[REPORT] 34 Macs are stolen

The origin reported case from chinese forum, a victims company wish public could keep an eye for bulk sales of used Mac computers (Mac Pro, iMac & etc) on internet as well as in real life, in hoping to retrieve back the devices, and most importantly for them is the source code.

21/09/12 A game developer company in Setia Walk Puchong has been break in at around 9pm - 12pm and all of their Mac devices are gone.

According to victim, the alarm has been triggered when the thieves attempt to broke the door. Alarm is being armed for an hour an while the thieves are hiding at back staircase for awhile. What sad is none of the security guard patrol the building and response to the triggered alarm

34 Mac devices (Mac Pro, iMacs), which worth around 7K - 13K per unit are gone, victim's lost on hardware alone over 400k.The victim company are developing a mobile game named "Ninja One Shot" and some other games, source code of it in the computer are lost along the incident. Total lost of the victim are over millions ringgit.

Here are some cctv footage of the incident.

Further list and information for devices will be post upon agrees by the victim, as this might get involved with insurance policy. And I have been told that the official police report will be upload soon if it is needed.

Hope forumer here can help keep an eyes on sales of the Mac devices on internet and anywhere else. As the devices and source code are really important for the victim and the development involved with contract with some overseas company.

I've registered a domain and wanted to upload contents to my website by using Filezilla to my ftp.

After couple of tries with some files, I realize it is not the thing I capable and it was bad idea to mess with it myself.

At beginning I can excess my website and saw the default content provide by the server, those like this webpage is under construction & etc.

Unfortunately I've deleted the default content under wwwroot folder and now I get 403 forbidden access is denied from browser, what make it worse is I did not backup anything from the wwwroot folder.

By any chance I can get it restore or upload others content to it? Other than wait till Monday contact my service provider.
Now I still can access to my ftp.

Hi all,

I would like to share my little knowledge of laser printer' problem & general maintenance, perhaps be able to help whoever encountering laser printer's problem.

Before proceed to troubleshooting tips, let me make a simple introduction of how's laser printer work first.

The Laser Printer Working Concept
The primary principle at work in a laser printer is static electricity. Static electricity is simply an electrical charge built up on an insulated object. Since oppositely charged atoms are attracted to each other, objects with opposite static electricity fields cling together.

A laser printer uses this phenomenon as a sort of "temporary glue." The core component of this system is the photoreceptor, typically a revolving drum or cylinder. This drum assembly is made out of highly photoconductive material that is discharged by light photons.

In simple words, scanner act as a drawing hand, imaging drum act as paper, the image drew on drum. Through the static charge, toner powder will then transfer on the drum, when a media contained opposition charge bypassing, the toner powder then transfer on the media and through final procedure - melted by high temperature heating assembly permanently on the media.

Basically this is how a print cycle be done.

computer send print command > printer received and decode > gear assembly working > paper pull from tray > laser beam transmitting on drum > paper by pass drum > heating process > done
Herewith a diagram of printing process

NOTE
Laser Printer parts are not designed to last forever, some are wear & tear and required to be replace regularly at certain usage.

Listed here with few major components in a laser printer
Feed roller, motor & gear assembly, main board, formatter board, scanning unit, fuser assembly

I write down herewith few common problems of laser printer and a simple guideline to determine/ solve the problem you may encounter if possible.

1) Paper jammed
2) Print out bad/ dirty/ unexpected lines/ dot and etc
3) Over feed
4) Clicking noise
5) Will not print
6) Slow response

Paper Jammed
There is numbers of possibilities to caused paper jammed of laser printer, some problem can be locate/ determine easily by most users, however some are very difficult
First, you must at least know where the paper jammed at

i) Paper jammed message but couldn't find any paper jammed in printer
Possibility
- Delayed jammed, may caused by bad feed roller/ lifter motor/ gear assembly, usually a printer has itself timing for each print job, if the paper did not feed into a printer, it will assume as paper jammed.
Solution
Check feed roller & pad, replace if it's worn out or lost grip

- Sensor flag faulty
In entire paper path, there is few sensor flag to detect when paper passing
Solution
Check if sensor flag in right place, can be swing or broken, replace it if it's broken.

ii) Jammed at toner cartridge
Possibility
- Bad cartridge drum's gear, not rotate perfectly causing paper unable to pass through
Solution
Replace a new toner cartridge

- Gear assembly faulty
Most time when it's faulty, it will make clicking noise, however sometimes it wont.
Solution
Check if all gear in perfect condition, or with enough lubricant on it, replace or apply grease if necessary.

