If a user's data session ended after the tweet was sent then it would be rounded up under some telco's plans to 1 megabyte, about a thousand kilobytes more than what they actually used.

Most Australian telcos Fairfax Media surveyed that offer pre-paid services participated in the practice, although some to a lesser extent.

Vodafone did so, but from February 13 will cease the practice and will bill data in smaller 1 kilobyte increments.

Lifehacker Australia editor, Angus Kidman, who keeps a close eye on telco plans, said he didn't personally know why telcos rounded up data but suspected they did it to make "a little more money" because most people didn't pay attention to the terms and conditions of their plans.

"Most people don't want to know," Mr Kidman said.

"Also, until very recently, while they charge you this way they haven't had to provide you with detailed information with how they calculate these charges."

Mr Kidman added that it was wrong for telcos "to not make it clear what the consequences" were of what rounding up data meant.

Now that Vodafone has stopped rounding up, there are calls from the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network, the peak body that represents consumers on communications issues, for other telcos to follow suit and charge in 1 kilobyte increments, which means charging only for what data customers use.

"Charging per megabyte is not a fair way of calculating customers' data usage, customers should only pay for what they use," said Elise Davidson, a spokeswoman for the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network.

"If you compare it to something like buying fuel, it would never happen — imagine how annoyed people would be if petrol stations started rounding up to the nearest litre?"

Ms Davidson said the practice of charging in 1 megabyte blocks had flown "under the radar" for a while and was most likely because consumers weren't always aware of the difference between a kilobyte and megabyte of data - and that there were a lot of online activities which could be measured in smaller 1 kilobyte increments.

"We're also in an environment where networks are regularly experiencing network congestion," Ms Davidson said.

"Every time a customer's internet drops out and has to reconnect that starts a new data session, which is another reason that per kilobyte charging would seem the fairest way to calculate data charges."

To understand how telco's charge, one must understand the difference between a kilobyte and a megabyte.

In telco land, a megabyte is generally measured as being 1000 kilobytes (technically it's actually 1024 kilobytes). And although the telcos have the capability to measure data per kilobyte — and do measure it as such on contract plans — most have decided to round up data to the nearest megabyte when a session ends.

A session can start and end a number of times each day and depends on a number of factors, including what smartphone a customer is using, the smartphone's settings, the type of apps they access and how they interact with a telco's network, and whether a customer is in an area for long periods of time where there is no reception.

Amaysim, Woolworths Mobile, Boost Mobile and Kogan Mobile's pre-paid plans all round up data to the nearest megabyte, while Optus rounds up to the nearest megabyte for two of its pre-paid plans and Telstra for one pre-paid plan. Virgin Mobile rounds data up to the nearest 60 kilobytes and Red Bull Mobile to the nearest 250 kilobytes. Vodafone used to round up some of its pre-paid customers to either 25 kilobytes, 50 kilobytes or 1 megabyte but said this would stop from February 13.

Ms Davidson said it was good to see Telstra and Vodafone "leading the way" on data billing by charging in 1 kilobyte increments on most pre-paid plans.

Optus said it was "planning" to offer more pre-paid plans that bill data in 1 kilobyte increments "in the future".

Amaysim spokesman Gerard Mansour said an agreement with its wholesaler, Optus, stipulated charging in 1 megabyte increments.

"Unfortunately, even though we know it's not ideal, this is something we don't see changing in the near future," Mr Mansour said.

Virgin Mobile spokeswoman Melissa Gompes said the telco is "reviewing" how customers are charged for pre-paid data.

Telstra said through a spokesman that the one pre-paid plan it offered which rounded data up was not designed for those that use a lot of data.

Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles...l#ixzz2Y7vSmYoW

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles...0124-2d8al.html

Old news I know, but what's your take on this?

Green Tea from Japan

QUOTE

The Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectural governments have called on the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to withdraw its request for local authorities in northeastern and eastern Japan to check radiation levels in green tea leaves during processing.

After the amount of radioactive cesium exceeding the legal limit was detected in green tea leaves harvested in Ibaraki and Kanagawa prefectures, the health ministry ordered Tokyo and 13 prefectures in northeastern and eastern Japan on May 16 to ban shipments of half-processed steam dried green tea leaves, known as "Aracha," if cesium tops the national permissible limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram.

