PETALING JAYA: Celebrated actress Datuk Seri Michelle Yeoh and fashion icon Zang Toi are both said to be on the list of honours to be awarded by the King on his birthday.

Yeoh is on the list of people to be awarded the title of Tan Sri this Saturday, June 1.

According to a family member, Hong Kong-based Yeoh is busy working in Paris, but will be returning to Malaysia on Thursday, May 30 to prepare for the ceremony.

Michelle's fianc Jean Todt could also be attending the occasion.

Yeoh, 49 was born in Ipoh, Perak on Aug 6, 1963.

An actress of repute, she made her name as an action star in the Hong Kong film industry, and shot to international fame for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

She is also a former Miss Malaysia, and represented the country at the Miss World pageant in 1983.

Yeoh was awarded the Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Perak (SPMP) which carries the title Datuk Seri from the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah on May 22, 2012.

She was also awarded the Officier de la Lgion d'honneur by then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy on March 14, 2012.

Another Malaysian celebrity, fashion designer Zang Toi, 51, is on the honours list for a datukship.

Toi, who was born and raised in Kelantan, studied at the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York where he is now based.

In 1990, Zang was awarded the Mouton Cadet Young Designer of the Year which recognizes the top young US designer of the year.

He has since dressed many Hollywood actresses such as Sharon Stone, Meg Ryan and Eva Longoria and other celebrities including Melinda Gates.

Bangladeshi Workers To Arrive In June

NEW DELHI, May 27 (Bernama) -- After much delay, workers from Bangladesh are set to arrive in Malaysia in batches starting from the second week of June, according to the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET).

Dhaka Tribune reported that the decision came after Bangladesh's labour wing in Malaysia held a meeting on May 23 with Malaysian government officials.

The report said sending of workers had been delayed because of the recent general election in Malaysia.

A four-member delegation led by the BMET director-general Begum Shamsun Nahar is set to leave Dhaka today to hold a joint technical committee meeting scheduled for May 28 in Malaysia.

"We will discuss technical matters and how to expedite the migration process to Malaysia," said Nahar.

She said Malaysia intended to recruit 30,000 Bangladeshi workers for its plantation sector under the arrangement between the governments of the two countries.

According to BMET officials, only 180 workers had gone to Malaysia to work in the plantation sector.

The Bangladesh government has randomly selected a pool of 10,000 workers from a database that was created through online registration held across the country.

Quoting an unnamed director of BMET, the report said Malaysia-bound workers, who had completed their training, were becoming frustrated due to the long wait and made phone calls to BMET officials to enquire if their visas had been issued.

On the issue, BMET officials said they had already forwarded the information on 6,500 workers to Malaysia.

The government signed an MoU with Malaysia on Nov 26 last year, agreeing to send workers at a low migration cost. A worker now needs Tk33,000 (RM1,236) to go to Malaysia when in the past, private recruiting agencies charged over Tk200,000 (RM7,492) for the same service.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 ― Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil questioned at the High Court here today the need for her to apologise to Malaysians over the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) scandal.

Rafizi Ramli’s lawyer, Ranjit Singh, said the PKR strategy director had in a press statement dated November 28, 2011 called on the former Cabinet minister to apologise to the rakyat as the alleged abuse of public funds in the cattle farming project had roused public anger.

“I have to apologise to Malaysians for what?” said Shahrizat at the High Court here today.

“Do you ask a certain wife to explain what the husband does in a condo? Do you ask a certain wife to explain what a certain husband does in a condo or several condos?” she added, gesturing angrily.

Shahrizat also disagreed with Rafizi’s statement in which he said the question arose of whether public funds were siphoned out after the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) loaned RM81 million to the National Meat Livestock Corporation (NMLC) to purchase two luxury condominium units in Bangsar.

“The question did not arise until your client tried to mislead the whole nation,” said Shahrizat.

“This is defamation and accusations,” she added, gesturing again.Shahrizat also said that she did not know if NFCorp’s RM81 million loan to NMLC came from the RM250 million government loan to the former firm.

The Wanita Umno chief admitted, however, that the use of NFCorp funds to purchase the condominium units was a departure from the purpose of the government loan.

“The money meant for programmes for NFC was stalled because the abattoir was not built, so they invested in property. That’s why it’s a departure from the loan,” explained Shahrizat.

She maintained she was the only target in Rafizi and PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s joint press statement dated November 10, 2011, which had named her along with others such as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Seri Noh Omar, and Deputy Prime Minister and Noh’s ministerial predecessor, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as parties in the NFC issue.

