Dropped my tablet T_T

There's a huge crack across the screen. More importantly, the screen has become non-responsive to touch. I can still unlock it with the dockpad, but the navigation becomes crazy after that.

How much is it roughly to repair?

Dear lowyatians,

I'm wondering if SOCSO will give loans to students studying in NUS, Singapore.

If not, could anyone recommend me a local loan which is easy on the interest? I'm trying my luck to look for a loan cheaper than the tuition loan offered by OCBC singapore.

Thank you for your time

Book Sale at Carrefour

Hello, not sure if this is the right section to be posting this up. But I figured news like this is better shared! (and everyone in this section reads)

There is a novel clearance going on at Carrefour Subang Jaya, First Floor (at the Stationary Section)

All *new* novels are selling at RM5 each! Including hard covers.

The variety of books available is huge. You can find most genre's of books there - biographies, chic lits, murder mysteries, horror, romance etc etc

As this is a clearance sale, you will probably not see current best sellers or the better known authors out there. But even still, the quality (as in the content) of the books look pretty good.

I bought 3 books (not a book buyer sort of person actually) and here are the titles:

The Memory Artists by David Mitchell
-Winner of The Commonwealth Writer's Prize

People I Wanted To Be
-by Gina Ochsner

China Dreams by Sid Smith
-Winner of the Whitbread First Novel Award

Haven't read any of them but they look very promising.
I'm sharing the joy! Hope hardcore bookworms pay a visit if it's near you
400 dogs left on an empty island

Update: Our own Lowyat forumers rescue mission thread - http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1023541

Summary: Because of dog over-population problem, the residents sent 400 stray dogs to an empty island. The dogs would die out of starvation or drown in the sea while trying to swim back to shore.

The hungry dogs would literally eat the dead dogs. Literal meaning of dog eat dog world..

Plight of the swamp dogs

PORT KLANG: Animal activist Sabrina Yeap couldn’t hold back her tears when she saw the condition of the dogs that Pulau Ketam residents had dumped on an uninhabited island.

“They were wandering aimlessly, often looking towards Pulau Ketam with eyes that appeared empty and listless,’’ said Yeap who went to Pulau Tengah last Saturday to check on the welfare of the dogs.

Several fishermen, a volunteer, and blogger TV Smith accompanied Yeap on the trip to the island, which is in the middle of a mangrove swamp.

“The fishermen told us that some of the dogs had died of starvation, and those that are alive ate the carcasses,’’ said Yeap.

Waiting to be rescued: Several of the abandoned dogs on Pulau Tengah looking wistfully at the approaching visitors. Inset: Yeap bringing an injured Hope back to the mainland.

Pulau Ketam residents had trapped some 400 dogs and transported them to Pulau Tengah to ease the stray dog population on their island.

Yeap said the fishermen told her that some of the dogs had tried to swim back to the main island but had been shooed away, resulting in some of them drowning.

“It was a pitiful sight, and I couldn’t stop crying after I saw what was happening to the dogs there,’’ said Yeap.

She added that she would be taking 20 dogs to her Furry Friends Farm in Kundang to be rehabilitated and eventually re-homed.

“I wish I could take in more dogs, but can’t due to space and financial constraints,’’ said Yeap, who managed to save a dog she found trapped in the mud.

The dog, since named Hope, is recuperating at a veterinary clinic pending transfer to Yeap’s sanctuary.

Yeap said she hoped farm and orchard owners would come forward to adopt some of the abandoned dogs.

Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam said he would be visiting Pulau Ketam to talk to the residents over what they had done (Pulau Ketam and Pulau Tengah fall under the Kapar parliamentary constituency).

“It is wrong to dump dogs where they cannot survive. I will bring this matter up with the relevant authorities,’’ he said.

Manikavasagam added that he was prepared to accompany Yeap and Smith on their next visit to Pulau Tengah.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) spokesman Jacinta Johnson said a relief team would be sent to Pulau Tengah to try and rescue the dogs.

“We will try to round up the healthier dogs and neuter them. For the weaker ones, we have no choice but to put them to sleep,” she added.

The SPCA would also seek the cooperation of Pulau Ketam residents to set up a temporary dog shelter if required.

Source: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...3068&sec=nation

PS: I AM SO ANGRY do these people even have feelings??!!?? Manikavasagam said he believed the move to transport the dogs were the work of ill-informed municipal councillors acting beyond their powers.

“I don’t blame the villagers because they have been struggling with the problem for so long but the councillors should know better.”

Manikavasagam who visited Pulau Selat Kering where some of the dogs were abandoned said the state should tighten the leash on some of their councillors.

