my favorite emblem and it should not be tampered with.

Free DoTA 2 keys

As @noRightClick gave me my DoTA 2 key last year, which I enjoyed throughly. This year I am giving out 3 DoTA 2 keys if anyone doesn't have one yet and wants one (yes I know many of you have it already, no need to troll me)

No competition, just post whatever you want (one word replies will be rejected). I will select the winners randomly by using the post number and putting it into Randomizer.org to select 3 "chosen ones". The 3 will be PM-ed by yours truly.

Good luck

Got a few questions

1. I just got a Hyper 212+ and applied quite an amount of TX-2... a small square covering two heatpipes about 1mm thick. After overclocking from 3.2 to 3.6 and increasing the voltage by 0.2V, issit normal to have a difference of about 6C only? Or do I need to reseat it?

2. I have an Acbel 500W PSU..it is supposedly 75% efficiency only...but has some pretty good Amperage on the 12V rails so I think it will be allright..but the one thing I worry about is will it increase my bill by much compared to if I use a 80+ bronze PSU?

Hyper 212 Plus vs Hyper TX-3

As I have read in quite a few reviews, they perform quite closely with Hyper 212 Plus beating it by a slight margin. But 212 is harder to install... TX-3 only uses pushpins.

I need this cooler to get my i5 760 to 4.0ghz.. it can do 3.2ghz on stock voltage maxing out at 72C.. Can the TX-3 allow me to reach 4.0ghz while maintaining sub-70 temps on full load? Thanks for the help

The difference in price is not a factor.

BTW recommend some LYN sellers as well as good thermal paste
