3 Funky things

Any woman who's ever reached for a glass of wine on a date only to reveal the soaked underarms of her outfit has probably wished she could remove her sweat glands. But long before pit stains became a social obstacle, perspiring was crucial to survival. "Sweat cooled off our ancestors in the grasslands of Africa," says anthropologist Helen Fisher, Ph.D. "It allowed them to hunt and forage without sweltering."

But a hot climate isn't the only thing that makes us sweat. Nerve-racking situations (e.g., a big job interview) can prompt the brain to trigger the release of stress hormones that raise your body's temperature enough to warrant a cooldown.

Here, three funky facts from the science of sweat.

Q: If sweat is just water and salt, why does it reek?

Sweat itself is odorless. But our armpits host special sweat filters called apocrine glands, which secrete an oily substance that, when mixed with bacteria on our skin, begins to smell, says David Pariser, M.D., a dermatology professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. And since sweat is filtered from the bloodstream, pungent food odors can glom on to it. Ever notice how a guy can stink of garlic for days?

Foods That Burn Fat

Q: I've heard you sweat less if you're in better shape. Is this true or false?

False. While we all get damp in hot or tense environments, DNA is what mandates our liquid output. Being in top form doesn't necessarily mean you'll sweat less, says Dee Anna Glaser, M.D. In the same vein, changing your diet won't greatly reduce the amount you ooze.

Q: Sometimes I wake up drenched in sweat, but my bedroom is cool. What's going on?

Your house could be warmer than you think it is; the optimal sleeping temp is 68°F. "Night sweats can also indicate other issues, such as thyroid or adrenal problems," says Glaser. Some medications, including certain sleeping or antidepressant pills, may bring on p.m. sweats as well. If you're waking up to soaked sheets more than twice a week, see your doctor.
Patients receive HIV infected organs

Doctors of a prestigious hospital in Taiwan have transplanted organs from an AIDS virus carrier into five different patients, authorities say.

Taiwan's health authorities said they have begun investigation about a case of "critical medical negligence" that occurred in the National Taiwan University Hospital, AFP reported.

"The National Taiwan University Hospital is required to come up with a detailed report before the end of Tuesday," said Wang Je-chau, a spokesman for the Department of Health.

The story began last week after the family of a brain death 38-year-old man, decided to donate their patient's organs. The relatives of the donor were not aware that he was HIV positive.

Although, laboratory test for infectious disease showed that the donor was an HIV carrier, the results were wrongly translated by a hospital personnel and misled doctors to transplant the patient's liver, lungs and kidneys to five HIV free individuals.

The hospital said the mistake occurred because a transplant staffer believed that the English word "reactive" on the donor's standard HIV test meant negative instead of positive.

Moreover, the result which was delivered by telephone was not double-checked, as required by standards before operating procedures.

Doctors have already begun preventive treatments with anti-AIDS drugs, an official at National Taiwan University Hospital said on Monday.

The responsible staff, if found guilty, may face a jail term of up to 10 years and the hospital may be barred from conducting similar transplant operations for a year, local media reported.

how your EPF is being spent now

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is close to purchasing British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s distribution centre outside central London for £80 million (RM392.22 million).

The Times in London reported today that the EPF is also in talks to buy the Tower Bridge House at St Katharine Docks in London for more than £160 million and part of St James’s Square in the West End for about £150 million.

The pension fund had RM425.5 billion in assets as of end-September last year and is among the largest investors in the Malaysian stock market, holding stakes in almost every major listed company.

The EPF acquired an office building in London last November for £156.7 million as part of plans to invest up to £1 billion in the British property market.

It is also involved locally in re-developing the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) land in Sungei Buloh and a RM23 billion bid to take toll operator Plus Expressways Bhd private with UEM Group Berhad.

Unionists have asked for guarantees on workers’ contributions to Malaysia’s largest pension fund as the Najib administration has turned to the EPF to invest more on the local and foreign fronts.

They said it appeared that the government was dependent on EPF funds in the Budget 2011 proposals tabled last year, where it was allowed to triple investments abroad to 20 per cent from seven per cent previously.

The Times also reported today that the EPF would buy the 670,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s warehouse in Dartford, Kent, which is one of the largest of its type in South East London, from a fund managed by Tristan Capital Partners and AEW Europe.

Britain’s second largest supermarket chain uses the site’s strong road and sea transport links to distribute a wide range of products including beer, wine and spirits.

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/busines...don-properties/

Public Bank’s lavish party sparks ridicule

A grand party thrown for Public Bank founder to mark the bank's 45th anniversary sparked derisive comments in the online community.
VIDEO INSIDE

KUALA LUMPUR: An extravagant party held by a Malaysian bank for its ageing founder has sparked ridicule online, with some comparing it to the type of event held in North Korea to praise leader Kim Jong-Il.

The party was held on July 23 to mark Public Bank Bhd’s 45th anniversary and honour its 81-year-old chairman, Teh Hong Piow, but a video of the lavish celebration only began circulating online on YouTube and elsewhere this week.

The video shows hundreds of bank staff, singers, and dancers waving small flags in a banquet hall to welcome Teh’s arrival.

The bank chief – who was ranked Malaysia’s third-wealthiest person by Forbes magazine this year – was brought in like a head of state, standing in the bed of a pickup truck flanked by motorcycle outriders dressed as policemen.

“Man of honour, a living legend. Let’s rise up now and sing out loud,” the crowd sang as the elderly chairman, backed by a pair of young ladies in tight dresses, slowly waved to cheering guests.

“He’s our champion, makes us feel proud. He gives us mission, gives us fire, gives us vision, takes us higher.”

Dozens of performers later stretched out their arms, as if worshipping Teh.

