Shifting from Street Fighter II battles to

SINGAPORE: When his parents announced his family's move to Singapore from Indonesia in 2012, Mr Denzel Kuosastra was apprehensive.

That was until Mr Kuosastra, then a teenager, found out that some arcade machines in Singapore came with technology that the ones in his home city of Jakarta didn’t have yet.

“When I heard about this, it just shifted the switch in my brain and suddenly it went from reluctance to 'I really want to go there and see for myself',” he said.

That’s how big a deal arcades were to him. They still are.

Now 23 years old and waiting to start a Masters degree in management, Mr Kuosastra still visits his "playground" once a week.

While he has tried all kinds of arcade games over the years, he finds himself drawn most to rhythm games, some of which require players to move their fingers so fast that they look like they are flying. Others are like workouts, requiring people to perform various moves set to choreographed songs.
...
The arcades and games of today are generally a far cry from how they were in the past. Then, youths would gather in darkened halls to crowd around games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. Competition would be intense as players fought in virtual worlds to showcase their mastery of complex moves.

When he went to the arcade to play Street Fighter II as a teenager in the 1990s, he would start off playing against the computer, said Mr Poh Keng Jin.

The 43-year-old, who now runs workshops on how to build retro arcade machines under the name RetroCade SG, said that he would always end up challenging other arcade goers.

“There’ll be people who just drop in and want to challenge you. The winner gets to stay. The fun of the game is really playing against other players,” said Mr Poh, who is also an adjunct lecturer who teaches game design among other specialties.
...
APPEAL OF THE PRIZES

It is the prizes that are on offer in arcade games which are a key draw for many players in an era where mobile and PC games are so prevalent, said Mr James Walton, travel, hospitality and services sector leader at Deloitte Singapore.

"Those are really the things that set arcades apart, the idea that you can play a game and at the end of it win a stuffed toy," he said. This is not something that is possible in other kinds of gaming, he added.

And the arcades know this.

“A lot of our focus has been not just the games but also the prizes they get to take home with them,” said Nesh Selva, the general manager of Timezone, the arcade chain with 14 branches across Singapore.
...
SOCIAL ELEMENT OF ARCADES

Beyond the prizes, the social element is another key attraction for arcades, experts and industry players said, with other types of gaming having limited opportunities for interaction.

"There is still something to be said for that moment where you are with your friend and you are… playing some game that allows you to get into the moment with your friends," Mr Walton said.

IN FOCUS: Shifting from Street Fighter II battles to winning tickets for toys – how arcades have upped their game to stay relevant

The last time Malaysia won the Thomas Cup was in 1992 (people complained RTM did not broadcast the finals live).

Then Malaysia played in the finals four times, 1994, 2002, 2014 and played in the semifinals four times 2006, 2008, 2010, 2016. Last night Indonesia won the Thomas Cup, so when will Malaysia win the Thomas Cup?

Malaysia pins hopes on badminton star Lee Zii Jia

When Malaysian shuttler Lee Zii Jia won the All England Open men’s singles badminton
title in March this year, he boosted the hopes of a nation weary from Covid-19 pandemic gloom.

The 23-year-old was immediately dubbed a successor to legendary shuttler Lee Chong Wei, who set the world record for being the top player in the Badminton World Federation for 349 consecutive weeks and had won three silver Olympic medals by the time he retired in 2019.

But there are even bigger expectations for Zii Jia – bringing home Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal. Eight of the country’s 11 Olympic medals are for badminton.

Malaysia pins hopes on badminton star Lee Zii Jia to win its first Olympic gold medal

The Mens' Singles badminton gold medal was won by Chen Long (諶龍) in 2016.
Herd immunity is no longer considered right?

Last year, COVID-19 fatality rate was at 1%. Because of this, a lot of people seem to be okay with the herd immunity solution, get everyone infected, then they have immunity and the pandemic will end. People talk about it as just the flu but don't consider that just because there are no deaths it does not mean that there is no danger.

Well now the Delta variant seems to be more contagious and deadlier than before, so the fatality rate should be much higher now. You read about all those news relating to the black fungus and long COVID and herd immunity through infection is an absolutely dumb idea now.

Last year, I also read that the plan is for vaccination to end the pandemic by providing this blocking mechanism that prevents the virus from spreading. Today none of the vaccines have this blocking effect, the virus still can spread only that the vaccine offers protection against the severe symptoms. And we might all need to get yearly shots in order to protect ourselves from COVID-19.

PETALING JAYA, May 3 — If you think you need to scream and shout to get the public to notice your brand, Malaysian company Yusuf Taiyoob knows all too well that all it takes is a whisper.

Let’s face it, the year wouldn’t be complete without tuning in to the radio and hearing the repeated breathy whispers that go “Yusuf Taiyoob”.

In fact, the ad has become a symbol of Ramadan and Hari Raya to Malaysians over the years, signalling “it’s that time of the year” without having to glance at a calendar.

Penangite Datuk Seri Yusuf Taiyoob is the man behind his eponymous foodstuff empire and the brains behind the trademark whisper.

In a 2019 interview with The Edge, the 62-year-old said he came up with the idea more than 15 years ago to promote the company’s line of dates during the fasting month.

