[POLL] EVGA Pascal cards overheating

Background: It has not been too long ago when EVGA was exposed that their GTX 970's GPUs are not properly aligned with the copper heatpipes of the heatsink (only 2 out of 3 copper heatpipes are in direct contact with the GPU). This in turn, caused the GPU to have higher temperatures, and produced more fan noise than its competitors.
http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/evga-gefo...eatpipes,5.html

This issue apparently started from the GTX 760 - https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GT...X_Cooler/5.html.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Fast forward to 2016, EVGA is caught skimping on cooling on their GPUs' VRM cooling.
In Tom's Hardware's test, the VRM can go as high as 114 degrees Celcius on an open bench with 22 degrees Celcius ambient temperature. Imagine what will happen if you have a poorly ventilated case with case ambient temperature of 35 degrees Celcius.

Note the FETs that are completely exposed (not cooled by aluminum or copper) after the shroud is off.

As a result - 106.9 degrees Celcius on a test bench using thermal imaging. A thermal probe revealed that the actual temperature is 114 degrees Celcius. The TjMax of the FETs are 125 degrees Celcius - hence why the FETs are exploding in poorly ventilated cases.

When reports started to surface that EVGA cards are failing, EVGA attempted to deny the claims.
Below is the statement published by Guru3D:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

"The test used in the referenced review from Toms Hardware (Germany) is running under Furmark, an extreme usage case, as most overclockers know. We believe this is a good approach to have some idea about the graphics card limit, and the thermal performance under the worst case scenario. EVGA has performed a similar qualification test during the design process, at a higher ambient temperature (30C in chamber) with a thermal coupler probe directly contacting the key components and after the Toms Hardware (Germany) review, we have retested this again. The results in both tests show the temperature of PWM and memory is within the spec tolerance under the same stress test, and is working as originally designed with no issues.

With this being said, EVGA understands that lower temperatures are preferred by reviewers and customers.

During our recent testing, we have applied additional thermal pads between the backplate and the PCB and between the baseplate and the heatsink fins, with the results shown below. We will offer these optional thermal pads free of charge to EVGA owners who want to have a lower temperature. These thermal pads will be ready soon; and customers can request them on Monday, October 24th, 2016. Also, we will work with Toms Hardware to do a retest."

Basically EVGA blamed Furmark for those temperatures. Also, EVGA must have been using a different testing method as multiple review sites reported temperatures being alarmingly high from the beginning. Most of those sites retested and confirmed that their initial tests were accurate. EVGA eventually admitted that it was a design flaw and will proceed to send out thermal pads, or give free exchanges for users with the thermal pad alongside a VBIOS update to increase the fan speed to keep the VRM temperatures in check.

While I praise EVGA on their actions following this incident, I cannot help to wonder - why did EVGA skimp on VRM cooling?
It costs us about $3-5 to buy thermal pads from retailers and I am sure it would not add more than $2 to the cost per card for cards that range from $429 - $699.

Having the MOSFET cooled by nothing but air (which is a poor thermal conductor) is kind of irresponsible. Based on their statement, it does seem like they were trying to cut cost by just ensuring the cards are hovering near breakpoint of the MOSFETs (TjMax of 125 degree Celcius).

I am interested to hear your thoughts on this whole fiasco.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After some more research, it looks like EVGA indeed mess up their design of the cooler.
The cooling of the VRM was simply not taken into account - the design was to let cool the VRMs using air.

If you look closely at how the FETs are positioned (in a narrow slot of the plate), you will know that there is virtually no where for air to escape, besides the way it came in.
That is a dead spot.

Next, we look at the fix that EVGA is prescribing to this issue.

1. VBIOS update for a more aggressive fan curve.
- This is fair. More air means the card gets cooler.
- The bad - this introduces more noise, meaning that all initial reviews for these cards are invalid..
Some review sites are reporting 10 dB more noise which means the noise is doubled.

2. Thermal pads for the VRMs
- Thermal pads are provided to cover the whole slot for the VRMs as well as behind the VRMs.
- The front thermal pad connects the VRMs to the fins of the cooler.
- The back thermal pad connects the PCB area of the VRMs to the backplate.
- A picture of the thermal pad application is shown below.

- So far, initial testings based on thermal imaging is showing a lower temperature.
- However, since the VRMs are all completely covered, the results might not be accurate.
- Gamersnexus is planning another test using thermal probes below the thermal pads here. It will be interesting to see the results.

So in conclusion, we are still not sure whether this thermal mod can completely eliminate the issue since thermal imaging is obscured by the thermal pads.
Additional testing using thermal probe is needed to see if the VRMs are cooled properly under the thermal pads.

New VBIOS update introduces higher fan speed. All reviews regarding fan noise before the fix are invalid - unless you force your own fan curve at the risk of damaging the VRMs in the long run.

And to those who are planning a new gaming setup, please take these into consideration while choosing your graphic card.

Edit: Added pictures.
Edit 2: Additional thoughts and my personal opinion on how this happened.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last edit: Conclusion
Gamersnexus has completed their tests with thermal probes. Video here.
I agree with their test methodology and have no reason to doubt their results.

Apparently, the reason that the cards are exploding are not because of thermal issues, but bad capacitors.
EVGA is reporting a 200 defective cards per million cards shipped - that is 0.2%, definitely not a number that I'd be worried about.

EVGA giving out thermal pads for a non-VRM thermal issue does puzzle me. But I think it is mostly to stop the backlash from the videos of exploding graphic cards.

TL:DR version: No VRM thermal issues.

Avg. FPS is an inaccurate reflection of game play

This is a very informative and concise article regarding why the average FPS of a benchmark does not reflect the experience of game play.

