RIM let us know that the official rollout of BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 starts at 12:01AM EST. Sorry we jumped the gun a few hours ago but now you understand why. You can start checking App World now for the update but due to their 24 hour cache period that may take a bit. As you have already seen RIM has started approving apps in App World that make use of the Social Platform available in BBM 6 so they are available when BBM6 launches now.

In an interview with Mike Kirkup, Director of Developer Relations @ RIM, he told us that BBM now has 45 million users and is seeing tremendous growth. They process over a billion BBM messages a day and the number is only growing. This ability to use BBM inside 3rd party apps is going to be explosive but more on that soon. RIM’s goal is to let developer harness BBM’s instant feature. Mike told me his colleague described it as both Instant AND Intimate. In other words sub 3 second messages along with a intimate private chat setting. Now developers are going to be able to tap into that powerful BBM social graph.

The future of Research In Motion hangs in the balance. It is the early summer of 1997, and Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie stand in a BellSouth conference room. They've spent the last few years trying to convince the world that mobile email is the future. They're almost there. RIM has already produced one device, the Inter@ctive Pager 900; and is developing a second - sometimes called the Leapfrog.

But BellSouth - the one and only customer for RIM's soon-to-be Leapfrog - isn't happy. They've spent $300 million to buy and build the Mobitex wireless network. But without products to make use of that network, BellSouth finds itself with an unprofitable enterprise. If BellSouth goes through with plans to sell the network, RIM loses its Leapfrog network and the only customer for the device.

RIM Co-CEO's Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have but one chance to change the minds of the high-level executives in that room. The executives "walked in there thinking they were going to pull the plug," says Jim Hobbs, VP Operations, BellSouth Mobile Data. As Lazaridis begins the presentation that will decide the future of his fledgling company, he comes to a horrid realization. He and Balsillie had been so nervous about the meeting that they had left the models of the Leapfrog in their taxi. It was a make-it or break-it presentation, and the most important parts were lost.......

Comparison: EDGE vs 3G vs WiFi on BIS

Saw great article comparing the speed on 3 types of connection on BIS: Wifi, EDGE and 3G. I copied and paste the conclusion here. There rest can be read on the link

Results Breakdown

Wifi:
* Best speed results in both low latency and high bandwidth scenarios
* Additional Battery drain
* Works while you are on a call

2.75G (EDGE):
* Best carrier-connection scores for messages, and IM.
* does not work while you are on a call, messages and IMs poll after your call is over.
* Draws slightly less power than 3G.

3G:
* Best score for rich media, transfers.
* Works while you’re on a call.
* Marginally slower than 2G for small amounts of data.

Conclusions

High bandwidth is great for transferring large files and streaming music and video. Low latency is great for messaging and other applications that need to access smaller chunks of information, but is only 15% faster on a very small time frame (an average of a half-second faster).

Where is Connectify? I installed it, but I don’t see it.
Connectify is running in the Notification Tray next to the system clock. It might not be visisble, because Windows 7 has cleaned up the Notification Tray to hide the icons that you don’t frequently use. If you click on the small white triangle it will show all of the icons, including the Connectify radio wave icon (circled in this picture).
To ensure that Connectify stays visible, select “Customize”. Find Connectify in the list of programs and select “Show icons and notifications”.

Now what? How do I share my connection?
To get started, click on the Connectify logo in the Notification Tray.
1. Select the Internet connection you wish to share
2. Choose a name for your new wireless network
3. Choose a wireless passphrase
4. Press the Internet Sharing button to turn on your wireless network
5. Now, from your other devices, you can see your wireless network. Choose to join it, and enter the wireless passphrase to connect.

What versions of Windows does Connectify run on?
Connectify runs on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 r2, both in either 32 or 64 bits.

Does it run on Windows Vista or Windows XP?
Sorry, not at this time. Connectify depends on improvements made in Windows 7 to operate. Frankly, Windows 7 is such a big improvement, that we suggest you’re better off upgrading than waiting for us to get all this working on an older version of Windows.

Do my friends need Windows 7 in order to connect to my Connectify hotspot?
Absolutely not, any WiFi enabled device can connect to your network without any additional configuration or software.

Can I still join a WiFi network while my computer is acting as a WiFi Hotspot?
Yes, absolutely. You can join a WiFi network and run the Connectify Hotspot on the same WiFi card, at the same time. The Connectify Hotspot is always on the same channel as the WiFi network that you join, but WiFi networks can share the same channel.

Will it work with my cellular Wireless Internet service?
It should, we have tested successfully with several. Please tell us if it doesn’t.

Is this just WiFi’s ad hoc mode?
No, Connectify is a real WiFi Access Point running on your computer. Any device that can connect to a regular access point, can connect to a Connectify Hotspot, with no special setup or software required.

What kind of security does it have? Is it encrypted?
Yes, your wireless hotspot is encrypted with WPA2-Personal (AES) encryption. Your security is as strong as the Passphrase that you select.

How do I turn off encryption?
Encryption is required with Connectify, we take your safety and security seriously.

Am I allowed to share my Internet?
This depends on the terms of service of your Internet Service Provider. Many have terms against reselling the connections, however sharing with friends, family and your other computers is generally fine.

RIM doesn't often offer "service packs" for Desktop Manager (they usually just release updated versions) so we're not sure what this one entails. The software is listed as Service Pack 1 (5.0.1). Just some minor bug fixes and not a whole lot of upgrades in this release.