Speaking to the media today, some villagers tried their hand at damage control by claiming half the dogs abandoned had already made their way back to Pulau Ketam. “I’ve seen groups of dogs, up to eight of them sometimes, swimming back during low tide,” said one villager. However, this had been disputed by Sabrina Yeap from Furry Friends Farm which has been mounting rescue operations to save the animals. “There is no way half the dogs could swim back to Pulau Ketam because of their weakened condition.”

Yeap added that websites highlighting the plight of the animals had helped raise over RM5,000 from outraged members of the public who want them to rescue the dogs. Also helping to rescue the dogs from the island this morning were volunteers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Save a Stray.

Save a Stray founder Jacqueline Tsang said despite their best efforts they managed to just lure two dogs into their cages.Tsang said the Veterinary Services Department needs to step in with a tranquiliser gun in order to sedate and rescue the other dogs.

Meanwhile, another 1,500 stray dogs remain in Pulau Ketam. Tsang said most of the dogs are offspring of abandoned pets and the villagers have themselves to blame. She said a long term solution for the problem is for the strays to be sterilised to keep them from breeding. However, the move could cost as much as RM90 per animal and they are appealing to the government to step in.

Tsang said the money spent capturing and transporting the animals to the islands could have been better used to sterilise the animals. Villagers and volunteers from non-governmental organisations are expected to meet officials from the Klang Municipal Council on Monday to find a solution to the problem.

For info or enquiries:
The Rescue Mission Secretariat at +6012 378 3730 (Janet) or +6012 320 8090 (Zalina)
The Sec's E-mail is dogrescue.pk@gmail.com

[u]

How you can help from home - Donate:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(joe_mamak @ May 8 2009, 12:56 AM)

Seriously, guys.

Please spread the word. They need money.

Forward this to your friends and relatives.

http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue/index.html
http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue/updates.html -

Mon, 04/05/09:
HOPE AND HOPELESSNESS
Sabrina called to say the terrier pup rescued on Saturday is doing fine at the clinic. She will also act as water safety officer or 'life guard' for Sabrina and the volunteers.

Anyone knows anyone who can volunteer a boat and crew for free or for hire at nominal rates? It should be big enough to take about eight people including space for storing about 10 to 15 cages. If we can find a private boat, it will solve a lot of our headaches.

Kind folks are asking how they can donate. Funds can be banked in or transferred to:

Furry Friends Farm account at CIMB 1457-000-1182-05-6

You can also transfer via PayPal to tvsmith@gmail.com

Please retain transaction record / slip for verification and audit purposes.

Thank you all for your generosity. But what I saw yesterday was even worse. Though never a dog lover, there was something that touched this cold heart of a crime journalist.

RESCUED: The two dogs saved from the Selat Kering island taking a rest after they were put on the boat yesterday

Something that made me care for these creatures a little more than I would have expected to. I had followed the early morning rescue team to save dogs that had been unceremoniously dumped on an island some 25 minutes by boat from Pulau Ketam.

During the ride, I was thinking that I would be seeing a pack of angry snarling wild dogs, all barking at us, waiting to be rescued.

Animals that have gone mad from days of starvation, or from the fact that they had eaten one of their kind. And were just ready to snap at the next living thing that came their way. But as the boat neared Pulau Selat Kering, what I saw was truly a pitiful sight.

An island it was, but there wasn’t even enough land for the dogs to stand on!

We spotted a cute terrier-like puppy crouched on a branch, looking forlornly at the sea. It looked like that thick branch was the only “land” it had known for quite a while.

When workers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) waded onto a small shore (always wary of quicksand) and placed a pack of feed to lure the dogs, it was then that I thought I saw more in the lives these dogs had been forced to cling to. They were thin and emaciated.

Most hardly had the strength to walk straight, let alone bark. In a short while a group of dogs gathered around the food, quickly chewing and swallowing what they could, lest the “miracle” disappeared all too soon.
And as we observed the feeding scene before us, I thought to myself, what could that one dog be thinking? Of the days he fed on scraps of who-knows-what and if he was lucky, a fish carcass?

Of the day he witnessed one of his kind becoming food for the others or how he succumbed to hunger and took a bite too? Of how and why these humans have come here. Possibly to haul them in cages to another prison of sorrow? Or maybe he was pondering the fate of a kinsman, who braved the open sea in search of home, and failed.

The wide-eyed dog simply trotted over and joined his two friends to munch on the food. But then came time for action, to stop this “undogly” life for these dogs, and the catchers sprang into action. Coming slowly with a rope, the rescue workers soon realised that these dogs were still pretty scared of humans as they bolted to hide.

