how to install a modem and ntldr

I have a couple of questions. Any help appreciated.

I had a Riger modem with Streamyx but it broke. It would work for about a minute then go off and I would have to restart everything just to get another minutes net connection. I bought a new modem from a lot in Low Yat (TNS modem) but i can't get it working with Streamyx.
The ADSL light, USB light, Power light, LAN light are all on. I followed the cd instructions to install driver. I tried to click on the Streamyx connect icon on desktop, but nothing happens - no connection. Any idea how I can get this modem working?

Second question. When my modem broke I phoned Streamyx and they said the problem might be the PC (I now realize it was the modem). So I just started deleting files that looked not important. The next time I tried to switch on the pc I got the message 'NTLR is missing - Use ctrl - Alt - Del to restart. Now I cannot open this pc at all. I am running XP. I have loads of stuff on the hard drive. Will I lose it or is it possible for it to be salvaged?

I bought a second hand desktop yesterday from somewhere on the fourth floor but I still can't get the modem working on this one, yet the old modem works for a minute before breaking down. How to set up this modem?

Thanks

internet keeps stopping

Hi

Any advice on this little issue would be most welcome.

I recently had to change hard drives in my pc and have reinstalled everything etc, but sometimes the internet just freezes.

It stops at exactly 4 minutes 50 seconds and in the connection status box, it shows that 'activity received' is stopped, but 'activity sent' is still moving. The data light on the Riger modem comes on to yellow when this happens. When there is no problem it stays off.

I have to switch the modem off, switch it back on and then sign in again. I do this quite a few times till it just keeps running. Occasionally it keeps running without stopping from when I first switch it on. I have spybot search and destroy with antivirus, but my pc always comes up clean.

Any help would be great. Thanks.
