Apps that ask for Contact List permission

When installing apps like Signal, WhatsApp, TrueCaller, etc. these apps will request for contact list permission so that they can use your contact's phone numbers to provide you the service.

But in my case, in my contact list I also save custom field's with the personal information of my friends or family

For example in my parent's case I save their name and phone number but I also save things in custom fields like their IC number, Birthday, Bank Account No., and other stuff so that I can refer to this easily.

When I grant apps the "Contacts" permission, do the apps see all these custom fields too or do they just see the name and number?

I've been Googling for this information but I cannot find any useful answers.

Anyone can help with an answer? Particularly if you're an app developer that has apps which requests this permission.

Edit:
I found the Google Developer page for this but I really don't know how to read that coding:
https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/...ntacts-provider

APCN2 Submarine Cable Cut Now

I am hearing rumours from several different people claiming that the APCN2 submarine cable has experienced a cut and this is why we are experiencing some internet slowness now.

Does anyone have a source for this information?

Update 8 Apr 2020 @ 2240hrs:
Thanks to boss [@zerorating]

Looks like there is indeed a cable cut but not with APCN2 - there is news of the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) cable cut near Vietnam. But it happened on the 3rd of April 2020 and is expected to take 2 weeks to repair. Since it happened last Friday and only today seems to have slowness, I'm not sure if this is the root cause of the current slowness.

Source:
https://www.submarinenetworks.com/en/system...tnam-on-april-3
Map:
https://www.submarinecablemap.com/#/submari...ag-cable-system
Note:
You may need to VPN to some other country to see these sites, seems like the pages don't load without VPN.

Update 10 Apr 2020 @ 0225hrs
Confirm that it is due to cable cut with APCN2
https://www.lowyat.net/2020/210400/apcn-2-f...aysia-internet/

Amidst Covid-19 chaos, Muhyiddin tightens grip

Malaysia has no hope lah... gg this country

QUOTE

Amidst Covid-19 chaos, Muhyiddin tightens Bersatu grip, sacks sec-gen
https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/515695

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has tightened his grip on his party by sacking the party's secretary-general Marzuki Yahya.

According to a party source, Marzuki received his termination notice yesterday. The letter was signed by Muhyiddin and dated March 18.

"Muhyiddin cited Article 13.9 of the party constitution to terminate Marzuki's service as the secretary-general without any explanation," said the source.

Malaysiakini has sighted a copy of the letter.

At the time of writing, Marzuki and his aides have yet to respond to Malaysiakini's request for comments.

However, the source said it was unsure if Marzuki's removal was valid as the party constitution would suggest that it had to be discussed by the party's supreme council and approved by the party's chairperson.

The party chairperson is Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is at odds with Muhyiddin. As for Marzuki, he is a staunch Mahathir loyalist.

The secretary-general is a powerful position within the party, tasked with implementing decisions made by the party's supreme council.

The secretary-general will also play a role in administering the party divisional AGMs, which are scheduled to take place in April, culminating in a national AGM and election.

When asked if Mahathir was informed of Marzuki's termination, the source replied: "Of course not."

Mahathir is currently under quarantine at home because he came in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

"In the next one or two days, we have to see what is Tun's response to this. Then only we will know (if the termination was valid)," said the source.

Mahathir and Muhyiddin's relationship soured after the latter played a pivotal role in the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Muhyiddin had led a group of Bersatu MPs out of the coalition and later formed a new coalition government with Umno, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and several other smaller parties.

These parties later agreed to support Muhyiddin as prime minister. He was sworn-in on March 1.

Mahathir commands the loyalty of only a small number of Bersatu MPs and is opposed to Muhyiddin's premiership.

Best Time to Pump Petrol

I was watching F1 and I realised that in F1 they talk about petrol not in Litres (volume) but instead they talk about petrol in KG (weight) - they measure petrol by weight.

When I looked into why this is, I found out that it is because the volume of petrol can change by temperature but the weight of petrol remains the same regardless of the temperature.

This means for example: 1KG of petrol might be 1 litre when it's cold, but it might be 1.1 litre when it's hot.

This got me thinking - all our petrol pumps in Malaysia are measuring by litres. So if you pour 1 litre of petrol when it is hot, you actually get less petrol than if you pour 1 litre of petrol when it's cold.

Does anyone here consider this when filling up?

I see some cars have this really cool concept of putting the number plate as a sticker instead of the normal plastic plate.

Is this legal in Malaysia?

Example:

Singapore's Opportunism Destroying Its Neighbours

Any jalan it sees to protect itself or develop itself, it maximises fully.

Even though there are many victims of this opportunistic behaviour, we can't really blame Singapore for doing what it must to survive. We must blame all the other corrupt South East Asian governments and leaders for allowing their countries to be abused for Singapore's gain.

This is what happens when you have leaders with no sense of nationalism, no vision for their country, and are just there to enrich themselves.

Backing up files without overwriting folders

I am trying to backup stuff from my PC hard drive to my NAS drive and the situation is like this:

My PC hard drive has many many folders and every time I update a file, there's a new copy. Every month or so, I plan to backup to my NAS so last month I got a new NAS and did a complete backup of everything then I deleted all the old files in my PC but I maintain my folder names and structure etc because it's how the files need to be sorted.