One black one gave up when two men came and grabbed it firmly. He was brought on the boat and placed in a spacious cage. I wondered if he knew he was the lucky one. He would get treatment, shelter, food, water, and maybe one day an owner who’d give him a warm, fuzzy home.

Such hopelessness. Such despair. Such disgrace to life. This, was all man’s doing.

Story + information on how you could further help these dogs:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(brownie @ May 7 2009, 12:51 PM)

News From SPCA Selangor
For release on Wednesday, 6th May 2009
Abandoned Dogs Cannibalizing Each Other SPCA Selangor & Save A Stray Start Emergency Relief Efforts Today

4th May 2009, KLANG – SPCA Selangor Animal Inspectors and Save A Stray founder Jacqueline Tsang made another trip to Pulau Ketam and the neighbouring uninhabited island on Monday to check on the dogs that had been abandoned on Pulau Selat Kering.
What they witnessed confirmed their worst fear.

The dogs have no choice but to eat carcasses of other dogs, as there is no other source of food available for weeks

Upon approaching Pulau Selat Kering, the team saw approximately 10 dogs on the fringe of the island. When they moved closer, a horrific sight unfolded. Several emaciated dogs were crowded and hunched around something – they were hungrily feasting on the remains of another dog.

They were fighting amongst each other for a small meal. The stronger dogs dominated, while weak dogs sat at a distance and watched helplessly. Nearby, a weak dog was screaming because several dogs were trying to bite her. The sound of dogs fighting could be heard in the distance intermittently. The dogs were starving, and very skinny – they had not had a proper food source for weeks.
Dogs eating the dog kibbles hungrily

About 15 more dogs were seen resting among the mangroves. Inspector Murugan walked through the swampland and quickly emptied two 15-kilo bags of dog food onto the sand, and filled up a bucket with clean drinking water. The dogs immediately rushed out towards the food, and ate hungrily.

Upon reaching back to the main island (Pulau Ketam), the team met with the Sungai Lima village head (also facing a stray dog crisis), and Mr Loo (Secretary of Ketam Dogs Catching Committee). They agreed to cooperate with SPCA & SAS on emergency rescue and relief efforts for the abandoned dogs, as well as long-term plans sterilize the dogs and either rehome or relocate them.

Immediate Action

Today (6th May 2009), Jacqueline from SAS, SPCA Animal Inspectors, SPCA Vet Dr Goh and SPCA Kennel worker Maran have gone to Pulau Selat Kering to start catching and transporting as many abandoned dogs back to the main island of Pulau Ketam for rehabilitation and safekeeping. Dogs that are too weak or sickly will be euthanized humanely on the spot, to prevent them from suffering further.

The dogs will be provided with food and water everyday, and will be monitored while confined in cages. Once they are healthy enough, the dogs will be neutered and re-homed or re-located.Thus far, 10 cages have been secured (5 donated, and 5 purchased by SPCA) for the transportation and confinement of the dogs. Updates will be posted on a daily basis on the SPCA Website www.spca.org.my
How You Can Help
Approximately 100 - 200 dogs are still on the island, and need to be relocated immediately
SPCA and SAS are appealing to the public to contribute to their Pulau Ketam fund, to aid the emergency rescue and relief efforts over the next several weeks. Funds will be utilized to hire boats for transportation of the dogs, purchase dog food, medical supplies and cages. The start-up fund is RM1,300 – proceeds from a networking event SPCA organized last Sunday.

We also appreciate donations in kind – 3’ x 3’ multipurpose cages, dog biscuits and canned food, food and water bowls, towels, water storage containers, and flea/tick spray. There are hundreds of dogs and puppies that need your help, every bit counts!

Background Information
Pulau Ketam consists of two settlements - Pulau Ketam Village and Sungai Lima Village. Both villages claim to have been facing a stray dog crisis for the last several years. Earlier this month, newspapers reported that Pulau Ketam villagers were trapping stray dogs and transporting them to a 3 vacant island in a desperate attempt to reduce the population of dogs. Sungai Lima villagers later started a similar operation.

Pulau Ketam villagers reported that 312 dogs had already been trapped and abandoned on uninhabited Pulau Tengah out of an estimated population of 2000, while Sungai Lima villagers estimated their stray dog population to be around 600.

SPCA Animal Inspectors Cunera and Murugan, and SAS founder Jackie Tsang made a trip to Pulau Ketam earlier this week. They found that most of the villagers owned dogs themselves, and had no intention of causing harm to the strays on the island. They were frustrated at the stray dog population, which is quickly spiraling out of control – the villagers estimate that there are approximately 2000 strays on the island. The villagers said that they did not want the dogs caught and euthanized, and thought that leaving them to survive on another island would be better. The villagers were upset with the reports in the media, which claimed that they had been burning the dogs or abusing them – which they denied doing.

