Which Linux Distro Fits Best For This Task?

Hi !

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to enlist hard drive donation here ( although I'm the one responsible for the post at http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/628134 )

This message is related to the message above ... Currently, the Linux distro that we install on the PCs that we rehabilitated is the old Red Hat 5.2

I know it's kinda old, .... no _really_ ancient ! But that's the one we have been using since day numero uno.

So, can anyone please tell me which distro best suited for this task?

Thank you !

Old Hard Drive Wanted !

For Penang Area,

If you recently bought a new hard drive to upgrade your PCs, and dunno what to do with your (still working) old hard drive, please read further.

I, along with several other people, are running an ad-hoc computer re-habilitation program. What we do is collect the old computers that people throw away, rehabilitate them, and then give those rehabilitated PCs to the various non-profit / non-governmental organizations throughout the state of Penang, and sometimes, we also give the PCs to not-so-rich families with kids who need computer for their schoolwork.

So far, we have given away about 50 PCs, but we still have about 30 PCs waiting to be given away, only if we have the Hard Drives for them.

The vast majority of the old PCs people throw away are still in working condition. Even those which are not, there are parts that are still usable. That is why if those old PCs are given to the "recycling centers", it would be a total waste !

Instead of having those old PCs crushed, smashed, and so on, we decided that it would be better if we can rehabilitate these computers and give them to people who have a true need.

Our operation is totally non-profit oriented.

We do need old hard drives. If you have old hard drives, sizes ranging from 20GB to 80GB that you don't need anymore, would you kindly consider giving them to us?

What we do with the old hard drives is simple - we check them for stability (don't want old hard drives with too many bad sectors), and then we re-format them, and install Linux on them.

Most of the old PCs we rehabilitate are Pentium III generation PCs, and the BIOS of those PCs can "read" up to 100GB of hard disk. That is why we are looking for hard drives ranging from 20GB to 80GB.

Of course, if you have hard drives with a larger capacity that you want to give us, we will take them too. We will try to fit them on computers that can "read" them.

Currently our main source of old PCs is from the Holy Spirit Cathedral of Penang. I must also thank the congregations of the Holy Spirit Cathedral of Penang for their generosity in giving us their unwanted old PCs.

Please email us if you want to contact us. Our email address is:
pg at catholic dot org

Thank you all for reading !
