Ikonik Vulcan 1kW Dissection and preliminary testi

Hi Guys,

Managed to lay my hands on one of these power supply gems, many thanks to Eric from Ikonik. Took me a while to get ready the components to test the power supply with a core i7 extreme rig. I did some dissection and took it for a spin, but am currently hampered by the stock cooler which is the only core i7 friendly cooler that I have. will be heading down to SLS this weekend to hoot a core i7 cooler, and thus will present more information. For now, a short writeup.

The Ikonik Vulcan 1kW is based on the Channelwell PUC series of 80plus certified power supplies, with the company's own customization to the aesthetics. At a SRP of S$359, it's definitely one of the more reasonably priced 1kW PSU in the local market now. Some pictures first before i continue.

The box itself

features listed on the box

the ratings

nicely bundled modular cables

Modularity, with a switch for you to switch the LED lights. LED lights sits on a different circuitry.

now you see the lights..

now you don't.

The lid popped. first time I'm seeing solid capacitors in a SMPS. the bigger caps are manufactured by Japan Chemicon.

I originally intended to put the setup thru some nice clocking to test the limits of the power supply via a power meter, but apparently, the stock heatsink couldn't really do much. I should be heading down to SLS this couple of days to grab a third party heatsink, either a Scythe Mugen 2 or a TRUE black to complement this setup, hopefully I'll be able to do more then. The setup as follows:

Core i7 965 Extreme
Intel X58SO
Aeneon DDR3 1600Mhz 2GBx4 (it still runs in triple channel btw)
Asus/Powercolor 4870 X2 Crossfire
WD 300GB SATA
Ikonik 1kW

The setup itself

What i ran to put the GPU and graphics at load. I was running 4x Orthos Blend and Rthdribl at 1920x1200, 16xFSAA. After I get my heatsink, I should be doing some tests with Furmark as well. Below are my preliminary results.

http://www.slsing.com/evan/iko/IMG_0356.jpg

The amount of power the stock configuration draws. assuming 80-83% efficiency, the setup should be drawing just slightly below 650watts.

http://www.slsing.com/evan/iko/IMG_0366.jpg

Currently, the best I could do is 1.325v at 3.5Ghz on the stock heatsink, and I'm already hitting temps of past 100degrees in a 23degree airconditioned environment. zzz. The two graphic cards are running at 790mhz for core and 950mhz for memory. Cards are from two different manufacturers with cores dated one month apart in date, so overclockability is kind of limited here. Assuming 80-83% efficiency, The setup got bumped up by about 50watts in terms of power consumption, with an estimated PC of 700watts.

Ok guys, that's all for now, will continue with this thread this weekend.

Mini-ITX Premium Cases!

We did a short article on mini-ITX premium cases here, with Abee's latest R10 and Soldam's MC3 as the highlights. Definitely looks good with solid material and features, but expect to pay slightly more than RM1,400 for each of them incl shipping. =)

Overclocking Competition in Singapore, July 2007

**MODS, please remove this if you guys think this is appropriate. Not trying to spam of sorts. THanks**

Hey guys,

VR-Zone will be having a regional overclocking competition on the 7th of July, and we will like to seek a team of overclockers to come down to participate in the competition. Accomodation will be provided for one night if anyone is interested. Currently, there are competitors from Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, and I sure do hope that there will be at least one guy from lowyat can come down and represent the country/forum!

Prizes will be fantastic, with Quad Core processors, Asus Mainboards, Prize money and more!

PS: I will be able to sponsor one hotel room, up to a maximum of 3 pax.
