Iran bans women from universities

Perfect timing as well, during the holy month of Ramadhan, thank God!

QUOTE

Female students in Iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.

In a move that has prompted a demand for a UN investigation by Iran's most celebrated human rights campaigner, the Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, 36 universities have announced that 77 BA and BSc courses in the coming academic year will be "single gender" and effectively exclusive to men.

It follows years in which Iranian women students have outperformed men, a trend at odds with the traditional male-dominated outlook of the country's religious leaders. Women outnumbered men by three to two in passing this year's university entrance exam.

Senior clerics in Iran's theocratic regime have become concerned about the social side-effects of rising educational standards among women, including declining birth and marriage rates.

Under the new policy, women undergraduates will be excluded from a broad range of studies in some of the country's leading institutions, including English literature, English translation, hotel management, archaeology, nuclear physics, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and business management.

The Oil Industry University, which has several campuses across the country, says it will no longer accept female students at all, citing a lack of employer demand. Isfahan University provided a similar rationale for excluding women from its mining engineering degree, claiming 98% of female graduates ended up jobless.

Writing to Ban Ki Moon, the UN secretary general, and Navi Pillay, the high commissioner for human rights, Mrs Ebadi, a human rights lawyer exiled in the UK, said the real agenda was to reduce the proportion of female students to below 50% – from around 65% at present – thereby weakening the Iranian feminist movement in its campaign against discriminatory Islamic laws.
"[It] is part of the recent policy of the Islamic Republic, which tries to return women to the private domain inside the home as it cannot tolerate their passionate presence in the public arena," says the letter, which was also sent to Ahmad Shaheed, the UN's special rapporteur for human rights in Iran. "The aim is that women will give up their opposition and demands for their own rights."

The new policy has also been criticised by Iranian parliamentarians, who summoned the deputy science and higher education minister to explain.

However, the science and higher education minister, Kamran Daneshjoo, dismissed the controversy, saying that 90% of degrees remain open to both sexes and that single-gender courses were needed to create "balance".

Iran has highest ratio of female to male undergraduates in the world, according to UNESCO. Female students have become prominent in traditionally male-dominated courses like applied physics and some engineering disciplines.

Sociologists have credited women's growing academic success to the increased willingness of religiously-conservative families to send their daughters to university after the 1979 Islamic revolution. The relative decline in the male student population has been attributed to the desire of young Iranian men to "get rich quick" without going to university.

sos: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...iversities.html

Latest Easy Pha-max Scam!

After the Wheatgrass fiasco, here comes round 2. Introducing... Sihat 1Malaysia or S1M. Its some sort insurance scheme cum 'health software' cum health products, but sounds just as lousy as before. Costs like RM10k but they're selling it now at a 'promotional price' of RM4k. Those that sign up are encouraged to get more members for 'commissions'.

Anyone heard about it yet? Apparently some people that I knew fell for it. They're now recruiting people using high pressure tactics. And based on feedback, their techniques are almost the same, here's what they tried on me:

1. Suddenly FB Messaged me saying hi and making small talk (haven't talked to this guy in years)
2. Suggests that we meet at McD/Some cafe to discuss a 'business proposal' endorsed by 'Datuk Lee Chong Wei' (repeatedly placing emphasis).
3. Refuse to disclose any information regarding this proposal on FB and insists that we meet face to face right away
4. After repeatedly questioning his plans, he revealed vague information about some sort of health plan
5. Finally revealed that the company name is Easy Pha-max
6. Closed chatbox and ignored him right after hearing easy phamax.
[INFO] Matriks admission facts

Info
There are about 1000 places in each Matriculation center, more in some places and less in smaller ones.
There are a total of 14 Matriculation centers in Peninsular Malaysia and 1 in Labuan.
2 are under MARA (reserved 100% for bumis), 3 are Technical colleges (offering vocational eg Engineering subjects).

Facts
The Matriculation system is racist. I'm wont even bother trying to sound politically correct. 90% of places are reserved for Bumis, 10% for Non-Bumis. The system doesn't care whether the 90% have better results than the 10% or the other way around, as long the quota is fulfilled. So, you could have 10As or 12As but someone 'more privileged' will be admitted, just to satisfy the quota. That being said, let's take a look at the admission system.

Bumi
If you're a Bumi, your chances are very high, almost guaranteed. If you fail to get it, it could be because
i) MARA/JPA might be waiting for you?
ii) Your results are terrible.
iii) Something went wrong with the sytem? Try appealing.

