Mandarin speakers

Almost everywhere I go, whenever I talk to a Mandarin speaker in Cantonese (because while I understand a bit of Mandarin, I am usually more in control in Cantonese), they said that I am "lanci", i.e. arrogant. Mind you, they understand Cantonese as well, but they prefer to speak in Mandarin, as to how I preferred to speak in Cantonese.

WTF? Speaking in Cantonese in arrogant? Since when did this bias arrive?

Even in one of NameWee's songs, he said something about "people in KL who speak Cantonese, don't be so lanci".

WHY? Is there a civil war between Mandarin and Cantonese speakers?

'The Malaysian music industry may end'

Source: http://english.astroawani.com/entertainmen...ila-majid-63184

QUOTE

SHEILA: Music is more than just a place for entertainment as it touches the senses, build character and teach people to better understand the human emotions.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians do not pay high respect towards Malaysian musicians and those involved in the industry, said Datuk Sheila Majid.

The legendary singer also expressed her concern that should this continue, it will one day shorten the lifespan of the Malaysian music scene.

In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of her involvement in the the local and international music industry, Sheila shared a rather ‘sad’ story of the current situation faced by the music industry.

“The public needs to know how important it is to extend an artiste’s longevity in the industry. We cannot say we like a certain artist but still download their works for free and request for a free show.

“How can the artiste continue with his or her career? Isn’t that their livelihood?” expressed Sheila when contacted by Astro AWANI.

According to her, the public's continuous hope for artistes to produce great works but in return refuse to pay the price they will cause these artistes to lose their investment returns.

She added, just liking an artiste does not generate income.

“The music in Malaysia do not get the respect it deserves. One day, the music industry in Malaysia will die,” she said.

MORE THAN ENTERTAINMENT

Sheila also urged the people to reflect on this question:

'What are the things people do in their every day life – from when they they wake up and getting ready to start the day. Is it not switching on the radio and television?'

"In many aspects of life, we expect music and its effects. Then imagine life without sound and melodies, everything will be boring," said Sheila.

According to her, music is more than just entertainment as it touches the senses, build character and teach people to better understand the human emotions.

"That's what we lack. In this country, when we talk about entertainment, people only think about slapstick comedy. Music is increasingly ignored and it is even no longer taught at schools.

"We need the support of the government and the public to revive the industry. The entertainment world is not just about slapstick and gossip,” Sheila said.

Sheila admits to feeling jealous with the success experienced by the music industry in neighbouring countries, particularly in Indonesia, and the strong influence of the K-Pop movement which gets the strong support of the Korean government.

"You think the K-Pop is new? It has already been planned a long time. The Korean government spent billions of dollars to upgrade their arts industry, including education on the arts and music among school children.

“They also ask their musicians to take on English courses. Look at their first product which is singer Rain,” said Sheila.

STAYING POWER
When asked to share her her ways of staying relevant in the local music industry, Sheila said it requires patience and determination.

“I have no special recipe for staying this long. You have to love what you’re doing. More than that, the true fans are the motivating factor because they are the ones who will support your work,” said Sheila.

According to her, in times when there is a local of sponsors to support local talents, musicians like herself are only armed with a strong determination and passion in the field.

“That’s what makes an artiste to continue in the industry. They continue to exist because of their interest, commitment and discipline.

“This is definitely not a glamorous life. If you’re hoping for that, you will be disappointed,” Sheila said.

Board Game Culture Promotion Log #3

In addition to my previous created topic (https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822834&hl=), I am attempting to promote the culture of board games as regularly as possible (possibly once per day, depending if I can find the time to do so) with the titles "Board Game Culture Promotion Log #1, #2, #3, and so on".

Introduction of the board game culture: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822906&hl=

Recent article of KOTAKON (board game convention in Malaysia): https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3826674&hl=

Prologue: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822834&hl=

Previous Log #1 here: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3823441 (featured game: The Resistance)
Previous Log#2 here: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3824649&hl= (featured game: Settlers of Catan)

If you are interested to know more, I can answer any questions to the best of my ability, or you can ask further questions about where to get these board games and anything in regards to them at these following facebook pages (there could be more, but these are the ones I know, so please tell me if you know other links with similar interests as well!):

https://www.facebook.com/allaboardcgc/?fref=ts
https://www.facebook.com/boardgamecafe.net
https://www.facebook.com/meeplescafe/?fref=ts
https://www.facebook.com/groups/boardgamestogoMY/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/malaysia.board.gamers/
https://www.facebook.com/BGDepot
https://www.facebook.com/TheBorderCity

And without further ado, let's begin with the promotion of a zombie themed game for at least 2 number of players!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/150376/...crossroads-game

QUOTE

Game description from the publisher:

"Crossroads" is a new series from Plaid Hat Games that tests a group of survivors' ability to work together and stay alive while facing crises and challenges from both outside and inside.

Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game, the first game in this series, puts 2-5 players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game.

Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition — but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests!

Dead of Winter is an experience that can be accomplished only through the medium of tabletop games. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies, and keep the colony's morale up.

Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

Turn on the CC for the video below for subtitles for easy listening!

