TV viewers could soon be able to cut out the annoying sound of the vuvuzela when they watch World Cup matches.

The BBC is thinking about the possibility of offering ‘vuvuzela free’ coverage via its red button after hundreds of complaints.

Fans say the droning sound of the plastic horns, which has been likened to the buzzing of millions of angry bees, is drowning out coverage and leaving them with aching eardrums.

Vuvuzelas can generate a drone of up to 144 decibels inside stadiums, which is louder than fireworks, a plane taking off or a rock concert.

Now the BBC is looking into providing ‘clean’ coverage, which would strip out most crowd noise.

A BBC spokesman said last night: ‘We have already taken steps to minimise the noise and are continuing to monitor the situation. If the vuvuzela continues to impact on audience enjoyment, we will look at what other options we can take to reduce the volume further.’

The BBC’s plans emerged after World Cup officials said yesterday that the vuvuzela will stay at the tournament, despite earlier claims that the horns could be banned.

PETALING JAYA: If Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ is rushing to bring to market high speed broadband (HSBB), its rival Time dotCom Bhd (TdC) is wasting no time in delivering fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) even though it is for one area in the Klang Valley initially.

This year fixed broadband players are all-out to launch their offerings as projects like the HSBB will be coming onstream.

TdC – a company that many thought could not be resurrected given its huge network problems and big losses – is trying to enter the market as soon as it can to establish a base before the incumbent player offers FTTH.

Even Jalenas Sdn Bhd, a company owned by High Speed Broadband Sdn Bhd, is working on providing FTTH in Kuantan this year.

Mont’ Kiara is TdC’s first stop and it will cover more areas in the Klang Valley and other areas in the country over time since it has a fibre-optice network spanning across the nation.

TdC will next Tuesday officially launch its FTTH offering to retail users in Mont’ Kiara and the transmission speed offered will be up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps), which is quite big, given the current offerings in the market place.

The pricing of the packages is still being worked out, said a company source.

This is the first FTTH commercial rollout even though TM is conducting trials for its HSBB in several areas in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bangsar, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam.

TdC, which offers up to 1 gigabit per second in data speed, has more than 10,000 corporate/enterprise clients in the country.

It has been servicing the retail market but this is the first FTTH offering, coming after the completion of a massive overhaul of the company.

While the offering will not be the scale of TM’s or even Maxis Communications Bhd’s, but under the leadership of CEO Afzal Abdul Rahim, TdC is making a serious effort to become a more meaningful player in the telecoms sector.

Maxis has been building its network to expand its fixed broadband offering to retail and corporate users while TM is extending to HSBB trial customers transmission speed of about 15Mbps that could go up to 50Mbps.