Non-Bumi
If happen to fall under this category, have fun fighting for the 10% of remaining seats, which is by a rough estimate, just around 1000 places throughout Malaysia. When our Education Ministry talks about meritocracy, they weren't joking, meritocracy applies here. Although really this is more like a mockery of the word meritocracy, since only 10% are heavily competing with each other.

Anyway, everyone has a total score of 100% to earn, 90% Academics 10% Co-curriculum. The ones with the highest are admitted until they fill the quota.

Academics
1. The system doesn't care about how many A+s you have, surprised?
2. The only thing you should be worried about is your Math, Add Math and 2 out of 3 Sciences. (For Science students, not so sure about Accounts)
3. If you managed to get A+ for those 4 subjects, congratulations, you have 90% full marks for Academics.
4. Don't worry if you missed one A+ for a Science subject, it still counts as 90% if you got A+ for at least 2 Science and 2 Maths.

This is very important, you need at least 4A+s for MATH AND SCIENCE.
If you miss even one A+, your chances of getting admitted are almost nil. That's no joke.

Co-curriculum
1. This is the CGPA (Annual Ko-K marks from Form1 to Form5) score sent to the Education Department by your school
2. If you don't know the score, go find your Principal/Ko-K Assistant
3. For my batch, the lowest Non-Bumi Ko-K CGPA was around 75%
4. To be safe, make sure your Ko-K CGPA is higher than 80%.

As you can see, the system is 'very fair'. There's no such thing as luck in the admission process. The top 10% of students (this is debatable), in terms of SPM subject results and Ko-K marks are chosen.

So if we add up the two previous examples, 90% + 7.5% = 97.5%
The lowest admission score for non-bumis should be somewhere around that number. That's why the 4 A+s are crucial. If you missed even one, your score will be lower than most of the other applicants.

Appeals
1. Not to discourage you but, appeals almost never work.
2. Speaking from experience, many of my schoolmates with 9/10As and excellent Ko-K appealed and got still got rejected.
3. Reasons: Primarily, missed one A+ for their Science. Thus, had a lower score than other applicants.
4. If you did however, get the 4A+ but fail to get admitted due to a lower Ko-K CGPA, I suppose your chances might be higher when you appeal.

But, don't lose hope yet. Get a group of your friends and go to the press. Find your local reporters, get your story out in the news. Find your local MCA service center, DAP service center or other parties and COMPLAIN, as much as you can. Find any loudmouthed ADUN/MP and complain even more. Start putting pressure on the Education Ministry, who knows, it just might work.

Free Energy Suppression

I've been reading a few controversial topics lately regarding this.

Apparently,

1) Very cheap/free generation of energy is readily available for consumer use but the technology is being suppressed by the oil industry giants to protect their interest.

2) As early as Tesla's time, his idea of a free wireless power transmitter to the entire globe was already being suppressed by one J.P Morgan, because he can't charge consumers for using Tesla's ideas.

3) This might be a bit wrong as I'm too lazy to Google for the source, but it goes something like this. According to James Maxwell's original 20 equations, energy exists even inside a vacuum and it is possible to 'harvest' that energy for usage.

4) Morgan was a businessman and not a scientist, but he had lots of advisors on science. He ordered them to reduce Maxwell's equations to the 4 'Maxwell equations' well-known today. The part about energy in a vacuum had been removed and till this day, not discussed in conventional textbooks.

5) There are plenty of other stories such as government cover-ups, murders/threats to inventors who announced their inventions to the public, reluctance of the scientific community to accept new ideas and one interesting case of the US company GM motors who destroyed their own EV1 electric cars which were highly efficient.

I don't know how much of this is true but I do find it very interesting. It seems that many (including me last time) would just blindly dismiss all this as crackpot theories, "violation of 1st law of thermodynamics", "you can't create energy from nothing" and won't even discuss about this.

I'm still holding a skeptical stance on this, but those websites do sound quite convincing. If this is true, who knows what else the rich and powerful are covering up. If the knowledge and technology exists, EVERYONE has the right to know. Science must never be suppressed for business interests.

As for my sources, they are mostly the top few hits on Google, searching terms like 'free energy'.

Welcome any opinions.

[WTA] Free Unlimited Internet for Hotlink users

There's an advertisement on fb offering free, unlimited internet (not wifi) with only a one time fee of rm xx, for Hotlink users only. It was stated that any model can use this 'service', as long as the phone can browse the web (don't need 3g/wifi), and the network is Hotlink. The only thing you need to do is bring your phone to an agent.

Anyone heard anything like this before? The advertisement said that many hp shops (Penang) offer this service.
