"This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks, for our national security and our economy, both now and indeed in the long run," he said.

Because the US sanctions only affect future equipment, the government has been advised there is no security justification for removing 2G, 3G and 4G equipment supplied by Huawei.

PETALING JAYA: There will be no more social distancing measures on Rapid KL trains and stations come June 10 in line with the recovery movement control order (MCO), says Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.

Its chief operating officer Abdul Hadi Amran said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) by the Transport Ministry allowed a 100% capacity of passengers on all rail services, except ETS and KTM Intercity.

"Starting June 10 under the recovery MCO, the LRT Kelana Jaya line, LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling, MRT Sungai Buloh - Kajang line and Monorail line, which are managed by Rapid KL, will end the social distancing rules onboard the trains.

"Social distancing markers in the trains and stations have already been removed," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 9).

Rapid Rail is expected to be able to increase the number of passengers back to 750,000 daily, as compared to 200,000 daily under the conditional MCO.

However, safety and health procedures such as body temperature checks on staff and passengers, compulsory wearing of face masks and usage of hand sanitiser will continue to be in place, said Abdul Hadi.

Cashless transactions such as monthly passes or Touch N Go are encouraged, said Abdul Hadi, adding that passengers are also encouraged to download the MySejahtera app.

"Disinfection and cleaning activities at stations and trains will continue to be done frequently.

"We thank our passengers and together, let us practice this new normal in our lives to go through the Covid-19 recovery period safely and successfully," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 21): Genting Malaysia Bhd is believed to have announced to its employees that the casino group needs to undertake an unprecedented sizable retrenchment exercise, according to sources.

"They are retrenching about 10% to 20% of their staff force that stands at about 20,000," said a source.

At the time of writing, Genting Malaysia had yet to respond to query by theedgemarkets.com on the matter.

The group's latest annual report stated that Genting Malaysia has a total workforce of 20,000 worldwide.

The casino operator, which has weathered several severe economic down cycles in the past five decades, did not have a lucky escape from the global outbreak of Covid-19 that has resulted in the shutdown of all its casinos.

The closure has lasted for more than two months. This is expected to take a heavy toll on Genting Malaysia.

"Having a major cost-cutting exercise at the Genting group is inevitable today given all that has happened. Salaries make up a large chuck of its costs," said a gaming analyst.

The group is expected to release its March quarterly results by this week.

Genting Malaysia's stock closed unchanged today at RM2.36 that is at a price-earnings ratio of 9.59 times. This brings its market capitalisation at RM14.01 billion. Year-to-date, the counter has shed 25.8% from RM3.18.

Its parent company Genting Bhd closed one sen higher at RM4.08, valuing the counter at RM15.82 billion. Its share price has had a bigger fall of about 31% from RM5.91.

Covid-19: Govt mulls action against parents who bring children to public areas

PUTRAJAYA: The government may consider prohibiting children in public places, following the rise in Covid-19 cases involving children.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the matter would be discussed in the National Security Council meeting tomorrow.

"We are now using a soft approach in advising parents against bringing their children, who are in the high-risk group, when going out in public, like to supermarkets and hospitals.

"We are now looking into action against parents who bring their children to public places and hospitals without appointments," he told a press conference on Monday.

If a soft approach fails, he said the authorities had no choice but to resort to harsher measures.

TSMC halts new Huawei orders after US tightens restrictions

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world biggest contract chipmaker, has halted new orders from Huawei Technologies in response to tighter U.S. export controls aimed at further limiting the Chinese company's access to crucial chip supplies, multiple sources told the Nikkei Asian Review.

"TSMC has stopped taking new orders from Huawei after the new rule change was announced to fully comply with the latest export control regulation," a person familiar with the situation said. "But those already in production and those orders which TSMC took before the new ban are not impacted and could continue to proceed if those chips could be shipped before mid-September."

The U.S. Commerce Department announced on Friday that all non-U. S. chip manufacturers using American chipmaking equipment, intellectual property or design software will have to apply for a license before shipping chips to Huawei.

"It's a difficult decision for TSMC as Huawei is the company's No. 2 customer, but the chipmaker has to follow the U.S. rules," another person familiar with the matter said.

Huawei, the world's biggest telecom equipment maker and second biggest smartphone maker, relies heavily on TSMC to manufacture its advanced chip designs -- including all of the mobile processors used in Huawei's flagship smartphones. The Taiwanese company, which also produces artificial intelligence processors and networking chips for Huawei.

MAS: Air fares may rise by more than 50%

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian carriers warn that passengers will likely have to pay over 50 per cent more for air fares if social distancing is imposed on board aircraft in light of Covid-19.

Malaysian Airlines Bhd and Malindo Air concurred with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that the proposal to require social distancing among passengers would spike air fares by up to 54 per cent.

Malaysia Airlines said this was seen in Thailand after its government regulated empty seating between passengers, raising domestic fares by over 50 per cent.

"We will continue to drive dynamic pricing depending on capacity and demand. Promotions will surely be ascertained periodically as and when feasible. We expect customers to have more concern on safety and security," a Malaysia Airlines spokesperson told the New Straits Times (NST) recently.

Malindo Air said its fares would likely increase by about 50 per cent, depending on selected routes and capacity demand.

Malindo Air chief executive officer Captain Mushafiz Mustafa Bakri said the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the airline industry might compress players' margins by about 50 per cent.

Mushafiz said competition between airlines would be more intense as demand gradually increases but with less seats available in the local market.

"This will affect our fares as we need to cover revenue losses and higher opex due to the sanitation process and social distancing on aircraft to ensure the safety of both passengers and crew," he told the NST.
