Mac Pro Update by June 2010?

Yup..for some of us here are awaiting it, finally it's available this August 2010.

New Mac Pro was heard to be based on Intel Xeon 5600, as Intel on 16 March 2010 has announced the launch of its new Xeon 5600 series processors, bringing to market a number of new four-core and six-core processors. Apple for sure with this news going to update it's Mac Pro line.

So now comes to the question, why the delays as rumour says the launch is suppose to be in January 2010 together with Intel launch? For anyone who doesn't know the current Mac Pro (Nahelem) is launch 3 weeks before Intel official launch.

As I read it's could be due to Apple could not cope with the production of new LED screen, which for the first batch for iMac and even for Cinema Display got DOA (yellowing effect). As I went to local Malaysia reseller (don't want to disclose which reseller), I did found the LED Cinema Display has defect , which is wrapping at the edge. I wonder why the all salesperson over there not realizing this defect. As back to Cinema Display, Apple has trademark of launcing high-end system with high-tech display, just like PowerMac G4 with Apple (LCD) 20" Cinema Display back at year 1999.

UPDATES:

Latest XEON:
The "Westmere" processor will give you the choice of 6, 8, and 12 core Mac Pros with up to 12MB of shared L3 cache. Both Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading are supported.

Faster Memory:
Top models now feature 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM.

Faster GPUs:
ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5870 GPUs both with 1GB of GDDR5.

New Cinema Display:
The 27" LED (backlit) Cinema Display that wowed the iMac owners will be soon be available for the Mac Pro (September).

Performance:
Below is the average score compared to previous Nahelem processor (Source:Barefeats.com)
Overall Score 67% faster
Integer Score 74% faster
Floating Point 65% faster
Memory Score 37% faster
Stream Score 98% faster
Apple has posted some performance test results comparing the same two models.

Model Range:

