The claim is that the name no longer fits with the image of a modern and inclusive Malaysia. But this kind of proposal brings up a bigger question — if KTM, a name in our national language and one that carries deep historical significance, is considered outdated, what about the many towns and places in Malaysia that still carry the names of colonial officers and British royalty?

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Keretapi Tanah Melayu is not a colonial name. It is rooted in our own history, unlike George Town—named after King George III—or Port Dickson, Fraser’s Hill, Cameron Highlands, and Butterworth, which were named during the British colonial era. KTM represents a local and national identity. It reflects the spirit of a growing Malaya that eventually became an independent nation. Saying that Tanah Melayu is no longer relevant is to overlook the long journey of this land and its people.

Some people feel that Tanah Melayu sounds exclusive and does not reflect the multicultural nature of Malaysia today. But actually, Tanah Melayu refers to the historical and geographical reality of the Malay Peninsula—it’s not a statement to exclude anyone. Historically, Tanah Melayu simply means Land of the Malays—what’s wrong with acknowledging that fact? Just as Thailand is the land of the Thais, and China the land of the Chinese, it is perfectly natural for the Malay Peninsula to be referred to by its historical identity. That does not mean there is no room for others; it just reflects the roots of the land.

What’s ironic is the reaction we see when people try to change colonial names. Take George Town, for example. When there was a suggestion to rename it Tanjung Penaga, which was the original name of the area, many of the same people who support changing KTM were quick to criticise. Some said it would “erase history” or “confuse tourists”, even though the name George Town itself came from colonial rule. The irony is hard to miss—a colonial name is defended strongly, while a local, historical name like KTM is seen as outdated. This kind of double standard is quite hard to understand.

If we are serious about decolonisation or rebranding our national identity, then we should start by reviewing names that clearly came from colonial times. Why are names like George Town and Butterworth still around in post-independence Malaysia? Why haven’t places like Fraser’s Hill and Cameron Highlands been renamed to reflect our local heritage and identity? If the goal is to move past old identities, then surely colonial names should be the first to go—not a name like KTM that comes from our own language and culture.

Names are not just for convenience—they carry meaning. Keretapi Tanah Melayu brings back memories, a sense of belonging, and national pride. It’s a living symbol of our past, and one that has grown together with us as a nation. Changing it is not really progress—it’s more like forgetting who we are.

In the end, let’s not be too quick to throw away our own identity just to look “modern”. If KTM needs to go because it’s seen as old-fashioned, then we should be fair and apply the same logic to all names—especially those left behind by colonial rule. Otherwise, we might end up protecting the names of our colonisers while slowly erasing our own.

* Associate Professor Dr Mohd Hazmi Mohd Rusli is a senior lecturer at Faculty of Syariah and Law, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia.

Read Malay Mail: https://www.malaymail.com/news/what-you-thi...hd-rusli/174436

Dear HR experts what are the consequences if a job applicant signs a contract for full time employment and then changes his mind about joining the company?

E.g. Company A offers me a full time position (i.e. not contract based) with a starting date on 1 Feb 2019, and I've signed the contract.
Later, say on 2 Jan 2019, I change my mind and inform them I'm not joining.
What will happen besides making enemies with Company A? Are there any legal consequences?
Note the contract only has standard terms about pay, benefits, work hours, confidentiality and termination notice period after joining.

Business Times has learnt that the group’s affiliates — AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia), Thai AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, AirAsia X Bhd and Indonesia X — had agreed to relocate to the main terminal.
The decision was made following the revised passenger service charges (PSCs) by Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) on Monday. It is also learnt that AirAsia senior management had consulted Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) management on the matter.
In a statement on Monday, AirAsia and AirAsia X had said the services at KLIA and klia2 were not at par, and passengers enjoy far superior services at the main terminal.
AirAsia and its affiliates are now the largest klia2 operator, capturing 98 per cent of flights at the terminal.

Read More: http://www.nst.com.my/news/2016/11/185260/...-klia-shift-jan

Abu Sayyaf angry ransom money got songlapped

If you every get kidnapped, prepare at least 30 million pesos to buy your life.

QUOTE

MANILA: Abu Sayyaf militants are reported to be angry that some of the money collected from families and friends of four Malaysian sailors abducted in April this year did not reach them.
They are said to be upset because although those handling the ransom money had raised P130 million (RM12 million), only P100 million was given to the kidnappers.
The Manila Times reported that the missing amount raised suspicion that the rebels might be in cahoots with government officials from Malaysia and the Philippines who may have shared the money among themselves.
The report, quoting “two highly placed senior Philippine government officials”, said the payment of ransom was confirmed by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The New Straits Times had reported Zahid as saying that the RM12 million raised by the victims’s families had been handed over to the Special Branch and that this money was then channelled to several legal non-governmental organisations in the Philippines. He said the money was not paid as ransom. However, Malaysian police later denied being involved in any ransom payment.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Subsequent to the payment, brothers Wong Teck Kang, 31, and Teck Chii, 29; their cousin Johnny, 21; and co-worker Wong Hung Sing, 34 were released.
The four, crew of a tugboat, were abducted off Sabah on April 1 by a group of armed men on a speedboat. They were released in Jolo, Sulu, on June 7 after long-drawn negotiations with the Abu Sayyaf militants led by sub-commander Apo Mike.
“We got information that the Abu Sayyaf group was incensed after learning from news reports that the money was actually RM12 million, equivalent to P130 million but that only P100 million reached them,” one of the senior officials, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, told The Manila Times.
“The question is, where did the missing money go?” the source asked.
The report said there were rumours that the money went through the Special Branch of the Malaysian police who passed it to local officials in Sulu before it reached the Abu Sayyaf group.
“From what we gathered, a local government official in Sulu was involved in the negotiations. It is common knowledge in Malaysia that usually P30 million is paid as ransom for any number of Malaysian victims in the past. The P130 million by far is the highest,” the report quoted another source as saying.
According to The Manila Times source, there is credence to allegations by Jolo Mayor Hussin Amin that some local officials, probably including the military, may have colluded with the Abu Sayyaf group which recently beheaded Canadian Robert Hall.
The Abu Sayyaf is still holding several foreign and local hostages, including Hall’s girlfriend Maritess Flor and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad
.
Sos: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...y-went-to-them/

The paper said the memo was sent in 2007 to “deputy governor of RBA” by Brian Hood, a senior business executive of NPA.

