RANT : Comment on LYN commenting culture

Ok. This is a rant but on a relevant issue. Take it with an open mind and if you have nothing constructive to say than I would appreciate it if you did not post any comment on this topic.

To 'mods' and 'admin' and 'staff'. I think this is a relevant issue and it happens way too much here. You all may not like it but that's the truth.

On to the topic:

The Culture of Commenting on pics in LYN

Someone post a pic or a series of pics and asks for comments. More often than not one of the below happens:

1. If pics are those of pretty girls then comments would 90% of the time be:

- Wah! Moar!!!
- Nice model!
- Droolz...
- Why never ask me to tag along for shoot?

2. If pics are those of landscape, then 90% of the time it gets ignored or comments such as:

- horizon senget
- under / over exposed
- nice pic

Or even worse sometimes comments are like:

- It's just a snapshot

Now are these comments really helpful in any way? After reading a comment like 'It's a snapshot' what else is there to help the poster with? What can the poster do to avoid taking a 'snapshot' in future?

And when I post some pics just to share and say there's no PP done and that the purpose I put that statement is so I don't need to reply to comments like 'WB out' or 'Pic too warm' or 'horizon senget' and other basic technical stuff, I get comments like:

- wah.. like so proud that no PP is done

- heh, easy way out lor.......... if everyone put that statement we all nothing to comment other than composition.
want to say photog careless in WB - cannot also, statement already there.
want to say photog careless in choosing background - cannot also, statement already there. means photog don't do crop.

- If you can't even fix these BASIC stuff and sooooo afraid of people commenting about all these BASIC stuff, I would suggest you to keep it for your own view. Picture gallery section is open for everyone to C&C. If you can't take comments constructively, no point posting the pictures here when you are not welcoming any comments.

- I can say this is nonsense. Modern photography does include post processing. You can get correct WB straight from your cam if you know how to. If your WB is out, no crop, composition is bad, then what for you post your photos here? Like ***** said, there's really nothing we can comment if you say like that. Then there's no point to "show off" your so called "Directly from cam" photos.

PP is NOT a crime

Just my 0.01 cents... No offense..

Are these comments really helpful?

If you are not a total beginner that have absolutely no idea of how a DSLR and the digital workflow that comes after a shoot works, then you WILL know that WB, over/under exposure and tilting pictures CAN be EASILY fixed in post editing IF you shot in RAW.

How many times do we need to be reminded of that BASIC stuff once you already know them?

The ONLY thing that CANNOT be fixed in post editing is COMPOSITION and that most of the time COMPOSITION makes or breaks an image. So commenting on composition is way more helpful and meaningful that saying WB out or some other technical aspect that can be fixed in PP.

I rarely see LYN members commenting on other aspects like:

How to set up effective lighting to enhance a pic. Like how do you balance ambient exposure with your flash usage on your subject.
How to make use of ambient light with a flash as fill to create a more striking picture.
How on axis flash and off camera flash affects your pic.
How to make a picture more balanced by including background or foreground interest.
How to pose a model so that they appear more relaxed and natural.
How to use leading lines to guide a viewer into your pic.
How diagonal elements makes a more dynamic picture.
How to train one's eye to 'see' in more artistic way to improve on composition.
How to effectively use Ultra Wide Angle lens - distorted faces is not one of them!
How different focal lengths affect your pics.
How to use your existing gears effectively rather than asking the poster to buy the latest and greatest. Or extolling the 'virtues' of having high end and mega expensive gears.
What other skills apart from the basic technical know how will improve your photography.

Even more rarely can I see LYN members (inclusive of the seniors) having a meaningful discussion on a conflict of viewpoints and then agreeing to disagree on the issue and affirming that each has his or her own strengths and coming to a conclusion that there is no absolute right or wrong.

And this is the reason why LYN Photography forum will remain an immature forum in terms of photography. And why there's not much pictures here that can create a truly 'WOW!' response. Most of the time it is some shots of some models in sexy poses.

I don't profess to be a 'pro' in any way but this kind of immature commenting culture here does not in any help me to improve. I feel for the newbie that comes in here to learn.

I do agree that some beginners will need tutoring on WB and other basic issues but this can be easily rectified by putting up a sticky on this and referring the beginners to that topic. What else can be done to help a person move fro a being a beginner to a more advanced level?