Toyota (USA) to replace 3.8M gas pedals

QUOTE

By KEN THOMAS, Associated Press Writer – 30 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will replace accelerator pedals on 3.8 million recalled vehicles in the United States to address problems with the pedals becoming jammed in the floor mat.
As a temporary step, Toyota will have dealers shorten the length of the gas pedals beginning in January while the company develops replacement pedals for their vehicles, the Transportation Department and Toyota said. New pedals will be available beginning in April, and some vehicles will have brake override systems installed as a precaution.
Toyota, the world's largest automaker, announced the massive recall in late September and told owners to remove the driver's side floor mats to prevent the gas pedal from potentially becoming jammed.
"The safety of our owners and the public is our utmost concern and Toyota has and will continue to thoroughly investigate and take appropriate measures to address any defect trends that are identified," Toyota said in a statement.
Popular vehicles such as the Toyota Camry, the top-selling passenger car in America, and the Toyota Prius, the best-selling gas-electric hybrid, are part of the recall. It includes the 2007-10 model year Camry, 2005-10 Toyota Avalon, 2004-09 Prius, 2005-10 Toyota Tacoma, 2007-10 Toyota Tundra, 2007-10 Lexus ES350 and 2006-10 Lexus IS250/350.
On Tuesday, Toyota announced a recall of 110,000 Tundra trucks from the 2000-03 model years to address excessive rust on the vehicle's frame.
The recall involving the accelerators was Toyota's largest in the U.S. It was prompted by a high-speed crash in August involving a 2009 Lexus ES350 that killed a California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family near San Diego. The Lexus hit speeds exceeding 120 mph, struck a sport utility vehicle, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and burst into flames.
A family member in the runaway Lexus made a frantic 911 call moments before the crash, telling emergency responders that the accelerator was stuck and the driver couldn't stop the car. The call ended as someone was overheard urging others to hold on and pray, followed by a woman's scream.
In Japan, Toyota President Akio Toyoda called the fatal crash "extremely regrettable" and offered his "deepest condolences" to the California family.
Investigators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that a rubber all-weather floor mat found in the wreckage was slightly longer than the mat that belonged in the vehicle, and could have snared or covered the accelerator pedal.
The government has attributed at least five deaths and two injuries to floor mat-related unintended acceleration in the Toyota vehicles and has received reports of more than 100 incidents in which the accelerator may have become stuck. A Massachusetts-based safety consultant who has investigated the Toyota cases, however, has found more than 2,000 incidents involving 16 deaths and 243 injuries potentially tied to the Toyota gas pedals.
To fix the problem, Toyota and the government said dealers will shorten the length of the accelerator pedal on the recalled vehicles and in some cases remove foam from beneath the carpeting near the pedal to increase the space between the pedal and the floor. They said owners of the ES350, Camry and Avalon would be the first to receive notification because the vehicles are believed to have the highest risk for pedal entrapment.
Toyota plans to install a brake override system on the Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES350, IS350 and IS250 models as an "extra measure of confidence," Toyota and NHTSA said. The brake override system, commonly called a "smart brake," will ensure the vehicle will stop if both the brake and the accelerator pedals are applied simultaneously.
Toyota also plans to make the brake override system standard equipment throughout the Toyota and Lexus lineup starting with January 2010 production of the ES350 and Camry. Most new models will get the equipment by the end of 2010.
Dealers will be instructed on how to modify the pedals before the end of the year and will begin shortening the accelerators in 2010. New replacement pedals are expected to be available for some models beginning in April and will be provided even if the vehicles have already received a modified pedal under the recall.
The automaker and government regulators have been discussing a potential fix for several weeks. In late September, Toyota announced the recall and told owners to remove driver's side floor mats and not replace them until the company had determined a remedy for the problem. The automaker said unhooked floor mats or replacement mats stacked on top of the originals could lead to stuck accelerators.
In early November, Toyota issued a statement saying NHTSA had confirmed "that no defect exists in vehicles in which the driver's floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured." But in a rare rebuke, NHTSA accused Toyota of releasing misleading information about the recall, saying removing the mats did not "correct the underlying defect." Toyota said it was not the company's intention to mislead anyone.
If a vehicle accelerator pedal becomes stuck and a driver can't dislodge it, Toyota advises drivers to press on the brake with both feet and then shift the vehicle into neutral, which will disengage the transmission. The automaker says drivers should continue braking until the vehicle comes to a stop.
A driver can also try shutting off the engine or turning the key to the "ACC" position on the ignition. Drivers will not lose control of the steering or the brakes. But once the vehicle is turned off the driver won't have the benefit of power brakes or power steering. For vehicles that have a start/stop button for the engine, drivers are advised to hold the button for three seconds to turn it off.
For more information, owners can contact Toyota at 800-331-4331 or the NHTSA hot line at 888-327-4236.

This problems occurs to Camry and IS250/350. So Camry and Lexus owner, be careful or if not you'll be killed by your own car.

Mac Pro 'Nahelem' 4-Core versus 8-Core

You've seen the Cinebench and Geekbench on various websites for both 4-core and 8-core Nehalem Mac Pros but what about real world applications? The 4-core is much more affordable but are there significant performance gotchas that could make you regret not going for the 8-core? After some testing of both the 4-core and 8-core 2.93GHz Mac Pro (both with 12GB of RAM and the Radeon HD 4870), we have a few bare facts to share.

HOW BIG IS THE PERFORMANCE GAP?

Source: http://www.barefeats.com

Looking at the figures, looks like not much the gain for me to most of our favourite application, Photoshop. Even iTunes also showing bad performance in 8-core. Now i wonder whether 8-core 'Nahelem' giving good worth of money or just a crap..

For those who are not familiar with this engine, it incorporates Cam Profile Switching (which is where the ‘CPS’ comes from), a mechanism which varies intake valve timing to enhance performance throughout the rpm range. The mechanism was developed by Lotus Engineering, a subsidiary of Proton.

Additionally, the Campro CPS engine also has a Variable Intake Manifold (VIM) which optimises the intake airflow volume according to driving conditions and is especially helpful in boosting torque at the low end. The VIM is a more sophisticated version of the Intake Air-fuel Module (IAFM) used in the Campro 1.3-litre engine of the new Saga.

