M'sian woman dies, leaves behind 3 adult sons with disabilities 'incapable of self care', MP calls it his 'most complex' case

A Malaysian woman passed away at 81, but left behind three adult sons with disabilities, two of whom are "certified under mental disability".

With their sole caretaker gone, government services now have to find long-term care solutions for them.

The situation first came to the Welfare Department's attention when a member of the public informed them that the mother had been admitted to hospital.

MP Howard Lee said when the mother, the sole caregiver for the three men, passed away on Jun. 12, they needed to come up with a solution for her three sons.

He said that they are unable to take care of themselves, "not even in the slightest way".

He said that among the three brothers, one has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, while another has an undisclosed psychiatric condition. The middle brother suffers from severe learning difficulties.

He noted that with the funeral arrangements having been taken care of, they now have to solve the more complex issue of their long-term care.

Was reading the expose when suddenly 404. Basically it's how the SAYS journalist was able to get the licenses and certificates taraf bumiputera in order to bid on government contractor projects just by paying off consultants, without even the need to physically appear for the courses and exams.

The Slim River magistrate's court ruled that the RM22,352.24 given by P. Navaneeth to N. Retha during their two-year relationship could not be legally classified as a loan.

Instead, magistrate Phulrani Kaur Gurcharon Singh found they were more likely part of financial support exchanged in the course of a romantic relationship.

According to court documents, Navaneeth insisted the sums, ranging from small transfers to larger payments for car maintenance, insurance, and medical bills, were loans that Retha had promised to repay.

Retha in her defence denied ever borrowing money, maintaining that the funds were given voluntarily as gifts or assistance while they were in a relationship and planning a future together.

The court heard that the pair met on Facebook in 2020, fell in love, and lived together sharing expenses and daily life.

Their relationship, however, was fraught with allegations including claims of infidelity, deception and even police reports before ultimately collapsing.

When the romance ended, so too did the financial ties, prompting Navaneeth to demand repayment from his old flame and eventually file a suit.

Phulrani, in her judgment, said the court accepted that some transactions were transferred into Retha's bank account.

However, the magistrate also ruled that there was no intention to create legal relations, a crucial element in establishing a loan.

"The court finds that the parties were in a romantic relationship, and therefore no intention to create legal relations arose.

"It is normal for couples to assist each other financially due to the love that exists between them," she said in her grounds of judgment dated April 10.

Phulrani also emphasised that Navaneeth failed to prove any contractual basis behind the transactions.

"There is no evidence adduced on a balance of probabilities by Navaneeth to show the existence of a contractual context and or legal intention for all the financial transactions in question."

On the issue of repayment, the magistrate said the absence of agreed terms was decisive.

"There were no agreed terms for repayment of the monies between the parties.

"Thus, in the absence of agreed repayment terms, the court finds that the Retha cannot be held responsible to repay the monies to Navaneeth," she said.

P. Rajesweri appeared for Navaneeth while Nathasha Parvena represented Retha.

A Korean security guard has been acquitted on appeal after nearly 2 years of prosecution for eating a Choco Pie and custard cake worth less than $1 from an office fridge during night shift.

39 colleagues testified they'd done same for decades without issue.

The incident took place at 4am on 18 Jan 2024 when a 41-year-old security guard at a logistics facility in Wanju County took the snacks during his patrol rounds. The company manager spotted it on CCTV and reported him to police for theft.

The guard worked for a subcontractor at a Hyundai Motor supply chain facility. He'd been doing security work for 15 years without problems. The total value of the "stolen" items was 1,050 won ($0.72).

Context that emerged later: For over a decade, delivery drivers arriving for early shifts would tell security guards to help themselves to office snacks as a gesture of goodwill. This was apparently routine workplace practice.

Under South Korea's Security Services Industry Act, a theft conviction would have cost him his job. So despite prosecutors initially seeking 500,000 won fine, he requested a formal trial to clear his name.

First trial verdict in May 2025 found him guilty, imposing a reduced fine of 50,000 won. The judge said the guard should have known delivery drivers lacked authority to grant permission.

Public outrage followed immediately.

Media dubbed him "a modern-day Jean Valjean." Social media erupted over prosecuting someone for 1,050 won. Critics saw it as criminalising workplace customs and targeting vulnerable subcontracted workers.

