Slight change in tagging system

Clicking on tags in the thread index inside a forum will no longer save the tag selection if you navigate away from the thread index. This change is made to prevent accidental filtering of tags by unsuspecting users. You may still use persistent tag filters that are located at the bottom right of the forum index.

[IIS5/ASP .NET] Dynamically Generate Javascript

I can't seem to be able to get IIS5 to recognize the .js extension to be interpreted by the ASP .NET engine. I've tried settings build providers, compilers and application configuration mappings but it seems to be printing simple Hello World VB .NET code verbatim.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I've seen a site do this before but I'm not sure what's happening behind the scenes. Thanks a bunch.

New feature: Bump Button for Trade Zone

We've implemented a Bump button for Trade Zone where you can bump your threads without posting a new message. You SHOULD NO LONGER post a new message to bump your threads, and this rule will be enforcable 1 week from now and is punishable by an immediate 3 day suspension.

The bump button will only allow you to bump your own thread ONCE a day, as stated in the Trade Zone rules.

New Feature: Tags

We would like to introduce to you a brand spanking new feature -- thread tags!

Thread tags are basically a tagging system you've been seeing on Slashdot, Technorati and other sites and we at Lowyat.NET didn't want you to feel left out, so we toke the liberty of implementing it ourselves.

Tags are assigned to forums and are unique to each forum, e.g. the Q&A tag in Hardware is different from Q&A in Photography. This allows you to filter tags in a forum without worrying your fav tag in another forum will be filtered as well.

Thread tags are opt-in if specified, e.g. if you select a tag to be filtered (or in less confusing terms, shown) only that tag will be shown. If you choose none, all will be shown since there's not much point staring at a blank forum is there? This allows you to filter all the annoying tags like Chat in Kopitiam.

Moderators may or may not enforce the tagging of threads (like in Jobs and Careers and Garage Sales), and tags are specified for admins since they are supposed to complement subforums.

This is just one of the many new exciting features that you will see in the coming months (admitedly because I'm so busy with work ), although there have been improvements behind the scenes, e.g. new reports hq to track reports better

As usual, feedback is always welcomed and we want to hear your opinions here (e.g. should we make the thread filter expanded by default or otherwise).

FAQ Entries:
How do I use the tag filter?

[J2ME Polish] Ticker and image placement

J2ME is proving impossibly hard to do simple things. I'm trying to do 3 simple things:

1) Get a ticker scrolling at the top of the screen.

2) Menu items with hover images.

3) An image on the left side of the ticker

I have got the 2nd part to work with J2ME Polish, but I can't seem to get the ticker on the top of the screen (it shows it at the bottom) with J2ME Polish because it doesn't provide an API to place it.

I'm using a List with J2ME Polish to enable the hover images, and a List doesn't allow ImageItems, so I can't seem to place the image at the top left corner of the screen.

So if you can find out a way to work 2 without resorting to J2ME Polish, or how to work 1 & 3 with J2ME Polish I'd be extremely greatful.

[J2ME] Launching browser from a form.

I'm just briefing running through J2ME and thus I'm not going through the biginner tutorials to start with the basics. I was wondering how can I launch a page using the phone's browser, which can be any phone.

I'm being told that J2ME is unable to launch external applications, but I'm not sure how this sample application does it. Its in .JAR and has been obfuscated so decompiling is of little help. What this app does is display 9 icons, and each icon when clicked will launch a different page in the browser.

New Codeblock tag available

The tag codeblock has been implemented, this is an extension from the code tag that includes a scroller. The main purpose of this tag is to shorten long code (such as config files, hijackthis logs and other source codes) from taking over the entire page.

Credits to Hydrogenaudio for the inline CSS.
[codeblock]#include <rpc/rpc.h>
#include <rpcsvc/rusers.h>
#include <stdio.h>

/*
* a program that calls the
* rusers() service
*/

main(int argc,char **argv)

{
int num;
if (argc != 2) {
fprintf(stderr, "usage: %s hostname\n",
argv[0]);
exit(1);
}

if ((num = rnusers(argv[1])) < 0) {
fprintf(stderr, "error: rusers\n");
exit(1);
}

fprintf(stderr, "%d users on %s\n", num, argv[1] );
exit(0);
}[/codeblock]

Usage:

CODE

[codeblock]
text
[/codeblock]

[VB .NET] Parsing a Podcast RSS file

I'm parsing a Podcast RSS file and then putting the values into editable textboxes.

The problem I'm facing is parsing the categories..

The categories are written as such if there are subcategories:

CODE

<itunes:category text="Technology">
             <itunes:category text="Gadget" />
        </itunes:category >

If there arent:

CODE

<itunes:category text="Movies" />

There are a maximum of 3 categories, and there may or may not be categories. Each category may or may not have sub catagories as well.

Short of using a very confusing nested IF hell, I'm wondering if anyone else has more attractive or smarter solutions.

I'm using XMLTextReader, and I do not have the schema with me. Other XML parsers will be welcome as well.

Calling for articles

We're planning to launch a monthly bulletin for Lowyat.NET and would like to call all interested forumers to submit articles that will be part of this bulletin.

The bulletin is a general online bulletin that compiles interesting articles every month for light reading on any topic.

The guidelines are:

- There is no scope for your articles, from pets to processors everything is fine

- Articles should be ideally 200-400 words long, you can submit a full featured article and we can summarize it, and the full length article will be kept for an exciting project in the future

- Articles MUST be written by you (or someone you personally know and have saught permission), plagiarism will result in your kidney(s) being removed.

- All articles will be credited to their original author, you can use a psedoname or your real name

- All submissions should preferably be in English (unless you have good reason). Grammar and spelling counts, so please.

- All articles can and will be mercilessly edited (well, maybe)

- KISS (Keep it simple, stupid). Keep all articles as simple as possible, reaching out to the fartest range of audience. This means no superlatives should be used unless neccesary.

- Explain abbreviations if neccesary. If it's a technical article please do explain abbreviations and foreign terms, we may be a tech site (well not really) but there are always newbies.

You can submit your articles in this thread.
