It would be good to see what's the #1 local mag title Lowyat forummers actually spend their hard earned cash on. Vote only for the favourite Malaysian title you spend money on. Browsing thru at the newsstand or reading copies left at the office, airport lounge, etc. doesn't count!

Japan-Only Bose Speakers!

I suppose that all audiophiles just have to declare Bose as 'junk' but here's something a lot of people don't know.

In Japan Bose is considered higher up the food chain than it is in Malaysia and US/Europe. The finishing on the 901s, 301s, etc. are better. Some sort of British automotive dashboard veneer type material. To top it off the speaker stands are better built, and have a high gloss finish.

There are speakers never even seen in Malaysia, and apparently are built in the United States for demanding Japanese buyers. The 464 WestBorough, which is positioned between the 901s and Japanese 301v (their version of the 301 Series V Direct/Reflects). There's also what is apparently a small Bose equivalent of the BBC LS3/5A called the 125 WestBorough!

Prices in Japan
901 WestBorough - JPY462,000
464 WestBourough - JPY197,400
301v WestBorough - JPY63,000
125 WestBorough - JPY52,290

http://www.bose.co.jp/jp_jp?url=/consumer_...rough/464wb.jsp
http://www.bose.co.jp/jp_jp?url=/consumer_...g/301v/301v.jsp

I wonder if Atlas HiFi can bring in the 464 WestBoroughs?

I was browsing around for an integrated amp, and noticed two reviews. One was a Music Hall Mambo integrated 50W Class A amp. Check out the review http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/mambo2/mambo2.html and take a good look at the rear panel, and then compare with the Shanling SLM-A40 here - http://www.china-highend-hifi.com/prod011234124241.htm

Hmmm!

PS3 as audio source?

After much deliberation on different CD and DVD players as sources, I've been considering using a PS3 as a HiFi audio source. Is it possible to have 2 channel out via RCA plugs into my vacuum tube amp (RCA inputs), in turn driving a pair of Bose 301 Series V speakers?

2-channel audio is fine with me and I have no intention of upgrading to a different amp and/or speakers. These have to remain constant.

Any ideas or insight into this? I know nothing about PS3.

What CD Player to buy?

I need a CD player to feed through a 14-Watt per channel integrated all-tube amp, into a pair of Bose 301 speakers on generic stands. Have been looking at the Marantz 7001, 7001KI, SA8003, CD5003, Pioneer PD-D6, NAD C542. Am leaning more towards Marantz now.

Any ideas or suggestions?

RacingSparrow - R/C scratchbuilt yacht

Ever wanted to build your own yacht from plans, the way model airplane guys do, out of balsa wood, etc.? Now you can do it with this book by Bryn Heveldt which I found at Kinokuniya.

[attachmentid=476579]

I figure it won't cost that much to build. The most expensive part would be the 2-channel R/C system, the balsa wood and the fibreglass skin+resin. The other parts required would just take a lot of time and effort but the result should be quite entertaining. I believe this RacingSparrow will be a hot hobby project over time. There's even a group on Facebook for it!

Proton R&D watching too much American Chopper?

Hmmm, apparently some Proton R&D engineers have been watching too much American Chopper. They've produced a bike with a Wira 1.5L engine. I guess they've been spending way too much time on Discovery Channel.