Example of 1 Folder:
Last Month
PC:
Folder 1
- File 1
- File 2

NAS:
Folder 1:
- File 1
- File 2

This Month
PC:
Folder 1
- File 2
- File 3

NAS:
Folder 1:
- File 1
- File 2

The problem is, this month when I want to backup all the folders (more than 50 folders & subfolders with new files in each), I select all the folders and copy to the NAS and I expect that Windows will prompt me to ask whether I want to overwrite File 2 which is duplicated between the PC HDD and the NAS, and I expected to click "Do this for all current items" and "Skip" - then I expected that it will copy File 3 to all the respective folders and leave the rest.

But instead, windows prompts me if I want to overwrite the whole Folder 1 - I'm scared of doing this as it may erase File 1, so I click "Do this for all current items" and "Skip" - then windows copies nothing and just exits the copying

How to do this?

Water Pump to Increase Pressure

Recently I installed a water pump in my ceiling to increase the water pressure to all places in the house that's connected to the water pipes coming from the water tank. This was necessary because the pressure from the mains is too low for the water heaters to work properly and the pressure from the tank isn't enough either.

The pump has 2 switches - one switch is a manual switch just to turn on the pump. This is needed because we don't always use the pump, mainly only during showers otherwise we turn it off. The other switch is the built-in automatic switch in the pump. Once it detects that the water pressure is low, it will automatically turn on - then turn off again once the pressure reaches to a certain level. What this means is that when we want to shower, we turn on the pump - it spins for a moment then stops. Then when we turn on any taps, the pump automatically detects the drop in pressure and turns on, so we get nice fast water.

The problem is with the flushes. You see - when the pump is running, the water pressure in the pipes increase and this pressure increase sort of forces the water into the flush tanks even when the float is high up. I tried adjusting the little screw thing and it works but then if I do this, the flush doesn't completely fill up when the pump is off.

Currently the flushes are set to fill up based on the water pressure when the pumps are off and so all the flush tanks in the house overflows everytime someone turns the pump on to take a shower etc. and this is wasting a lot of water.

Are you guys aware of any proper solutions to this problem? Any unique type of flush valve system you know about that can prevent this?

Logistics of Working Out at the Office Gym

Hi folks - I have a gym + shower in my office and I want to make use of it to get fit.

The problem with the gym is that it gets super crowded after office hours and so the best time to make use of it in peace is in the mornings before work or in the afternoons during lunch hour. In my case, I plan to make use of it during the morning before work.

I don't have any experience in doing workouts before work so I don't know how people manage the logistics:
- the sweaty clothes after workout
- the damp towel after shower

Clothes I guess shouldn't be much of a problem if you wear those jersey type materials which don't hold moisture too long, but the problem is the towel. If I just put the towel in a plastic bag an in the car, wouldn't it become smelly by the end of the day?

How do you manage this?

Insane Amount of Fake Accounts on LYN

Today out of boredom, I scrolled down to the list of members who have birthdays today.

It used to be that this section was filled with real members but now it seems like it's filled with hundreds of bot accounts, see below:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Why dont LYN admins run some sort of a script to identify all the long-dormant accounts and delete all of them?

It seems like all these accounts are just sitting idle waiting for the perfect moment to flood the forum with sh*t once their controller triggers an action.

Don't Cancel Train To Singapore

I think that building a High Speed Railway from KL to Singapore is not a good idea because:
- It is expensive to build such a long high-speed-capable track and expensive to maintain
- The high speed trains are expesive to buy and expensive to maintain
- The tickets for high speed KL-Singapore journey will not be able to fight Air Asia / Tiger Air
- The trains will still be slower than flights

Instead, I think that the focus should be on:
- Making it very easy for people who work in Singapore to live in JB
- Eliminating rush hour traffic on the Causeway and Second Link

What Malaysia and Singapore should do is:
- Create a new background check system which will pre-screen people like TSA Pre-Check in the USA
- Pre-screened people will be given a monthly pass that allows them to travel between Singapore and Malaysia without passport and through express customs
- Instead of a high-speed train all the way from KL-Singapore, build a normal speed train from JB to Singapore instead

So instead of spending billions on a precisely built high-speed-capable track, you could build a normal track for a cheaper price.

Instead of spending billions for super expensive high-speed-trains, you could buy the newer version of the Siemens Desiro train (similar to ERL but new version, bigger) or the Siemens Inspiro train (same as MRT train).

Because of the lower initial cost, lower maintenance cost and high volume of people crossing the Causeway every morning and evening, the train line would actually be profitable and would help people.

The track might be less than 50KM long, so even a moderate speed train would make the journey very quickly. At the Singapore end, they need to build the station so that it has an interchange with Singapore's MRT and bus services.

Siemens Desiro 717:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I was looking through the Google Maps of the city if Yiwu in China because I wanted to find the location of this huge building called the "Industrial Production Materials Market" but I wasn't able to find it.

However, while going around Yiwu I found this strange building that looks like the Apple HQ in Cupertino, but there's no Google Street View in China so I can't compare and Baidu maps still have old images of the place so can't see it either.

I wonder what it is...

From Google Maps

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Google Maps URL: https://www.google.com/maps/@29.2337076,119...#33;3m1!1e3

From Baidu Maps

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Don't know how to get the exact location URL for Baidu Maps, search Baidu for 义乌市 and look for the place, compare with Google Maps
Tip: Use the river for reference

Apple's Cupertino HQ

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