Holiday board game celebration in full force

I hope you had a good one; I know I sure did. The holiday season is a time (generally) spent with close friends and family. Food is shared, we laugh about the craziest things we did for the past 365 days, and we play a lot of tabletop games. You see, not everyone is into playing video games, which is totally fine, but almost all of my relatives won’t mind trying out something that doesn’t need a controller. The whole of December, my office mates were engaged in after-work dueling in Monopoly Deal. I got to play Cards Against Humanity through the year-end countdown which I got for Christmas, and there were lots of Magic: The Gathering drafts in between. Tabletop games are some of the best gifts for people of all ages, and I was looking to add to my collection. Last week, I caught wind of a mini board game convention happening nearby and, partially inspired by my editors, figured it would be a great place to pick something up. What I got to experience was something bigger.

Kotakcon 2015 (“Kotak” meaning “box” in Malay) is a free mini convention for tabletop gamers, and it’s held on Boxing Day (get it?!?!) at the All Aboard Community Gaming Center in Selangor, Malaysia. Participants can drop by to play board games, buy pre-loved games from other exhibitors at a discount, playtest some prototypes by local game designers, or just simply meet and greet other enthusiasts. Since it’s a small convention at a small location, all the exhibitors can set up free of charge on a first come, first serve basis.

When I say mini, I am not exaggerating. While the event in small in size, it makes up for it in heart. With a better than anticipated turn out, everyone was having a blast gaming pretty much non-stop. There are tons of board games for browsing scattered around the various rooms, and most of them are 20- 30% off while being only slightly used. On the other side, a custom homebrew D&D session was held in conjunction with the event. Hosted by Gray from D&D Malaysian Adventurers League, the campaign, aptly name Saving Midwinter’s Klaus, roped in the regulars for some RPG in the spirit of the holidays. Food and beverages are the common companions of board game sessions, and they were sold there as well. The coolest part of the event, I have to admit, was being able to play some board games designed by local designers.

Right at the table by the entrance was Smal Tok by Nicholas Pang from Singapore, an ice breaking card game designed to encourage deep and meaningful conversations between players, be it family, friends, or strangers. Think of it as the inverse of Cards Against Humanity. There was also Blue Mana Games, which showcased Monster Hero Academy, where you competitively train student monsters into the best hero in the school. There were also a bunch of card games previewed like Pasaraya: Supermarket Manager by Box Fox Games a deckbuilding game where you have to manage a supermarket and beat the competition. Centaur Games was also present, the publisher of a local and contravesial favorite Politiko: A Card Game of Malaysian Politics (which I ended up buying). They came to playtest a new prototype called Pick Pocket. Lastly, I really enjoyed another word-based card game by Mohd Firdaus called Spell Breaker.

Overall it’s a small step but an impactful one for the local board game community. It’s easy to forget sometimes, but physical games still serve as the foundation for video games, and lest we forget to stop and appreciate them. Playing board games is still something not very common for Malaysians and consistent events like these will definitely make them more accessible and appealing to newer players and a more mainstream audience. Young, old, new, and returning gamers were all present at the event, and it was even covered by Aaron from The Action Points Podcast out of Melbourne, Australia. At the end of the day, for a gaming community to grow, you not only need more developers to experiment with different mediums but also more players to enjoy a variety of games, and events like this can do nothing but help move us in that direction.

Board Game Culture Promotion Log #2

In addition to my previous created topic (https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822834&hl=), I am attempting to promote the culture of board games as regularly as possible (possibly once per day, depending if I can find the time to do so) with the titles "Board Game Culture Promotion Log #1, #2, #3, and so on".

Introduction of the board game culture: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822906&hl=

Prologue: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3822834&hl=

Previous Log #1 here: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3823441 (featured game: The Resistance)

And without further ado, let's begin with the promotion of a game which I think is absolutely fun with at least 3 number of players, and it has been the great way to introduce people who are new to board games!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/catan

(# of Players: 3 − 4)

QUOTE

In Catan (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players collect these resources (cards)—wood, grain, brick, sheep, or stone—to build up their civilizations to get to 10 victory points and win the game.

Setup includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each showing a resource or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange. Number disks, which will correspond to die rolls (two 6-sided dice are used), are placed on each resource tile. Each player is given two settlements (think: houses) and roads (sticks) which are, in turn, placed on intersections and borders of the resource tiles. Players collect a hand of resource cards based on which hex tiles their last-placed house is adjacent to. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.

A turn consists of possibly playing a development card, rolling the dice, everyone (perhaps) collecting resource cards based on the roll and position of houses (or upgraded cities—think: hotels) unless a 7 is rolled, turning in resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, and trading resource cards with other players. If a 7 is rolled, the active player moves the robber to a new hex tile and steals resource cards from other players who have built structures adjacent to that tile.

Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road and the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points. When a player has gathered 10 points (some of which may be held in secret), he announces his total and claims the win.

Catan has won multiple awards and is one of the most popular games in recent history due to its amazing ability to appeal to experienced gamers as well as those new to the hobby.

Turn on the CC for the video below for subtitles for easy listening!