- Transfer roller faulty
It sat under toner cartridge, usually it fixed by screw at both side tightly, the plastic case sometimes can be break an causing the transfer roller unable to rotate perfectly.
Solution
Take out toner cartridge, try spin the transfer roller gently see if it rotating nicely or comes up from the case easily, refix it or replace the entire assembly

iii) Jammed at fuser assembly
Possibility
Damage fuser film/ pressure roller
Solution
Open back door/ remove the fuser assembly, check if any damage on fuser film/ pressure roller, replace if necessary

Caution
Fuser assembly produce high temperature and it can be very hot whenever the printer's is on (for some instant on fuser technology's model), turn off and unplug power cable, wait at least 30 minutes for it to cool down before remove it from printer.

Print out bad/ dirty/ unexpected lines/ dot/ image faded/ image can be wipe off.
There is also few possibilities would caused this problem.

i) Bad quality toner cartridge/ drum
Solution
Take out toner cartridge, open the drum cap, with holding the gear of drum at the edge, spin it slowly and check if the drum surface is scratch or any damage, replace new toner cartridge is necessary.

ii) Check the scanner mirror see if it contained any dust
Solution
It usually located on top of the toner cartridge, can be reach by hand. Remove the toner cartridge, use a soft clothe to wipe the scanner lens without removing any casing/ parts.

Note
The internal lens and scanning unit may be dirty by dust as well, this required more technical skill to remove and clean the internal lens with not breaking any lens in it, not recommended for end user DIY in this.

iii) Damage fuser film
A fuser film often found damage by paper clip, stapler bullet, additional toner powder/ dust. Stained/ dust melted by fuser will stick on it, while paper bypassing the heating process, toner on media/ stained on the film would caused a bad print out like dot or lines, or a bad condition pressure roller given not enough pressure on the paper also would cause print out bad.
Solution
Check fuser assembly if any damaged on it, replace fuser film/ pressure roller if necessary.

iv) Bad heating element
Defected heating element not hot enough and unable to melt toner powder completely on media, therefore the printed image can be wipe off
Solution
Replace new heating element/ clean the heating element if necessary.

Tips
In order to determine print out bad problem source, can always try to perform a half print cycle after you confirmed that the toner cartridge has no problem.
Do test print and estimate when 3/4 of the paper feeded under toner cartridge section, instantly open the print casing to force it stop the print job, from here you can pull out the paper carefully and take out the toner cartridge, see if the image on media/ drum are good.
However, must be very sure of the paper haven't been feed to fuser assembly otherwise it would be hard to remove.

Overfeed
Overfeed than a sheet of paper in each print cycle can causing jammed, damage to printer as some internal parts are very tiny and weak, for example the sensor flag. Most time overfeed happened due to bad feed roller & pad.

Solution
Check if feed roller & pad are clean on the surface, with good grip ability, replace if necessary.
Sometimes the feed roller in good condition can be malfunction due to the dust on surface. Can try remove it from printer, dunk & wash it with soup water, fix it after dry up see if could perform better. Or use pen knife to draw a cross thread on the pad can extend it's life span a little longer than replace a new unit.

Clicking noise
Above mentioned before, clicking noise could caused by bad gear assembly or any rolling path of printer,
It require a lot skill to locate the source of noise therefore I not recommended end user DIY in this.

Will not print/ Slow response
The printer can be turn on, and you can confirmed there is no problem with the driver/ cable/ software issue and etc. Then could be the formatter board defected, which work as decoder to receive and decode print command from computer. Sometimes this happen due to formatter board cable or ram.
I also not recommend end user try to fix this themselves as it require some skill to remove the board from printer.

Almost all laser built with display panel, control button/ signal light.
We can always determine the printer error from the display message & signal light.
For example 50.XX service or signal light blinking and etc, with reference of service manual we can always get idea of the problem source.

However there is too many brand/ model of laser printer, I unable to specify it all here with you guys. Therefore if you guys encounter any printer problem, can always post up to my thread then I'll try to assist you in locate the problem and perhaps provide you a solution.

Please listed your laser printer model, error message or signal light condition, description/ symptom of the error should you encounter any printer problem, then I or maybe other lyn members could help you better.

P/S So far I only have a complete service manual for HP LaserJet printers, for others like canon, samsung and etc I might not be able to help accurately, however all laser printer working concept are almost the same, therefore feel free to post up your problem

Win XP folder creation & delete inquiry

Dear All,

Ages ago I had created some folder name content with dot (.) for security purpose, for example (folder.) caused it can't open with double click, and it cant be delete with using "del" key.
it will show the message, "refers to a locations that is unavailable" and "cannot delete : cannot read from the source file or disk"

Too bad now I've forgot the command of create, access and remove this type of folder (I sounds very stupid indeed)
If there is any one of you know how to get rid of this type of folder, please do share with me.