The RBA is now being accused of a cover-up, as this document was never before revealed despite a parliamentary committee investigating the matter.

The RBA had issued a statement denying that it had misled the parliamentary committee, explaining that the said document was “not new”.

According to The Age, the memo had, among other matters, warned that “extraordinarily” large payments made by NPA to its Malaysian agent had been used to make “payments to others – including officials… and politicians”.

It also said that the Malaysian agent had admitted that such payoffs were “the accepted way of doing business in that part of the world”.

Malaysian middleman

The same agent had asked for NPA’s funds to be directed to an ANZ account of a mystery “nominated individual” whose “position” the lobbyist refused to disclose.

An online transcript of the memo read: “My concerns over probity in respect of the Malaysian agent first arose when he requested commission funds owing to him be directed to an ANZ Brisbane account of a nominated individual.”

“When I indicated that this request wouldn’t be entertained by NPA, he retracted the request. The agent would not explain what position/role the nominated individual held.

“During a visit to Melbourne, the agent sought to reassure me that dealing through such ‘networks’ was the accepted way of doing business in that part of the world,” Hood also wrote in the memo.

The memo also said that NPA was giving its overseas agents “greatly exceeded” industry standards and that those agents had admitted paying off officials.

While the Malaysian agent was not specifically named in the memo, businessman Abdul Kayum Syed Ahmad has been repeatedly singled out as the Malaysian middleman representing NPA and Securency in the scandal.

The scandal broke out in 2009 after news reports forced RBA to initiate investigations with the police. It is illegal in Australia to use middlemen to procure government contracts.

In July, 2011, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) conducted joint investigations with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in which six Australian executives from the two banknote companies, and two Malaysians were arrested.

Abdul Kayum, 62, who is also an arms dealer, was charged with giving bribes amounting to RM100,000 through a middleman to former Bank Negara assistant governor Mohamad Daud Dol Moin for help in procuring a polymer note printing contract.

Tip of the iceberg

Daud was alleged to have received the bribe to procure the contract, which saw NPA and Securency International awarded a RM95 million contract to print the RM5 polymer notes.

Abdul Kayum is charged under Section 11 (a) of the Anti-Corruption Act and faces up to 20 years in jail and a fine of five times the bribe amount. He faces the same penalty under Section 16 of the Anti-Corruption Act if found guilty.

Daud, 58, was charged with accepting the RM100,000 bribe from Abdul Kayum to help secure the contract. Daud faces the same punishement if convicted under Section 11(a).

Both men, accused of giving and receiving two bribes of RM50,000 each between Dec 1, 2004, and Feb 16, 2005, had pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, the six former employees of NPA and Securency International were then also charged at the Sydney magistrate’s court with “bribing Asian officials to secure contracts to print their currencies”.

They were former Securency chief executive Myles Curtis; former NPA chief executive John Leckenby; former Securency chief financial officer Mitchell Anderson; former NPA chief financial officer Peter Hutchinson; former Securency sales executive Rognvald Marchant and
former NPA sales executive Barry Brady.

Although Abdul Kayum is said to be at the centre of the investigations for Malaysian and Australian police, it was reported that the charging of Daud was only the “tip of the iceberg”, with more senior officials involved in the scandal.

Former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had to deny allegations that two Australian banknote firms attempted to bribe him for a RM100 million Malaysian currency contract when he was still in office.

The Age had reported that anti-graft authorities believe Securency International and NPA allegedly sought to bribe Abdullah in 2003, with part of RM13.5 million in commissions made to two Malaysian middlemen.

Other than Kayum, the other agent for Securency International and NPA was named as former Umno state assemblyman Abdullah Hasnan Kamaruddin.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s name was also mentioned in the scandal as another report had alleged that Securency International had hired a company chaired by his brother to help it win banknote contracts in Malaysia in 2009 as it could “offer it access to, and influence over,
Malaysia’s top politicians”.

The company, Liberal Texhnology Sdn Bhd, later said that Haris Onn Hussein, who is also Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s cousin, had sold his shares in 2006

Previously, it was also reported that three people were charged with being paid RM11.3 million to secure the contract from Bank Negara and to ensure that the government of Malaysia opted for polymer notes.

Meanwhile, RBA governor Glenn Stevens is expected to face questions about the allegations and the 2007 memo at a parliamentary committee hearing in Canberra on Friday.

The memo apparently contradicts several previous statements made by Stevens to a federal parliamentary committee in 2011 that the RBA did not know of bribes and corruption inside its subsidiaries before the 2009 reports.

Stevens had later corrected his testimony to say that a document had been provided to his deputy Ric Battellino, who is now retired.

The police inquiry began in May 2009 after The Age exposed the scandal.

Securency International prints polymer banknotes for 30 countries and was responsible for the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games RM50 commemorative notes. The company itself has also been charged with three counts of conspiracy to influence foreign officials.
