XBOX360 failure compared to other consoles

Just found out an article from Gamespot for a coverage which compare the reliability between Wii, PS3 & XBOX360.

Some interesting quore as below :-
- the study found 10 percent of PlayStation 3s surveyed failed within two years of purchase, as did 2.7 percent of Wiis.

-the Xbox 360's failure rate was far higher than its rivals. Some 23.7 percent of those surveyed failed within two years of purchase: 12 percent from the infamous "Red Ring of Death" and 11.7 percent from other problems, including the "E74" error.

- the Wii is the least played of the three major consoles, being used for only 516 minutes per month. By contrast, the Xbox 360 is played over twice as much (1,191 minutes per month), with the PS3 lagging slightly behind it (1,053 minutes per month).

-the Falcon introduction had an adverse immediate effect, with the first two quarters of 2008 seeing first-year 360 failures spike to 10 percent. However, the study points out that a sell-off of older consoles in the fourth quarter of 2007, which then met their maker the following year, could also be a factor.

-Xbox 360 quality has improved dramatically since the third quarter of 2008, shortly before the 65nm CPU/GPU "Jasper" model was introduced. Since then, first-year failure rates have plummeted to below the 4 percent the company projected. Looking at 500 units purchased in 2009, SquareTrade found that less than 1 percent had suffered the Red Ring of Death.

-SquareTrade's analysis of recently purchased 360s appears to back up statements made by Xbox 360 and Xbox Live director of product management Aaron Greenberg.

Connecting xbox360 audio to a Coaxial Digital

I Just brought a Philips HTS3366/98 and found that it has a digital link but using coaxial/RCA connector and that time I never think of hook it up with my xbox until I saw this and I've tried my best to look for such converter but failed unless I purchase it from US and pay another same amount to FedEx...

After a failed attempt to search for such converter I've think of another approach which is to either made it myself OR crack the connector and I've come across to a website which contained a step by step guide to add a RCA connector for Digital Audio.

I've followed the guide and to my surprise that the so called Optical output actually is just added a voltage connector for Toslink diode and the data terminal contains NO CONVERSION CIRCUIT an dthat simply means you can just create a bypass from the toslink terminal and straight to RCA connector and digital RCA on HTS will be able to read flawlessly.

On top of the mod, I've bent the connector so that I can plug in my cheapo HDMI connector and run digital audio at the same time. The end result looks like this:-

Now I'm able to run digital audio on cheapo RCA cable & cheapo HDMI cable. FYI a corner shop in Jln Pasar KL's mall (forgot what's the name) selling the HDMI @ RM15.

Total cost of this mod is just RM3.8 for those RCA jack.

Did anyone recently surveyed about new xbox 360?

While I'm looking for an original asian set of xbox 360, I found most of the game shop do not have stock or only modded machines while who have stock will try to sell it in a higher price.

Anyone have any clue why there's a shortage of original xbox 360?