The maximum power output of the new Campro 1.6 CPS engine is 125 bhp (about 92 kW), 13% more than the 110 bhp on the non-CPS/VIM Campro engine. The new engine, in addition to providing smooth and responsive drivability, is said to be environment-friendly and complies with the latest European emission regulations.

With the CPS mechanism, Proton claims that the new Waja offers significant improvement in terms of drivability with maximum torque now increased to 150Nm. More importantly, the criticism of non-CPS engine that was first launched with the Gen2 – poor low-end torque – is now claimed to be addressed and Proton states that there is ‘better response and torque launch at low engine speeds of between 2000 - 2500 rpm when driving in the city’. During highway driving, it is also claimed that there will be better overtaking performance in the third, fourth and fifth gears within the 2,500 - 4,500 rpm engine speed range. The new Waja is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

There are also changes to the interior design of the model to add further value to customers. The model now comes with electric remote door mirror with electric folding housing, front seat with 3-way adjustable head rest (up, down and tilt), gated auto gear shifter (for automatic transmission), new centre panel switches and finishing, as well as a keyless trunk remote system, ABS, fog lamps, alloy rims and leather upholstery as standard.

Other additional features include xenon headlamps auto-levelling (so that other motorists are not dazzled), dual tailpipes, UV-cut windscreen glass and a ‘Euro-compliant body structure’.

"Proton is striving to improve ourselves in every aspect, particularly in terms of product offerings. With that in mind, we felt it was time the Waja evolved as well. The time is right for this change and I'm optimistic the market will receive this new model in a positive manner," said Proton MD, Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

Waja Owners Head count:

<div class="spoilertop" The Waja is the first Malaysian-designed car, based on the Mitsubishi Carisma and Volvo S40. Initially, the Waja was powered by a Mitsubishi 4G18 1.6 L engine; beginning 2006, Proton's own 1.6 L Campro engine served as a replacement. In the end of 2005, another variant of the exclusive Waja with a longer wheelbase and powered by a Mitsubishi 6A12 2.0 L V6 engine known as Proton Waja Chancellor was launched.

The name Waja, which means "tough (as steel)", reflects the strength of the steel used for the Waja compared with the previous models. The name was chosen partly to counter the perception in the domestic market that Proton cars were less strong. In the United Kingdom, the Waja is sold as Proton Impian.

The Campro engine is the first automotive engine ever developed together with Lotus by the Malaysian carmaker, Proton.[1] The name Campro is short for Cam Profile. This engine powers the Proton Gen-2, the Proton Satria Neo, the Proton Waja Campro, the Proton Persona as well as Proton's future models. The Campro engine is aimed to show Proton's ability to make their own engines that produces good power output and meets newer emission standards.

All Campro engines incorporate with drive-by-wire technology (specifically electronic throttle control) for better response,[1] eliminating the need for friction-generating mechanical linkages and cables. There have been some issues with cracking oil sumps but apparently Proton have introduced a new part recently to solve this problem. A recall has not been announced.

Basic DOHC engine

The basic Campro engine coded as S4PH is a basic DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L engine that produces 110 bhp (82 kW) @ 6,500 rpm of horsepower and 148 N-m of torque. This is the engine that powers the Proton Gen-2. The S4PH engine can be fitted with Cam Profile Switching (CPS) and Variable Inlet Manifold (VIM) technology. Besides this 1.6 Litre engine, Proton has produced the 1.3 Litre version of the Campro engine.

Even though the S4PH engine seems to be quite powerful at higher revs, its performance is reportedly sluggish at lower revs and this is proven by driving the Gen-2 uphills where drivers who drive the manual transmission version have to shift a lot between 2nd gear and 3rd gear. This is due to its torque dip in the crucial 2,000 ~ 3,000 rpm operating range, where the torque actually decreases slightly before picking up back to the maximum torque at 4,000 rpm. This torque characteristic can clearly be seen in manufacturer published engine performance curves.

