Illustrator Files Instead Of PDF

I was super excited to make this post, because it was going to be celebratory due to my completing my first major freelance job. I designed a book, cover to cover for a startup publishing/media company, and thought we were done and ready to press the media copy.

However, I recieved an email this morning asking for a different file format for the "print files." I did my layout work in InDesign, artwork in Photoshop/Illustrator. My "print" files were 350dpi PDF/X-1a:2003 with crop and bleed marks. The printing company has asked for editable Illustrator files because the PDF files are not printing clearly enough.

Has anyone else ever run into this? I have never heard of a high res PDF not printing clearly enough. Could I have missed something in my PDF settings? Strange . . . .

______________
Brochure printing