“They were gunning for me... I was the only one (targeted),” said Shahrizat.

The NFC project was awarded to NFCorp ― helmed by Shahrizat’s husband, Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh Ismail ― in 2006 when she had still been in the Cabinet.

Today, Ranjit pointed out that Barisan Nasional’s (BN) backbenchers’ club deputy chief Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin had also urged Shahrizat to resign as women, family and community development minister after the NFC scandal broke.

“Have you sued him? Don’t you feel defamed?” asked Ranjit.

“It’s the very reason for my defamation (suit against Rafizi). As a result of what your client has done, people have thought bad of me. Even those in my own party have these bad thoughts of me,” said Shahrizat.

“Your client asked me to apologise to Malaysians for something I and my family did not do,” she added.

Shahrizat’s senatorship was not renewed last April and her Cabinet portfolio was taken over by Najib.

Shahrizat filed a RM100 million defamation suit against Rafizi and Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin over the NFC issue in January last year.

The hearing before Justice Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera resumes tomorrow.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — A video clip has surfaced on YouTube showing an alleged Biro Tata Negara (BTN) official telling sixth formers of Sekolah Menengah Pandan Indah to get their parents to support Barisan Nasional (BN) and vote out Pakatan Rakyat (PR) from the Selangor government.

The 4½-minute video clip, titled “Anwar Pengkhianat Negara” (Anwar the country’s traitor), was uploaded to the video-sharing site last December 9 and publicised yesterday by blogger Anak Sungai Derhaka and PAS news portal Harakahdaily.

Both identified the man as presumably from BTN, a government agency. There was no independent confirmation about the man’s identity although Education Ministry rules dictate that politicians are not allowed to conduct activities in schools.

In the video, the official addressed the audience as students from Sekolah Menengah Pandan Indah and later referred to them as Sixth Form students.

Speaking in Bahasa Malaysia, he thanked the audience who had invited him to speak on the topic “Anwar Pengkhianat Negara”, which was met with scattered applause and sniggers, including a snide comment “he says he was invited”.

The man, dressed in what is known as a F1 shirt popular with federal government agencies, told the students that Selangor used to have only 1,500 licensed and unlicensed entertainment joints and bars under BN rule but it has ballooned to 5,000 under PR.

“This shows that the government is not Islamic and has lied to the people. I hope the schoolchildren will tell their parents that the PR government has lied to the people of Selangor,” he said, to applause of the audience.

He also told them to tell their parents to go to local government offices and demand they close all the entertainment and gambling joints in the country’s wealthiest state.

“You Sixth Formers must be with Barisan Nasional, convince your parents to be with Barisan Nasional to oppose Pakatan Rakyat,” said the official to calls of “takbir”.

The latest video clip comes a week after another clip showed a hall full of undergraduates attending a forum led by a non-governmental organisation called Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia (SW1M), seen aligned to BN.

In that clip, SW1M president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin was seen berating Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate KS Bawani for questioning her presentation about anti-government elements.

SW1M has hit out at critics over the video clip while Sharifah Zohra has blamed the opposition for making an issue of the event.

Malaysia now allows local university students above 21 to take part in political activities after restrictions were placed in the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971.

The minimum age for eligible voters is 21 in Malaysia. Some 25 per cent or 3.3 million of the 13 million eligible voters will cast their ballots for the first time in Election 2013.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak hinted this week that he will dissolve Parliament soon and call for a general election before BN’s mandate expires on April 28.

BN now holds 136 of the 222 seats in Parliament and nine out of 13 states in Malaysia after PR made historic gains in Election 2008.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak will call elections after Chinese New Year next year to allow the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) to use the celebrations to court votes from the Chinese community, predicts Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali.

The federal coalition lost most of the Chinese votes in Election 2008 with its mainly Chinese parties — the MCA and Gerakan — losing many federal and state seats.

Perkasa, whose members are mostly from Umno, has been seen to exacerbate the situation by asserting Malay rights and supremacy by asking for more business opportunities and even insulting the Chinese by giving them money in white packets at the last Chinese New Year celebrations. White money packets are usually used for Chinese funerals.

“Now, Datuk Najib’s government is really focusing on winning the Chinese community’s votes, and of course the Chinese New Year celebrations can be used with various programmes such as open house and so on, so in February.

“I hold on to my view, my prediction that elections will be held after Chinese New Year in 2013,” Ibrahim, president of the Malay right-wing group, told The Malaysian Insider in an interview.

He also said the prime minister does not have to rush to call for elections in November as he has to focus on Budget 2013, which will be tabled on September 28.