The team found that during the day time, there were dozens of stray cats and dogs roaming the island. However, when they surveyed a part of the town from 12.30pm-1.30am, they counted 82 dogs in just a small area. The dogs look generally healthy, with several suffering from minor injuries.

At a meeting with the village leaders, they agreed to support a mass sterilization effort for both stray and pet dogs (and cats) by SPCA and SAS.

PLEASE HELP US HELP THESE DOGS.

Working for only 2 months

Hello there,

question: Are there any companies which hire employees for just 2 months? (in Subang/KL area)

I'll be leaving the country to further my education in 3 months.

Currently I am working on a 6-month contract job for an MNC-status company.

My problem is that I hate my current job, my job description has changed from Customer Service to IT Data Registration (due to down-sizing of headcount from previous department, contract staff are first on the chopping board)

Everyday, I grow more and more restless in my office cubicle because I have not learnt anything besides coping with office politics/gossip (and again the stories are repetitive... )

I have about 2 months left in my contract, when the recruitment agency who got me my original job offered me a Customer Service position for an Airlines company. I was frankly very interested , but they withdrew their offer however when they found out I was only available for 2 months.

I am considering a mini-career switch very seriously now, but I understand most companies hire part-time employees on a minimum 6 month contract.

I cannot lie and pull out of the job after 2 months because it is very obvious I will be continuing my studies (I am only 19 this year with decent STPM results, I couldn't fool my previous boss that I was looking for a permanent job)

I learn fast and have been told that I have good PR skills because I am sincerely passionate about people.

I need a job because I need the money as back-up for my living expenses when i study in Singapore.

I turn to Lowyat for constructive advice on what I should do. I really want to learn something new in line with meeting new people so sticking it out with my current job is preferably not an option

Thank you to the people who are of genuine help

Let's share! What sort of qualities do you look for in a person?

I'll start to get the ball rolling:

Summary:

I like guys who are -

*Playful but mature when it comes to responsabilities,
*Caring to every existent being about him (old people, children, animals, friends, strangers, ME)
*Open and intelligent to discuss random + various topics in depth
*Patient with lots of tolerance in terms of time and whims
*Inspiring by actions

I am particularly attracted to guys who are great with animals/children + do dishes (wtf)

Original Perfect Man list (Hidden in spoiler cos friggin long, read at own risk)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Physically:

Face: Either boyish-cute or Pan-Asian looks, or better yet - both! I like clean-cut sort of men. Smooth shaven chin for better kisses. Must posses a contagious grin/smile No wax/gel on hair so I may hygienically rest my cheek on top of his head or run my fingers through his tousled locks.

Height: Ideally half a head taller than me (I am about 170cm) So he may comfortably kiss my forehead/ let me wear my heels without being the butt of other people's jokes. But in reality I have been dating guys who were slightly shorter than me :S

Build: Toned, but must not look like he is on steroids. Arms are somewhat muscular so he may give great bear hugs. Must be strong enough to give me regular piggy-back rides, heh!

Style: Smart casual. Think of crisp long sleeve shirts and good jeans. I think it is sexy when a guy is dressed confidently.

Personality:
Caring: I like going to orphanages/ old folk's homes/ animal shelters and so should he! It is also my litmus test for guys I date. I find it very attractive when a guy can get along with animals, children and old people. If he can care a great deal for something other than himself, imagine how much he will care for the person he loves sighhh

A good sport: To layan me when I am on my most random days. From the big things like going mountain hiking to small things like ballroom dance in a car park. I like a guy who is not afraid to try new things.

Patient: The key to surviving a long term relationship, and a fancy dinner date with me (Hair and make up takes a long time xD)

Compromise: This will be an equal opportunity relationship, mm-hmm!

Little to No temper: Or the ability to forgive little things in a very short time

Passionate & Ambitious: He knows what he wants and he will give it his best to do it. Ambition here is not limited to career, wealth and success but also to achieve a higher purpose in life. Something that will give back to the community or the world (wah!) My man must be able to inspire me, so that I will be motivated through his actions.

Supportive: As I am very ambitious but need constant motivation from the people closest to me.

Dependable: I can trust him with almost any decision and know that he can execute if perfectly.

Friendly: My friends must like him too. This is another litmus test i think all girls should abide by. Sometimes we are so blinded by puppy love, it is important my friends will approve of him being a nice guy.

Full of surprises: Pleasant ones!

Smart: He doesn't need to be a genius, but I must be able to have thoughtful conversations with him about anything at all. Companionship is all about conversation.

