A society of ridicule or enlightenment?

While I am certain none of us ever had a ‘scissor’ salad, it was undoubtedly not one of the best moments for the Parliament’s caterer. And honestly, we should not take it too hard considering our civil service is no longer populated by the stiff-upper-lip British-educated generation.

That generation is gone and most probably got promoted away from the frontline service desk to perhaps the upper echelons of the public service hierarchy.

More importantly, however, we need to talk about a society so quick to ridicule others while they themselves might not be in the right. Case in point, there was nothing wrong with the highway LED board greeting for US President Barack Obama.

Yet, plenty decided it was worthy of an article. It does not reflect so much on the highway authority, but reflects back on the writer of the said article, the daft supporters and their capabilities in the language.

Heck, even the British Council took to explaining there was nothing wrong with it and still Malaysians were too stubborn to admit jumping the gun.

But more importantly, it reflects on all of us as a society. While many have gone towards individuality instead of collective mindsets these days, I think a lot of Malaysians forget that whatever this government does is a reflection of all of us.

Which is why when people complain about the government, the first point to understand is that we have a population in the rural areas that still believe in them enough to keep them in power.

And when we ridicule such things or even those people in parliament who are supposed to represent us, most of the time we end up ridiculing ourselves.

Yes, we have a problem with our level of English and we have seen it time and again in multiple scenarios from a menu in parliament, to even a toilet signboard asking people to ‘flash’ after use.

Since it takes society to embrace a language, shouldn’t we point out such mistakes to those in charge with hope that they improve, or do we take a picture and go wild on social media to ridicule people?

That choice is always in our own hands. Which is why it was a pity that a mistake in a menu was used by our own parliamentarians as an opportunity to ridicule instead of an opportunity to help someone better themselves in a language that we knew they did not master.

And Malaysian society, unfortunately, thrives on ridicule rather than seeking to enlighten and educate.

Trust me, I am equally guilty of this too, especially if you have read what I write in Bahasa Melayu in my other columns.

But at the same time, the ridicule of calling people ‘bangang’ comes with many, many things that I believe they should have read up about before commenting. And most times when it comes to English in Malaysia, it should apply to both sides.

It is easy to become a society that believes in ridicule in Malaysia, especially when you read the comments on how many Malaysians thought there was a human photographer in the probe that took a photo of Pluto a while back.

And there will always be people who believe all the stories published in Mastika as the gospel truth. But this is the challenge we face not as individuals, but as a society.

Malaysian society needs to evolve from ridicule to intellectual discourse, from reading gossip to reading scientific and educational publications, from taking a picture to make fun of on social media to actually calling a waiter and telling them the words on the menu are wrong.

It is shameful to me, personally, that we had an entire Dewan Rakyat dinner and the only thing our parliamentarians made sure to do was to ridicule a caterer instead of using it as a teaching experience. But then again, this is politics.

And Malaysians love politicians too much to admit that sometimes politicians should stop ridiculing one another and get to work. At the same time, politicians forget that we know what they say are sometimes stupid to the point that we vent online or in my case, start bashing a keyboard.

Because in the end, it is our job to help our population become better, no one else, even if it is simply telling them to throw trash in a bin or helping a cinema cashier properly pronounce Les Miserables when she sells tickets.

We do have a choice as a population of 30 million. Do we ridicule or teach and enlighten? Do we snap a picture and have a laugh, or call someone to change the signs or the menu to change people for the better?

Woman Wrecks Brand New Audi Q3 Gifted To Her Because It’s Too Small

Not quite, at least for this woman seen in a video recently uploaded onto YouTube. Before we jump into things, here’s a little background info.

See, the woman seen here has a boyfriend who gifted her a brand new Audi Q3 crossover SUV, which in China, is priced at 420,000 yuan or RM292,798 if we follow our current exchange rate.

In the video, she is seen ranting about the size of the vehicle given to her after having gotten into an argument with her boyfriend about the same exact issue. Instead of settling the issue through other means (exchanging for the larger Q5 or Q7 for instance), the Audi Q3 becomes a helpless victim of her rage as she is seen repeatedly smashing the brick against the SUV’s body.

Sources say the incident happened at a local car park and surprised bystanders could do nothing to stop the woman who continuously attacked the car. By the time the police were called in to handle the situation, the Audi had already suffered substantial damage with broken windows, sides, door handles, and side mirrors removed. The damages are estimated to cost approximately 50,000 yuan (RM34,701).

this few days my internet goes on and of. it's certainly not my modem problem. since others are working right. after a while of using, the light for the internet on the modem goes off. i have to always switch on and off for the modem in order to connect to the internet.