In October, lawmakers grilled court officials during committee hearings. One held up a sign showing the snack prices, asking "Are we really holding trials over eating one of these?"

Faced with mounting criticism, prosecutors performed an extraordinary U-turn. They convened a citizen committee to review the case, then requested a suspended sentence at appeal instead of defending their original position.

Unionists suspected ulterior motives: CCTV showed multiple workers had done the same thing, but only their member was prosecuted. This came after tensions between labour union and security subcontractors.

During the appeal, 39 security colleagues submitted statements confirming they'd eaten from the same fridge during night shifts, risking prosecution themselves to support him. A delivery driver testified about the long-standing custom.

The guard, through his union, expressed relief at clearing his and his colleagues' names, noting the "decades-old mutual courtesy" was suddenly criminalised.

He can now continue working without a criminal record.

Prosecutors say they'll review the full judgement before deciding whether to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Timbalan Pendakwa Raya Nuranisah Ismah Muhammad Husaini menawarkan jaminan sebanyak 8,000 ringgit bagi setiap tertuduh.

Peguam Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) Nur Shaqira Ibrahim memohon jaminan lebih rendah dengan alasan mereka sudah berkahwin, bekerja sendiri, tiada pendapatan tetap serta masing-masing mempunyai 10 dan 14 orang anak.

Mahkamah kemudian membenarkan jaminan sebanyak 3,000 ringgit serta seorang penjamin bagi setiap tertuduh.

Robert Redford, the dashing actor and Oscar-winning director who eschewed his status as a Hollywood leading man to champion causes close to his heart, has died, according to his publicist Cindi Berger, Chairman and CEO of Rogers and Cowan PMK.

He was 89.

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly,” Berger said in a statement to CNN. “The family requests privacy.”

SEREMBAN, May 4 — A woman passenger died when she was run over by a tanker after she fell out of her car while it was negotiating a curve at Kilometre (KM) 26 Jalan Lukut-Sepang, Port Dickson here this morning.

Port Dickson district police chief Supt Maslan Udin said the victim, 39, was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe injuries to the head.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident occurred when the right rear door of the Perodua Myvi the woman was in suddenly opened while the car was negotiating the curve, causing her to be thrown into the opposite lane where she was hit by an oncoming Volvo tanker.

“The woman’s husband, 34, who was driving the car, and their five-month-old baby, who was in a child safety seat in the front passenger seat, along with the tanker driver were unhurt,” he said in a statement here today.

Checks also revealed both vehicles had valid road tax and insurance, while results of the car driver‘s urine test were negative, he said, adding that footage of the tanker’s dashcam had been obtained.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and no criminal elements were found, Maslan said.

He advised the motorists to ensure that their vehicle’s doors were securely locked especially when carrying passengers to avoid such incidents from recurring.

Meanwhile, a man, 20, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a van that failed to stop at a red traffic light along Jalan Persiaran Senawang 1, Paroi near here just past midnight, Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din said.

“The victim died at the scene due to severe injuries to the head after a Toyota Hiace driven by a man, 44, with a woman passenger, 20, from Senawang heading to Bahau failed to stop at the traffic light and hit the Yamaha Y15ZR driven by the victim,” he said in a statement today, adding that the victim’s body was taken to Rembau Hospital’s forensics department for autopsy.

Both the van driver and the passenger were unhurt, and the driver has been arrested to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he said, as he urged those with information on the incident to contact investigating officer, Insp Tiew Chuan Jie at 014-9668399 or the nearest police station. — Bernama

A woman died Saturday after she backed into plane's propeller as she was trying to take a picture at an airfield in Kansas, officials said.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was critically injured and died at the hospital, NBC affiliate KSNW of Wichita reported. The sheriff's office identified her as Amanda Gallagher, 37, of Wichita.

The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

Air Capital Drop Zone, a Kansas-based skydiving company, said in a statement Monday that Gallagher was on one of its flights as an observer to take photos.

“After the airplane landed, for unknown reasons, as the next group of jumpers were boarding, she moved in front of the wing, a violation of basic safety procedures,” the statement said. “With her camera up to shoot photos as she did so, she stepped back slightly moving toward and into the spinning propeller.”