Generous: With everything- hugs, kisses, tv shows, haha. Especially Love.

Others: He must not smoke, so that kisses will taste better. He will cook Italian food and pancakes better than me. He will do the dishes voluntarily (because I have yet to meet a man who would do that)

I think above all things, he has to love me with all his heart Mr Perfect!

PS: the above (original list) is just my example of my perfect man if i can make one.
Sending supporting Documents

The story is, I sent my supporting documents to singapore for a uni application on the morning of 24/3/2009. The guy on the counter said it only takes 2 days to get to the university.

When I tracked the number, this was my only update:

24-Mar-2009 23:08 Item dispatch out from origin station PPL SHAH ALAM

any of you experienced a similar experience? So worried it won't reach in time (29/3/2009)

Language medium for UM

Okay, I have already applied for IPTA and my first choice is UM, sastera because I ideally want to take sociology from their Humanities Faculty.

But just a few hours ago, my senior in UM (doing something science-y) casually mentioned/warned that their Sociology classes are conducted in Malay. Is this true??

Also, does this also apply to USM/UKM??

NUS and NTU Application

Hello, STPM results were just released so currently very kin cheong about applications to both NUS and NTU

Many questions regarding:

NTU application:

1)Do we have to write any essays for the application? There is a space provided with a 200 word limit which asks us to list our outstanding achievements with details.

-What does this detail mean? A short paragraph on our experience on the 'outstanding achievement'? What things would be considered important to list as our detail?

-Examples of Outstanding details were things like Olympiads and representing country in international competitions. I have not done either So I am going to include school curriculum inside. But to what extent do I list them out. Do I just list down the ones I have became President for? Do I list down the ones I did during form 6 only? Can I list down BOD positions since Form 3? xD

- Does active participation in various community service groups outside school count as part of Outstanding Achievement?

2) Additional Educational Information: Will it hurt my chances if I leave this blank? Example was listed as having a diploma in etc. I just finished my STPM. Any other examples that may be included here?

NUS application:

1) They provided space for just 2 activities under Outstanding Achievement category.

- If I include participation with a community service outside school, is this considered a National Level achievement? (Because I notice they do have a drop down choice for community service group)

-In school, I was a club President. The school decided to send me as one of the state representatives for a National-Level campaign in another state. Under level do I put National or School?

______________________________________

My overall CGPA for STPM is 3.5, MUET is band 6. What are my chances of getting inside NTU or NUS for Sociology. I have rather strong cocu too, but rumour has it that it does will not affect much at school level.

Sorry for the long questions. Thank you very much to the kind person who replies them Shall include you in my prayers
Best Local Universities

Hello, I did a search on Google and lowyat forums and there were too many opinions with no one to tell me why!

So in your opinion (and why..) which is the best local university right now. Particularly for social sciences like sociology and communications (because they seem to go hand in hand)

STPM results are coming out soon and I need to decide fast So far I know that UM and USM are the most coveted in the country. USM is a pioneer in communications while UM is a pioneer in Malaysia.

What do you think? Please, let me hear your thoughts

Thank you so much for your time. All the best to SPM & STPM students!
University Admission Essay (degree)

Hello! I am currently drafting what might possibly be the most important essay in my life - the University Application Essay.

I did a Google Search and found tips from A-Z on how my essay should sound like. However, most of these tips are for the Ivy League Universities in America which have open topic essays and almost no limit to how long it can be. I am aiming to get inside NUS in Singapore right now and their essay limit is only 2000 characters

The following is taken directly from the online application form-
Essay section: This section is an opportunity for you to elaborate on the information you have provided earlier. You may wish to discuss a special talent, a personal experience or an activity that you have been involved in that is of relevance to the course that you are applying for at the university.

As there is only limited space (2000 characters), you are encouraged to present your ideas in focused and thoughtful manner.

Because every character counts, I am hoping to get opinions and tips from the experienced students/graduates out there on what I should focus on while writing my essay. What do they look for in a potential student?

Ideally I would like to write this in a free-styled story form, and not talk about the information i have provided earlier (which would mostly be about curricular activities i have been in)

Thanks a million in advance!

I brought home a pigeon today because it couldn't/ wouldn't fly. (injured foot it seems)

Trying to feed and take care of it till it regains it's flying abilities.

Problem is this pigeon is a picky eater it has rejected bread and bird seed. Currently only nibbling on organic barley. Worried of malnutrition if this goes on. Any advice on a pigeon's diet?

Wild pigeon also has bird lice. Any way I can get rid of it? Can we bathe pigeons??

All feedback appreciated, thanks!