The extravangza was savaged by Malaysian users of Twitter and numerous blogs.

“Malaysia’s latest religious cult: Public Bank. Kim Jong-Il would be jealous,” tweeted Khairy Jamaluddin, head of Umno Youth.

One blogger said Teh should use bank assets to help the community rather than fund such huge celebrations.

“Big sigh, what a waste. Surely, he would go down in history better if he would dish out all that money for some decent community work instead,” the blogger said.

Teh founded the publicly-listed bank – which is now the country’s third-largest in terms of assets – in 1966 and has received numerous awards over the years as one of Malaysia’s top bankers.

Forbes has estimated his personal wealth at US$3 billion (RM8.9 billion).

http://youtu.be/INm7japeUDU

- AFP

6P illegals made to swear support for BN

Wanita PKR claims 6P illegals made to swear support for BN
By Yow Hong Chieh
August 16, 2011

PETALING JAYA, Aug 16 — Wanita PKR said it has proof that illegal immigrants registering with the Home Ministry’s 6P amnesty programme have been made to swear an oath that they and their families will vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) come polling day.

The allegation comes even as opposition parties continue to uncover what they claim are instances of permanent residents being given citizenship by the ruling coalition in exchange for votes, an accusation the Election Commission (EC) has downplayed as technical errors.

Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin (picture) said illegal immigrants who “respected Malaysia’s Constitution” and were worried about their own safety had brought to the party evidence in the form of a written statement requiring them to pledge allegiance to Umno and BN.

The statement, copies of which she handed reporters, reads: “Bismillahhirahmanirrahim. Wallahi Wabillahi Watawallahi. I (name) in the name of Allah pledge and promise to be loyal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultans and Malaysia.

“I / my husband / my wife / my children will undividedly support and vote Umno / Barisan Nasional (BN). I will also continue to fight for Islam and the Malay race. My family and I promise to keep this SECRET, and if I break it I will pay the price.”

Zuraida said the statement was allegedly obtained from 6P centres in either Sepang, Hulu Selangor or Shah Alam but would not specify which.

She also stressed that in light of this evidence, the Najib administration must put a stop to the 6P programme and conduct a high-level probe into the allegations to ensure that the amnesty drive does not violate the country’s sovereignty.

“This action clearly shows that the 6P amnesty programme is part of a ploy to sell the country’s sovereignty purely to ensure continuity of power for Umno and Barisan Nasional, which are increasingly being rejected by the people,” she told reporters at PKR headquarters here today.

“All rational and patriotic Malaysians know that this trick is a form of treason by Umno and Barisan Nasional.”

Zuraida urged the BN leadership to put an end to their treason if they “have any honour left” before more proof of alleged electoral roll rigging is made public, saying that PKR has amassed considerable evidence in this regard.

sos: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/litee/m...support-for-bn/

‘Najib Perdana Menteri Terakhir’

“Saya cuma nak selamatkan parti. Ini penting,” katanya yang berusia awal 40-an.

Shahbudin Husin

The music will stop

The music will stop
Written by Jerry Chan
Tuesday, 26 July 2011 14:08

Costs are going up, land prices are escalating. Surely Penang house prices will move in tandem? Yes and no.

It is true that developers are now improving on design, concept, finishes and quality in order to achieve better selling prices and quicker sales. However, as in all big ticket items, there will come a time when the consumer says “I can’t afford it” or “it’s just too pricey now”.

Surely, we are not at that stage yet, are we? The ingredients have been right for a property price boom; recovering economy, inflation making property a suitable hedge, low interest rates and a very compliant lending policy for housing loans. Low property gains tax and a rising market have made investing and speculation in the property sector very profitable, both on paper and
realised.

The danger is taking for granted that the “Goldilocks” scenario will continue for an extended period. It certainly won’t be. Again, rising prices bring out supply, draw sellers out and as much as we hope it won’t happen, increase the temptation for a change in policy or legislation. All or some of these can be a dampener, or worse, ingredients souring up big time at the same time. It has happened before and most certainly it will happen again. When it does is anybody’s guess. The music will stop and we will be left to see who ends up holding the baby.

Property should always be looked upon as a long-term holding, simply because that’s the nature of the development business. It takes time to buy land, get approvals and build. Most importantly, a family needs a roof over their heads. While interest rates are low and loan tenures are now very long it is easier to look at a house, which before the recent price rises, would have been beyond the reach of many.

It would be unwise to presume upon the future, that interest rates will always be low, our pay packet will continue to rise and banks will continue to be accommodating. As the world becomes more interconnected financially and economically, the only certainty is uncertainty. Uncertainty in whether scandals will arise, corporates get into a financial quagmire or countries become technically insolvent. It is not that long ago that Dubai property developers had to be bailed out, huge numbers of defaults happened on both commercial and residential purchases. We see the same for the Eastern Europe property sector after rapid price escalation, ditto for the Spanish and Irish sectors.

A roof over our heads is what matters, and what is in excess we should invest wisely and for the long term. It doesn’t mean that just because banks are keen to lend, one should borrow to the hilt. Generally for equities, bonds or businesses, there is a certain percentage of lending against the security. No doubt loans against residential property are low risk but lending has in recent times been at levels never seen before in this country, reminiscent of what happened in the US before the last economic crisis. Does that indicate something?

It is best to live within your means, be safe and sure rather than to keep chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The day of reckoning will surely come for all of us. Are we ready when our music stops? Make sure your house and finances are on a firm foundation, the solid rock.

Datuk Jerry Chan is chairman of the Real Estate Housing Developers’ Association, Penang branch.

This article appeared in The Edge Financial Daily, July 25, 2011.

http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/commentary/...-will-stop.html
