Men who exposed the melamine fiasco

Zhao Lianhai, 38, whose own five-year-old son fell sick during the crisis, was charged with "making a public disturbance" by a court in the Beijing suburb of Daxing. If found guilty, Mr Zhao faces up to five years in prison.

At least six children died and more than 300,000 fell ill after drinking baby formula and other milk that contained melamine, an industrial plastic. Melamine was used to "bulk up" watered-down milk but causes kidney stones to form in children.

In response, Mr Zhao set up a website to spread information about the symptoms of melamine poisoning to other parents. He also quickly became the leading face of a movement by parents to claim compensation for medical bills.

Mr Zhao, who was arrested last November and has not seen his family since, pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was not allowed to call witnesses, but he was permitted to read a short statement. "We should be firm with our principles and beliefs, otherwise it will affect all our souls, in which case we will really be guilty," he said.

Li Fanping, his lawyer, said Mr Zhao had not caused a public disturbance, but had merely defended his rights and those of other parents. "Causing a disturbance is part of the crime of hooliganism," said Mr Li. "But Mr Zhao only talked about the issue in private, in a room, or in the street when he was interviewed by journalists, or when he was outside the courthouse [to hear the verdicts in the trial of the company responsible for the melamine crisis]."

Li Xuemei, Mr Zhao's wife, said she had "prepared for the worst case scenario, a five-year sentence". She added: "I brought our son to court. He has not seen his father for months. He misses him a lot. We have no idea what has happened inside the court."

Around 30 to 40 of Mr Zhao's supporters also attended, standing outside the court in the rain and protesting his innocence.

Counterstrike wallhacker got stabbed

A gamer accused of cheating in a net café game of CounterStrike narrowly escaped death after irate players skewered his head on a knife.

The incident began in a net café in China’s northern province of Jilin, when a group of youths apparently noticed a 17-year-old boy they had been playing CounterStrike with had been cheating by using a “wallhack” to allow himself to see through walls.

An argument began and a fight broke out outside the café. During the fight the cheater had a 30cm knife thrust into his left temple, with the blade only being stopped by the other side of his skull.

His assailants fled the scene after inflicting this injury, and he was quickly taken to hospital in an ambulance, still remaining conscious. Doctors decided to operate immediately.

Doctors explain the blade narrowly avoided major arteries, avoiding a devastating haemorrhage, and failed to impair his motor control despite passing through areas of the brain associated with such.

They were able to carefully extract the blade after opening his skull in an operation lasting some 10 hours, but noted that the knife was rusty – he has been placed under observation in case fragments of rust left inside his brain cause complications.

The net café in question was apparently popular with local youths as it did not require ID – government fear mongering about gaming culture has seen a variety of draconian restrictions placed on net cafés, so the café may be facing some unwelcome attention from the authorities.

China cooking oil (Old news)

The news that a tenth of all cooking oil used in China may be made from recycled sewage and laced with toxic contaminants has stunned China.

Originating from a report on a state radio station, the news that “Chinese are eating 3,000,000 tons of ‘recycled cooking oil’ each year, but it is 100 times more toxic than arsenic!” spread throughout China in a matter of days.

The cooking oil is apparently “recycled” from raw sewage taken from sewers and elsewhere, which is heated and filtered. After filtration the liquid is transparent and free of particulate matter, and can be rendered into cooking oil.

Fears over the toxicity of the recycled oil are high. Significant levels of aflatoxins have been detected, a poison said to be “100 times more toxic than arsenic,” and known to cause growth defects in children and cancer.

Viral and bacterial contaminants are thought not to be a problem, assuming the sewage-oil is properly boiled in preparation. Despite the obvious hygiene and safety problems of using treated sewage in cooking, its usage is thought to be widespread, as the “recycled” cooking oil is all but indistinguishable from normal cooking oil, in all but one aspect – its price.

It costs only 300 yuan ($45) a ton to manufacture, half the price of regular oil, and it is said to be common use throughout China – estimates are that it constitutes a tenth of all cooking oil used in China.

Chinese food safety regulators, such as they are, launched an immediate emergency investigation, although it is not clear if they actually previously approved the activity.

China’s record on food safety is of course already utterly abysmal, but if as widespread as reported this could turn out to be the most damaging scandal to date, as cooking oil is an integral part of food preparation in China.
Nations importing cheap cooked foodstuffs from China may also be concerned that they have been inadvertently poisoning their children by trading with a nation in which regulation and business ethics are all but unknown.

I'm talking about picking up Javascript and using Greasemonkey to do funky stuff with LYN's forum itself.

UI facelift, adding new kick ass functionalities to the forum, whatever.

We'll set a deadline for just enough time to learn JS and come up with the Greasemonkey script. Then everyone post it up here and we'll piss on each other's creations.
