[REVIEW] - Monster Turbines In-Ear

With that in mind, Monster, a renowned brand for its high-end audio and video equipment, came out with Monster Turbines. This is probably Monster's first foray into the in-ear monitor industry, and, if I might say, it has successfully made a splash. For those unfamiliar with the brand, here's some information:

Monster Cable Products, Inc. was founded in 1979 by Noel Lee, who was then a laser-fusion design engineer at Lawrence-Livermore Laboratory, as well as an audiophile and professional drummer. Lee discovered that wires of different constructions produced varying degrees of audio performance when hooked up to loudspeakers. From this discovery, he developed a high performance speaker cable, named it Monster Cable, and literally created an industry. The invention of Monster Cable created a new product category that revolutionized the audio market. Prior to Monster Cable, most stereo systems were wired with ordinary "zip-cord," the same cable used for electrical household and lamp wire. Their inferior construction and cheap materials restricts power, dynamic range and clarity in the lows, mids, and highs.

Lee chose the name "Monster" because it sounded strong and powerful. It became an immediate hit with consumers. First off, here's my background in audio equipment:
I started with a pair of Creative EP-630, which blew my mind away when I first listened to it. And that prompted my upgraditis. I now currently use a pair of Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 pro, Koss KSC75 for portable use, a pair of Denon D2000 for home use. That said, let's get into my impression of this pair of babies!

Accessories and Packaging:

I love the way they pack those babies! I've been burning through different pairs of headphones and IEMs (sub $100 - $200 pairs) and not many of them put time into actually packaging their product! While some might call this marketing gimmick, I call this "consumer sensitivity." Consumers don't simply spend $100 for just an earphone and a box. Admittedly, some might find those accessories unnecessary to fully enjoy music, I think a company, or any business for that matter, should put some thought into protecting the product they're selling.

Monster Turbines come with a beautiful box that opens up to reveal the IEM, and a leather pouch that looks like it costs more than the IEMs themselves! You get 5 pairs of silicon tips (3 different sizes for standard bi-flange and 2 different sizes for tri-flange) Personally I settled for the bigger of the 2 tri-flanges as I find that it seals better and sits better in my ears. As comfortable as they are while I'm sitting in my room, I simply can't get them to sit still when I'm working out in the gym. The replacement Turbines I received few days ago came with a pair of earguides that seem to be really well-made, but putting the Turbines are so much harder with the ear guides. Arguably, the ear guides would help to keep the Turbines in place, however, I've taken them for an actual test in the gym, and they still don't sit still.

I believe many will argue that packaging is not something that should be taken into account when reviewing an IEM, or any headphones, but I feel that the Monster Turbines deserve my nod in this respect simply because they've outdone numerous competitions.

Sound:

*Edit: After listening for over 50 hours, I am hearing significant improvement over the stock earphones. Soundstage has significantly expanded, and it feels like you're sitting in the middle of an orchestra band listening to everything around you. When I first got them, music sounded very much in-your-face, similar to Grado's sound signature. Bass, however, remains relatively the same, with some loose ends every now and then, which smears over to the mids. The mids are really starting to shine right now, along with the treble.

Even though I mentioned that the bass is pretty loose at times, it still is, undoubtedly, Turbines' strong point. However, note that the quantity is emphasized just a tad more over quality.*

When I first received them, I was skeptical with the sound quality because I've heard from some head-fiers (as well as un-impressed reviewers) that the bass is overbloated, the treble is too bright, the mids are recessed etc. I have to admit that I bought into all that negativity even prior to putting them into my ears! Needless to say, I felt cheated and wanted to send them in right away to get my money back.

However, occasionally, just occasionally, I heard some sparkles in them. And I told myself, "hmm.. Maybe there's something in them that's waiting to be revealed.."

That said, I took the babies off my ears, put them on some burning-in time for about..20-ish hours and prayed for some miracle to happen. Will there be a miracle, though?

After the burn-in time, I meticulously picked up the IEMs, and I put them on.

The sound just blew me away.

The bass is tighter, the mids are clearer.. I am hearing nuances in my music, and I love the way they sound! The burn-in time proved to be the missing link here, and right now in my ears I am hearing as if a different set of IEMs.