The cesium concentration in steam dried green tea can become about five times as high as that in raw leaves, prompting the ministry to order the prefectures to check radiation levels in Aracha.

However, the move met with opposition from Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures.

Shizuoka Vice Gov. Yoichiro Iwase visited Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Ritsuo Hosokawa on May 17 and requested, in writing, that the measurement of radiation doses be limited to raw green tea leaves and those ready to be marketed.

Iwase pointed out the fact that consumers do not drink Aracha and that radiation levels in green tea can exceed the legal limit during the production process even if those in raw leaves and final products are below the provisional amount.

On the same day, Kanagawa Gov. Yuji Kuroiwa submitted a petition to the health minister and the agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister, requesting Aracha be excluded from radiation screening.
sos

QUOTE

Human conductor Slavisa Pajkic has scientists scratching their heads because he can withstand high voltages without feeling a thing.

Known as 'Battery Man', the machinist claims he can act as an insulator, conductor and even a heater.

Videos on the internet show the 54-year-old powering up a lightbulb and cooking sausages by using energy stored in his body.

Slavisa, from Pozarevac, Serbia, says he discovered his amazing talent when he was a teenager.

He said: 'I was 17 years old when accidentally during work, I felt that electricity can not do anything. The rain was falling, and my colleagues made a metal fence."

The fence somehow became live, and it was then his new life began.

The Serbian man set his first Guinness World record in 1983, when he allowed a current of 20,000 volts to pass through his body.

His next accolade came in 2003, after he became the quickest man to heat up a cup of water to 97 degrees Celsius, in 1 minute and 37 seconds.

He now hopes to set a third world record by charging on a million-volt power generator and shooting laser from his fingers.

Slavisa added: 'I will try to charge on it and become a wireless laser man.'
sos

Facebook Ads

I'm just curious, anyone got their articles appear on Facebook's right column ads without paying a single cent? I had 2 articles once in awhile appear there. As far as I know I did not submit anything to facebook or anything related to facebook. Just an hour ago I got loads of traffic from one article from UK ip's only.

Anyone got similar experience?

Guys, what's the minimum processor or system requirement to play 1080p mkv movie files encoded in h.264 with high bitrates?

Let's look at two scenario:

1) All work done by the processor, media player classic + Coreavc ( fastest h.264 decoder in town ). Minimum requirement?

2) System with CUDA enabled graphics card, media player classic + Coreavc. Minimum system?

Any input would be nice

Has anyone got banned from Digg before?

I tried to login Digg today and found out my account got banned because of

QUOTE

Your account was removed for violating the Digg Terms of Service (digg.com/tos) that you agreed to.

"By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree not to use the Services:

with the intention of artificially inflating or altering the 'digg count', blog count, comments, or any other Digg service, including by way of creating separate user accounts for the purpose of artificially altering Digg's services; giving or receiving money or other remuneration in exchange for votes; or participating in any other organized effort that in any way artificially alters the results of Digg's services;"

From our FAQ (digg.com/faq):
Q: Is it ok to have more than one account on Digg?
A: Unless you exist in two parallel universes at once, unfortunately no. To protect the integrity of the system, our policy is one person, one account. This is to help prevent users from artificially inflating Digg counters, which is explicitly against our Terms of Use.

Due to the nature and severity of abuse, your account will not be re-instated. This decision is final and irreversible.

Now i'm really confused how DIGG came to that. i don't have another account, i've dugg most probably about 30 interesting posts by other people and most of my posts have less than 20 diggs.

Anyone got banned b4?

I think my PC is infected with a virus

Guys I need some help here. My other PC is infected with a virus I think. That PC got Comodo Internet Security installed. Comodo keep prompting that the file shellsrv.exe tried to modify the registry. I didn't allow it to modify, but it keep coming back.

Couldn't even boot into safe mode. Searched the drive for this file, nothing came up. Maybe in the memory?

Rebooted to Windows normally the 7th time after failing to boot into safe mode. The prompt never came up anymore, searched the drive for the file nothing came up also.

Is the PC safe now? How do I make sure it's gone totally?