It also proceeds to analyze why SLI / CFX configurations tend to be worse than single cards even though the SLI / CFX configuration has much higher average FPS.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/21516/8

"Naturally, we contacted the major graphics chip vendors to see what they had to say about the issue. Somewhat to our surprise, representatives from both AMD and Nvidia quickly and forthrightly acknowledged that multi-GPU micro-stuttering is a real problem, is what we measured in our frame-time analysis, and is difficult to address. Both companies said they've been studying this problem for some time, too. That's intriguing, because neither firm saw fit to inform potential customers about the issue when introducing its most recent multi-GPU product, say the Radeon HD 6990 or the GeForce GTX 590. Hmm. "

Dear LYN members,

I'm considering to purchase a laser printer since my second ink jet started having paper feeder and driver problems. I'm also tired from injecting ink into the cartridge.

I've considered CISS for my printer but I don't need to print color, just black for my notes. So I think laser printer will fit best.

I came across a few printers:

Canon LBP3050 - RM299
-Toner with 1500 pages

Fuji Xerox P205 - RM289
-Toner with 2200 pages

Samsung ML1660 - RM245
-Toner with 1500 pages

HP M1132
-Toner with 1500 pages
-Build in scanner

I'm also confused by the specs such as:-
i. Monthly duty cycle
ii. Drum (have no idea what this is. Shop guy says need replacement from time to time)

I need laser printer owners to share their experience using laser printers, preferably if its one of the models i mentioned.

Upgrading dilemmas

Dear LYN forumers,

After I replaced my monitor to a Dell U2311H, I'm beginning to feel that my system is inadequate for gaming anymore. The resolution upgrade from 1600x900 to 1920x1080 is making my system lag on games like NFS: Hot Pursuit.
However, I already noticed the slight lag even before the monitor upgrade.

My system specs are as the following:

Intel Core2Duo E8400
Asus P5Q-SE
4GB Kingston Value RAM DDR2 800
Palit HD 4850 Sonic
Silverstone Strider Evolution 500W

Budget to upgrade is around RM1000.

I'm torn between upgrading my processor, platform or graphic card.

Choice 1 - Upgrade processor
Sell off my E8400 and get a Q9400. However, I cannot overclock on my current motherboard.

Choice 2 - Upgrade platform
Sell off my platform and get a Core i5-2400, Asus P8H67-M, and 4GB DDR 1333MHz RAM.

Choice 3 - Upgrade graphic card
Sell off my 4850 and get a GTX570. Possibly needs a PSU upgrade for that. The most expensive option yet.

Choice 4 - Upgrade processor and graphic card
Get a Q9400 and a GTX560 or 6870.

I don't really care about AA and AF. I only want the game to run as smooth as possible (minimum FPS more than 30 so that the spikes won't make me headache). Eye candy is just a plus for me.

I really hope for feedbacks from senior members that are constructive. Thank you.

Dear LYN forumers,

I was asked to build a rig by a friend. I'll list down the purpose of the rig below according to the importance of the purpose:
1. MATLAB 2010
2. AutoCAD
3. 3D Maya
4. Adobe Photoshop

Rig should include everything from monitor to casing.

Here's what I came up with for now.

Processor: Intel Core i7 870 - 915
Motherboard: Asus P7H55M - 300
RAM : 2X Kingston 2GB DDR3 1333MHz - 240
Graphic Card:
HDD: Samsung F3 Spinpoint 1TB - 180
PSU: Silverstone Essentials 500W - 219
Casing : CM Elite 430 - 130
Monitor: Acer S231HL - 585
ODD: any - 70

Totals up to 2459.

Haven't decided on the GC yet. Please give some suggestions.

Core i3-530 vs Ahtlon II X4 635

Dear LYN forumers,

I was asked to build a rig for a fellow friend. Budget is RM2300-RM2500. Given such a low budget, I came up with 2 sets of build, using the cheapest i3 and the AMD Athlon II X4 635. This rig is meant for gaming (FPS mostly, but I'm pretty sure he'll wanna play SC2 and such).

I have already posted the topic concerning the setup on another post here, but what I'd like to ask is:

1. Which is better in gaming?
2. Which one overclocks better on a cheap motherboard?

I've been through almost every review there is on both the models. It is obvious that those bigshot reviewers are very biased, as I found most that says that the Ahtlon II is better because it has 4 cores while there are some sites who strongly suggest that the i3 has the upperhand in gaming as the Athlon II lacks in a L3 cache. Others claim that they are equal for gaming, but in terms of rendering, the Athlon II is better.

Moreover, the overclocking in those sites utilizes boards like the Maximus III Formula. Who on earth is gonna buy a RM1k+ board to OC processors that are below RM350?

I'd like those who own those processors to help me out here. Tell me everything about gaming performance to overclocking (please state your motherboard) so I can proceed with building the rig.

I'll just copy the build here for easier reference.

Processor: Intel Core i3 530 - RM360 (PC Zone)
Motherboard: Asus P7H55M - RM299 (C-Zone)
RAM: 2GB Kingston DDR3-1333Mhz - RM145 (PC Zone)
Graphic Card: Winfast GTX460 768MB - RM649 (PC Zone)
HDD: Samsung F3 Spinpoint 500GB - RM135 (PC Zone)
PSU: Silverstone Strider 500W - RM239 (C-Zone)
Monitor: AOC 2436VW - RM565 (PC Zone)

Optical drive: Reuse from old system
Casing: Reuse from old system

Total: RM2392

Alternate
Processor: AMD Ahtlon II X4 635 - RM320 (PC Zone)
Motherboard: Asus M4A77TD PRO/M4A77TD - RM290/RM250 (PC Zone)

Total: RM2343/2303

Thank you in advance.