Before the engine is ready to be installed in the Gen-2 cars, Proton installed the engine in the Waja specialized for on-road tests.

Currently the Campro engines installed in the Gen-2 has none of the promised cam profile switching (CPS) and variable inlet manifold technologies. No date nor any information has been known as to when Proton will equip its models with the promised full-spec engine.

Another engine option for the basic DOHC engine is a 1.3L engine coded as S4PE. The S4PH engine produces 94 bhp (70 kW) @ 6,000 rpm and the torque of 120 N-m @ 4,000 rpm, much more powerful than most 1.3L rivals, even with variable valve timing technology, though it too suffers for this omission (like its bigger brother) by displaying a torque dip at typical engine operating speeds.

The bore x stroke dimensions for both engines are as follows:-

* S4PH (1.6L): 76 x 88 mm, resulting the displacement of 1597 cc.
* S4PE (1.3L): 76 x 73.4 mm, resulting the displacement of 1332 cc.

Comparison 4g18 & Campro

Proton Waja external resources aka. 'Goodies'

- Proton Waja Club v.4
- Proton Waja Club v.3
- Proton Waja Club v.2
- Proton Waja Club

http://www.idmoc.com/Download/MITSUBISHI%2...0DIAGNOSTIC.pdf

Toyota recalls cars in China

So all the fanboys of Toyota, better read the article below. Then you know some of the truth. Not just small model but the huge luxury car also affected.

QUOTE

Toyota recalls more than 120,000 cars in China

BEIJING (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. has issued a recall for more than 120,000 cars in China to fix a problem that could result in loss of steering control, China's quality watchdog said Thursday in the latest piece of bad news for the Japanese automaker.

Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., a joint venture between Toyota and China's FAW Group, will recall 121,930 vehicles beginning Friday, according to a notice on the Web site of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The notice said the recalled models include Crown and Reiz luxury sedans produced between 2005 and 2006, and Lexus cars produced between 2004 and 2006.

The agency said that manufacturing defects could cause the electric power steering systems to fail.

It was not clear if the same models would be recalled in other countries. Toyota officials in Japan could not immediately be reached for comment late on Thursday.

Toyota will contact owners of the affected vehicles, conduct checks and replace defective parts without charge, the Chinese agency said.

The notice did not say if any accidents have resulted from the defects.

The recall announcement was the latest in a string of bad news for Japan's No. 1 automaker. On Monday, the company said it was sinking into its first operating loss in seven decades. Then Wednesday, Toyota reported that global vehicles sales had plunged 21.8 percent in November - its biggest drop in eight years.-AP

Source:The Star Online

12bit (32 kHz/4 track)setting in DV camcoder

Hi everybody.

Hope that someone could explain in more about my topics. I've been using DV camcoders for more than 4 years and found that DV cams can record 12bit (32 kHz/4 track) audio. What does it means? Is it giving me some kind of surround sound? How can i extract this track from the video and compiled it as discreete channel (eg. 4.1 or 5.1)? Currently i'm using PowerMac G4 with iMovie and Final Cut to do my videos.

Mac OS X 'Snow Leopard'

I just went to the MacLife and Apple website.

Looking at the new Snow Leopard is a good step taken by Apple to improve the MacOS X performance, such as going to 64bit applications, multi-core processing enhancement, Quicktime X etc..

But hearing the rumors the new OS going to make PowerPC processor-based Macs in dark side, cause they putting the minimum requrements on 'Intel-based' only processor...looks like Steve Jobs don't keep his promises to support PowerPC...

I feel bad about this development anyone else out there...

And not forget your's software also have to do major upgrade since it's have to go for 64Bit engine,no carbon support..Remember the time when Photoshop CS2 can't take advantage of Intel's Mac architecture, all Apple Pro application (Final Cut Studio etc.) can't run in Intel's Mac , so mac owners have to buy new software, or even did agin their investment cause current Mac is obsolete on new release..

Another Link on 'Snow Leopard'