“This Budget, he wants to table not only what is good because elections are coming, but he also wants to see after he tables it, whether there is time for the rakyat to feel that the Budget is truly good,” added the independent MP for Pasir Mas in Kelantan.

He said it was not logical for elections to be held in November because Muslim voters would have just returned from their Haj pilgrimage.

He also pointed out that November is the exam month for students and the monsoon season.

“I hear the SPR (Election Commission) has administrative duties that are not yet settled, need more time,” he said.

The Malaysian Insider has previously reported that BN was looking at November polls which is within 60 days of Budget 2013 being tabled, shortly after Najib pointed out the coincidences of events based on multiples of 11, his favourite number.

Ibrahim said that PKR was in a hurry for elections to be held because its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim could not wait to be the prime minister.

The diminutive politician was close to Anwar during their undergraduate days in the 1970s. He was also involved in major political events such as the Kelantan emergency in 1978, Umno’s split and the setting up of splinter party Parti Melayu Semangat 46 in the 1990 elections, and Anwar’s sacking from the Cabinet and Umno in 1998.

He was also detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1974 for being actively involved in an undergraduate movement while leading the Kesatuan Siswa Institut Teknologi Mara (KSITM), staying in the Kamunting detention camp for two years with Anwar, who now leads the opposition pact Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Now firmly opposed to the PKR chief, Ibrahim said: “I don’t see it at all (Anwar becoming PM), because he and us cannot overcome the will of God.”

“But because he almost became the PM once when he was Dr Mahathir’s deputy, it did not happen and he was fired and all sorts of things happen, to me, if according to logic, his chance is already gone.

“He was removed last time because of Allah’s will where PM’s position was very near for him, but then he fell,” said Ibrahim, who won Pasir Mas on a PAS ticket in 2008 but later declared himself an independent and head of the Perkasa group.

Perkasa has been actively fighting for the rights of the Malays and frequently criticises PR component parties PKR, PAS and the DAP for allegedly trying to threaten the interests of the Malays and Bumiputeras, which are already guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.

Perkasa’s presence has caused unease with those from PR which considers the organisation to be racist while disregarding Malaysia’s multi-ethnic nature.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Have you been receiving spam emails lately related to the plight of Indian Malaysians and the lack of attention from Pakatan Rakyat (PR)? How about Malaysia’s rise in the world competitive index by Swiss global business school IMD?

These emails appear to be from Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters who have been increasing their online activity in a battle with PR for voters’ hearts and minds.

The Malaysian Insider has received a number of spam emails written by BN supporters eager to stake a claim in cyberspace, as intense speculation over the date of the next general election continues.

Most of the spam emails touch on the Indian community, featuring titles such as “Malaysian Indian Welfare Association holds protest against Selangor government” and “Betrayal and opportunism: the tales of the 3 newest Indian champions”.

“Now that it is apparent that the Indians are fed-up with them and are choosing to once again place their faith in Najib Razak’s BN, the wounded Pakatan has launched a series of targeted attacks,” claims an email titled “Desperate to regain Indian support, Pakatan starts lying about BN.”

The email accused PR of belittling “the concrete efforts taken by the Najib administration, they (PR) also spread malicious and dangerous lies.”

It also listed the “concrete efforts” by the government to address the documentation and education woes of the Indian community, including the granting of scholarships and financial aid to Tamil schools.

The number of Indian voters satisfied with the prime minister’s leadership dropped from 80 per cent in February to 72 per cent in May, according to a recent survey by independent pollsters Merdeka Center.

Another email, “Citizenship for Bangladeshi votes — another made-up cyber war production” alleged that PR cybertroopers had hacked into Bangladesh’s NGO Affairs Bureau on the Prime Minister’s Office website.

It claimed that false information was then been placed on the website, where it was stated that Bangladesh nationals were given Malaysian citizenship if they vote for BN.

“Ultimately, is there any proof that Bangladeshi workers holding Malaysian ICs were permitted to cast their votes for BN in any election given that they have been around in Malaysia for the past few elections?” the author wrote.

The issue arose last September, prompting Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to deny the claims then.

Sources told The Malaysian Insider that BN strategists are offering money for supporters to start BN-friendly blogs even though blogging has been supplanted by Facebook and Twitter as the main source influence and news dissemination.

There has also been an increase in BN cybertroopers’ activity on micro-blogging service Twitter, sniping at PR leaders and activists.

Last Wednesday, Datuk Seri Rais Yatim said that he expects 10,000 pro-BN Twitter accounts to sprout up and spread information, The Malay Mail reported.