Compared to my UE 10 pro, both sound really warm and fun. (note that I'm not a specialist in audio jargons) I love the way that the Turbines let me enjoy the music I really love, which consist mostly of R&B, Pop, Instrumental and Rock. I figured that Monster probably tweaked the Turbines to fit the younger generation of music lovers who bask in pop, techno and similar genres of music. For one, the bass is definitely more prominent, which is what most youngsters consider as "good" earphones. Neutrality might be the holy grail of most audio purists, but for us younger generation, it's all that bass that matters. And in that respect, Turbines has scored a solid 9/10 in my book.

Macbook pro -> Monster Turbines (home)

Songs:

Marry Me - Train
A great, great song that I'm infatuated with at this moment. The vocals are great and it's simply a beautiful song that serves to lift spirits and provide hope for those who have not found their significant other. I think the Turbines worked its magic well with this song. Instrument separation is excellent, and the vocals are uncolored, somewhat neutral sounding. For my copy, I can even hear Pat Monahan breathe before he goes, "Marry me... Today and everyday.. Marry me.."

If I were to choose one song that tipped the Turbines in its favor, it's this one. Totally convinced me of its worth.

Sing For The Moment - Eminem
This is one of my favorites all time, and I've tried numerous headphones/earphones/earbuds with this song, which explains my particular familiarity with the nuances in the song. The intro starts off good, with clear treble that really sparkles. Eminem then kicks in, and the bass starts to take over the entire spectrum. While I love the way that the Turbines emphasize the lower end of this song (personal preference), the bass does reveal a little looseness. In other words, I would describe the bass as "drowning" the rest. Does this mean "overbloated" bass? I guess so, but still I really like the overall fun-ness that the Turbines bring to this song.

Build Quality:
The Turbines are quite solidly built as a matter of fact. Even the creator, Noel Lee, places his pride in coming out with "tangle-free" cables. (Well, technically the cables are not "tangle-free", but they ARE less prone to cable entanglement issues) Some people feel that the Turbines are slightly heavy due to their metal construction, but I beg to differ. The metallic construction not only gives the Turbines an exclusive and dignified look, it also lends a sense of better, long-lasting built to them.

I've been traveling on a consistent basis (3-5 times per month) and I have not felt them pulling my ears down whatsoever. I can sleep with them on, and they're perfectly comfortable.

Warranty and Post-Sales Service:

Again, I don't think that warranty and post-sales service should be any consideration in reviewing an IEM, (therefore it doesn't affect my rating of the IEM itself in any way) but I just need to mention the 5-star warranty service they offer.
With your purchase, Monster is so sure of their goods that they're offering a 3-year limited warranty. If, by any chance, your IEM breaks down or takes a dip in the pool, give Monster a call to arrange for a replacement. I am personally unaware of how many exchanges you get, but I've only done it once (after using the Turbines daily for close to 5 months). It should be noted that I'm a person who works his gears really hard, I travel a lot, move around a lot, jump, climb, crawl and sprint around a lot, so the Turbines are subjected to rougher conditions that it would've been otherwise. Nevertheless, the Monster rep, (i think her name was Alice, such a sweet soul) took my name and issued a return authorization number right away. No hassle, no worries. That's quality service right there.

As such, I am very impressed with their service, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase, knowing that I will be able to get at least some help if anything goes wrong.

For those who are considering this pair, it's not the best in its price range for sure. But if you're thinking of getting a good bang-for-the-buck, with a sprinkle of musicality and fun, I think you won't go wrong with the Turbines.

*P.S: There are numerous fake products in the market right now, and the Turbines Fakes are probably one of the most, if not the most, prolific mass-produced fake IEMS in the market. If you do decide to purchase the Turbines, please get it from authorized dealers. Here's a list of authorized dealers (certainly not exhaustive):

I'm wondering about where should an ad be placed to generate most revenue, the pricing for the placement of ads, and how to place ads on blogs..

I'm personally using Blogger..

Does the ad depend on the template you use? Or is there an HTML code that can be used to place the ad there?

I tried to place a flash banner on my blog, but it didn't turn out to be a flash..Just a solid banner laying on my blog, which was later taken down as it was an eyesore..

I know these two don't come together as a comparison but I really want to know~

I'm a student and i want good value for money..

My needs:

Good graphics for engineering designs.
Decent memory and processor.
I listen to songs and movies online, so about 250 - 320gb HDD is enough for me..
Good battery life--I don't want to run around campus looking for ports to charge..Even though ports are everywhere..
Not too heavy so that I can bring to school..