The Malaysian “King of Dates” told the financial daily that most advertisements sounded the same and he didn’t want another jingle — he wanted something “different and catchy”.

Yusuf Taiyoob: How the trademark ‘whisper’ became a symbol of Ramadan and Hari Raya to Malaysians

What to Say if Someone Wrongly Claims ‘99%

But the most insidious excuse for unsafe pandemic behavior drops the pretense of caring about COVID-19 spread entirely. Instead, it relies on COVID-19’s supposedly low mortality rate: “99 percent of people who get COVID don’t die. Why should I wear a mask at AutoZone/cancel my winter getaway to Tulum/reschedule my bachelorette party for an illness everyone survives?”

It’s tempting to think this way. It’s comforting to imagine that COVID-19 is a slightly puffed-up version of the common cold that nearly everyone is able to shrug off unless there’s something like, really wrong with them. That “99 percent” is also an easy stat to remember, which makes it fun to parrot—especially in the comments section of an Instagram post or Facebook album when there’s some good old-fashioned public shaming going on.

When someone brings COVID’s “low” mortality rate into the conversation, however, they’re missing a few major pieces of the puzzle, deliberately or not. The biggest one? The “99 percent” stat just isn’t true—according to an Associated Press fact-check, scientists are still trying to determine COVID’s “infection fatality rate,” and the 99 percent stat stems largely from May 2020 analysis that has yet to be peer-reviewed or even published. Instead, it’s been twisted by people whose interests lie in pretending COVID-19 doesn’t exist. It also doesn’t gel with what we’ve already experienced in the U.S.: We’ve had an estimated 25,300,000 COVID cases as of this writing, with 421,000 deaths attributed to the virus—more than 1.5 times the supposed 1 percent mortality rate.

Ask them to share their sources

Try this piece from Reuters, which breaks down the argument that a high survival rate for COVID negates the need for vaccination, or this one from USA Today, which unpacks the origins of the “99 percent survival rate” statistic and delineates the ways that survival rate varies across demographics like age and health history, and is compounded by factors like community spread. Give the person you’re talking to time and space to do their own research along these lines, and hopefully they’ll arrive closer to the truth.

Question whether death rates equal danger

Mortality is not the only problem that matters. COVID can last a long-ass time, so a few days of fun now could lead to weeks and months of debilitating sickness down the road. As if the physical hardship isn’t enough, there are also the financial consequences, like bills for COVID-related medical care (because, yeah, people are still getting hit with those, despite hand-waving about coverage from the federal government). Then there are the potential costs of being unable to work for a long period of time, because sick leave varies widely from employer to employer. Unpaid sick time with no other incoming funds could lead to people missing out on rent payments or other bills like student loan payments, credit card expenses, or preexisting medical debt.

Remind them how many deaths “one percent” of any population would actually be

In an opinion piece for Forbes, meteorologist Marshall Shepherd compared the dismissal of COVID’s danger over a “high” survival rate to the way cities prepare for hurricane season:

QUOTE

Imagine if the National Hurricane Center issued this warning: “Hurricane SoandSo will make landfall in the Miami area tomorrow, there is a 99 percent survival rate so don’t take any precautions and we are sorry in advance for the 1 percent that we will likely lose.” There are over 6 million people in Miami. 1 percent of 6 million people is 60,000 lives. That would be ridiculous.

What to Say if Someone Wrongly Claims ‘99% of People Survive COVID’

Sweden crisis worsens after its anti-lockdown stan

At this time of year the sun only rises above the horizon for about six hours a day in the Swedish capital, but during December it was especially gloomy.

On one day, the sun rose at 8.33am and set again just after 2pm, according to AFP. During that day, it was covered by thick clouds.

The atmosphere outdoors is a mirror to the bleak situation the country is facing during a spike in cases it hoped to avoid by taking its own unique course through the COVID-19 pandemic – a course we now know was doomed to fail from the beginning.

In mid-December, it was revealed that Sweden had not only failed to defeat the virus through its herd-immunity strategy – a strategy that divided leaders around the world – but that its healthcare system was being crippled by a surge in patient numbers.

According to Bloomberg, Sweden is currently facing a shortage of healthcare workers and being forced to consider outside help from its neighbours in Finland.

Sineva Ribeiro, the chairwoman of the Swedish Association of Health Professionals, said the situation is “terrible”.

And Stockholm County Mayor Irene Svenonius called it “extremely tense”.

“There’s fatigue. You can’t ignore that, so it’s extremely important to get more people,” she said.

Finland offered to free up space in its hospitals for ICU patients from Sweden but there was no deal struck immediately.

Sweden already has one of the highest death rates in Europe. Of its 10 million people, around 8300 had died from COVID-19 by late December.

David Steadson, a former epidemiologist from the University of Queensland, has called Sweden home for 20 years.

He told news.com.au earlier in the year that the country was suffering because it refused to take the pandemic as seriously as its neighbours had.

Mr Steadson, who himself became infected in March and is still suffering from COVID-19 symptoms including shortness of breath, said he was shocked by the reaction from doctors when he was first diagnosed.

“Having suspected I had COVID-19, I was told not to even go to the doctor for fear of infecting health staff,” he said.

Sweden crisis worsens after its anti-lockdown stance proven a failure