“If people keep tweeting that ‘Bersih is bersih’, people will believe that the movement is genuine. Tweet back and start saying that Bersih is ‘kotor’ (dirty),” the information, communications and culture minister was quoted as saying by the English daily.

Last week, the Penang Barisan National chief Teng Chang Yeow was reported by The Malay Mail as saying that the coalition there will prepare 40 “cyber troopers and ground soldiers” in anticipation of polls.

Bernama reported last month that the Sabah BN Youth will hold a three-day cyber troopers workshop for 85 youth members, where they would be taught the skills and legal limits of cyber warfare.

Last November, Najib voiced his unconditional support for pro-BN bloggers and social media users, christening them the ruling coalition’s “new army”.

He pointed out that the online world was the new battlefront between BN and PR, and said pro-government bloggers need to combat the opposition’s “lies and half-truths” on the Internet.

PETALING JAYA, May 11 — Tun Mohammad Hanif Omar must step down as head of Putrajaya’s independent panel probe on the Bersih 3.0 violence, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said last night.

The PKR de facto leader said this was necessary to ensure the panel was completely fair and neutral in its investigations into incidents surrounding the April 28 rally.

Former Inspector-General of Police Hanif was delusional in thinking Bersih 3.0 would bring a resurgence of communist threat, said Anwar (picture).

“Tun Hanif still thinks he is the Inspector-General of Police fighting the communists, need to fight Chin Peng to the end... eh it (the communist threat) is already over,” Anwar said at a Pakatan Rakyat (PR) ceramah attended by over 1,000 supporters.

“I am asking that Tun Hanif withdraw as chairman. Do not fool the people. You know you are not neutral, insulting Bersih... the other panel members should also step down,” Anwar demanded.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang echoed Anwar’s remarks, saying that Hanif’s appointment was the “worst” decision the Najib administration had made in three years.

“Tun Hanif should be a star witness in the enquiry, not the chairman… save the enquiry from embarrassment,” the Ipoh Timor MP said to loud cheers from people at the ceramah.

“Tun Hanif says Bersih 3.0 was a plot to overthrow the present government... where is the proof?

“Rational Malaysians won’t accept this explanation... that there were pro-communist elements during the rally,” said Lim.

The DAP has maintained Putrajaya’s independent panel probe on the Bersih 3.0 violence would return biased findings following Hanif’s appointment as its head.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had said that Hanif had already made clear his opposition to Bersih and his former position as IGP would serve as a conflict of interest when the panel probes allegations of police brutality.

As such, he said, it was a “forgone conclusion” that the panel would absolve all police personnel from blame over the violent incidents during Bersih 3.0 last month.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein announced the names of the six-man panel tasked to investigate allegations of police violence against Bersih 3.0 protesters on April 28.

Apart from Hanif, the other panel members include former Chief Judge of Borneo Tan Sri Steve Shim, Sinar Harian managing director Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub, Media Chinese International legal adviser Liew Peng Chuan, Petronas corporate affairs senior general manager Datuk Medan Abdullah and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia psychology Professor Dr Ruszmi Ismail.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had pledged last week that “credible, experienced and respectable” individuals would form the independent panel to probe the violence during Bersih 3.0.

Najib said that he along with the entire government and members of the public are keeping a close eye on investigations into the allegations that journalists, both local and foreign, had been roughed up during the rally for free and fair elections.

But Najib has come under fire for his administration’s selection of Hanif to head the panel, even after the latter had agreed with the prime minister’s claim that Bersih 3.0 was an attempt to overthrow the government and even claimed that communist sympathisers were involved in the event.

Chaos reigned on the streets of Kuala Lumpur for over four hours after 3pm on April 28 when police fired tear gas and water cannons and chased protesters down the streets to disperse what had initially begun as a peaceful protest calling for free and fair elections.

The Bar Council has said that its observers found that police brutality at the rally was “magnified” compared to already chaotic scenes during a similar gathering for free and fair elections last July 9.

Six local pressmen and 12 photographers and journalists from the foreign media were reportedly assaulted during the fracas on April 28.

Both local and foreign media groups have condemned the hard-handed tactics used on the media, whom they pointed out were merely doing their job.

Police had begun firing the tear gas and water cannons after some demonstrators breached the barricade in front of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and rushed into Dataran Merdeka, which the court had barred the public from entering that particular weekend.

They fired as far as the DBKL premises, which are across Jalan Parlimen, and the move broke up the crowd who fled helter-skelter but police chased them down at Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja Laut.