This Toshiba is on sale now for about 2700rm...I don't know whether it suits me..Seems like battery life is very short..What do you guys think? Is it a good laptop?

The economy's so bad right now that everyone's having a tight pocket and cash flow seems to be stunted for some time now isn't it? That's the case for me at least.

So here I have something to propose to you all...I created a blog to find out how and what will earn you some stable residual income online..

BUT, I don't look at ponzi scams..Many people confuse and misinterpret some good online opportunities with ponzi schemes, piramids and so on. Well, opportunity only comes to those who are prepared. I don't know about you guys, but I sure don't want to miss out on my money. It's either I take it or I lose it; there's no 2nd chance when it comes to opportunities. Agree?

If you do, then read on.....

There are now about few methods of making money that I'm aware of, and that many youngsters like myself are doing.

1) PTC - Paid To Click. Sites such as Neobux and SvBux are paid by companies to advertise, so when you join these sites, by viewing the ads for a mere 5 minutes or so, Neobux split the profit with you, and you EARN $$$$!

2)MultiLevelMarxxting - This is a supposedly illegal way of marketing on LYN. Or at least you're not allowed to promote that. I'm NOT promoting, in this case, I'm just discussing it.

3) Investment - There are numerous, numerous sites online that are available for you to invest. One such is GeniusFunds. This site is legitimate, and it's a registered company. Many claim that it's HYIP, ponzi, pyramid etc. etc. That's just heresy. They've been online for over a year now, and they've been making great payouts as well.

You see, these sites can be a great way for you to make money, IF you know how to play your cards right. There's a risk involved in every game you play, investments included.

Say you invest in a real estate, there's no guarantee that it'll make profit, but you have to make the 1st step to even endear yourself to the Goddess of Luck.

We should strive to discuss about how to make money online on this forum, or you can post messages on blogs or something to make yourself heard. I started my blog to reach out to people, and I've learned from many mistakes in the past, and now I'm making a relatively good income for myself through investment sites..

Hi guys!! Need help again!! Upgraditis!!!

I just recently purchased my HD 555, and I think I've used less than 100 hours..Now I'm thinking of trying something new without spending too much! BUT, I don't want to spend money on a cheaper 1, and then regret didn't save up to purchase a new 1.

Now, I've got 3 choices!

1) Go for $50 Sr60 used with new HD 414 pads
2) Go for $55 Sr80 used
3) go for $120 SR225 used..

which to go??

I listen to rock, pop, classical and punk rock most of the time...Mainly playing from computer, and Creative ZEN VISION M..

Nowadays there are many financial operators called "Payment Processors" that deal with transferring from, and to, your bank and a virtual account. One such example is the famous PayPal.

However, nowadays there are many payment processors about in the Internet that claim to have similar functions, with added security and goodies..I'm sceptical about this, and I here put forth to the discussion of which payment processor is the best?

Hey guys, i'm interested in starting something like a math club here, where everyone interested in math can post their inquiries and answers.

Don't be shy, because we're all humans. We need to ask, if we want to know more about something..

Here's my 1st question:
It's about First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

The theorem states that the differential of an integral, f(x) is g(x). F(x) = f prime of (x).

Does it matter how you prove it? Because my lecturer, who's an a+*hole told me if the function can be integrated, we MUST integrate it. I don't know how to type the question out..does anyone know any software so that I can type out the question?

Hi guys, it's me killz23!

Yesterday I tried plugging in my Fiio E5 amp to my SE P1i..and connected to Sennheiser HD 212 pro...

OMG! I was stunned at the sound quality..It was the BEST, handsdown, sound quality I've ever heard.. The separation, soundstage, clarity....Bass especially..
Note: Don't use Megabass though, because it's gona make the whole experience muddy and f*&k3d up..so no dont use it...

Rig:

Sony Ericsson P1i, modded with Walkman 3.0 and Sound Mod from dongxanh.

Amp: Fiio E5 with flat mode on

Headphone: Sennheiser HD 212 pro

End result: Audio Nirvana

anyone tried this combo before??PLease join this thread!!!

P.S: It's not Flat mode on my FIio e5..oddly enough, I didn't use either of the 2 modes..I pushed the button slightly to the right, but stopped halfway.The produced the best sound..If i pushed it to either side, it's gona sound pretty bad again...weird
