[Advice Needed] MBA vs MBP 2020

Hi all.

About to decide where to burn my money at - the new MBA or new MBP. I specced them both to increase RAM and CPU, but I'm concerned about thermal throttling, etc etc. i.e if I'm shelling out an extra 2k, waiting longer to get the MBP since who the heck knows when it'll actually be available, I want to make the right decision.

I use my laptop mostly for work. Shit ton of Google Docs, Slides, Canva, Youtube tabs (most amount of energy is consumed by Chrome), Zoom, Slack, Whatsapp, and Spotify.

- I also do video recordings so not thrilled about the 720 webcam but whatever.
- I have steam but don't usually play on my laptop (have a gaming desktop) so gaming isn't a concern.
- I value portability (as light as possible) with high functionality.

So internet strangers, what should I do?

edit: part of the question is whether or not it's even worth it to max to an i7 given that it's unlikely to be able to keep running that for long periods of time due to the heating. i just want a really smooth, fast experience while keeping my bajillion apps open.

Hi everyone, in comparing between the 3 Subang campuses, which comes out on top?

Taylor's ranks better in terms of number of A's.

Sunway has an overall better reputation.

INTI... seems okay. Cheaper than the other two.

Does anyone study there? What's the class size like? Facilities? Experience? Anything that is a reason to go study there?

Information of universities, courses and career types in Malaysia is fragmented and difficult to curate and find. We have a wealth of information on LYN, and there's tons of other sites, but is there 'one site to rule them all'?

Like if I don't know at all what to study, where do I go?
If I have an idea but want to compare the same course against different universities, where do I go?
Where can find accurate course fees?
Also updated entry requirements / module subjects /pathways.

Do you guys have a site that can do all of that? If don't have, what kind of features should an education site have to be the best of the best? Maybe we can 'crowd-source' ideas to build it.

What to study after SPM?

I've been helping and counselling a lot of juniors so let me help ya'll out.

1. FORGET YOUR PASSIONS.

I know this sounds counterintuitive, but hear me out. If you're asking the question "actually, what am I passionate about ah?" then you haven't identified it yet, and staring at your computer screen isn't going to tell you what it is. If you already know, then you won't have a problem in deciding what you're going to pursue.

What does this mean for your studies right now? Well, it means you should take a more generic pre-university course so you buy yourself time to figure it out. This means courses like A Level (if you like studying and taking exams), AUSMAT/SAM/SACE (if you like more hands on course work and presentations), CIMP/CPU (if you want to study in US/Canada, have a good budget to spend on, and love coursework).

These courses are internationally recognised and give you the freedom to buy time to think about your degree after another 10-15 months.

However, if you already know your passions, then take a Foundation as it is more direct and faster. Take note that Foundation programmes are actually designed for the university it is administered from, thus students planning to go overseas for their Year 1 degree should not take this programme.

Also? Don't panic. You can figure out what drives and motivates you later. It'll come.

2. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS.

Chances are, your teachers, parents, friends and aunties are already busy telling you what course you should take, or which course is going to make you lots of money, or which course can get you the best kind of networks. They're not wrong, but they're not exactly right either. Start from their suggestions, and browse through courses.

You also need to be realistic, lah. Don't bother studying Medicine, Dentistry, or Pharmacy if you can't get B's in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. If you want to study Engineering, make sure you do well in Additional Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. You need to know what the entry requirements are. Generally, for most pre-u, you need at least 5Cs.

If your parents are struggling financially, don't lah choose the most expensive A Level course (it can range from 13,000 to 55,000 for the same course!).

What does this mean for your studies? Websites like unidigest.com have a full list of pre-university courses that makes it easier to have all the information in one place. Chances are, you'll get good ideas and narrow your options down based on the course pathways, fees, and campuses. Comparison websites like this always have 100% free education advisors and counsellors who will support you from "IDK what to study" to the application process.

3. ASK FOR HELP FROM THE RIGHT PEOPLE.

Don't choose a university because "it looks cool" or because all your friends are going there. Some schools are better science than others, some have outstanding design programmes even though they are smaller and 'less popular', some are really popular but have terrible lecturers and overcrowded classrooms.

Talk to education advisors or people in the industry - try to find non-bias parties, for example, agents (try JM Education, Study Excel, UniDigest, etc) instead of one particular university because universities have an obligation to sell only their programmes. Agents have more options for you, and don't charge. In fact, most of them help you choose the best choice because they get paid no matter where they send you. If you trust almost no one, talk to school counsellors - but do try to get them when it's not a busy time, as they may not be as updated to do research for you, or may have too many students (we really should pay our teachers better!).

More processor or more RAM?

Thinking of upgrading soon, (currently on MBA) and trying to decide with my limited budget and needs which one to go for. In this case, will the processor really make that much of a difference or is it better to go with the higher ram?

NOTE: The processors are all dual-core, so its just a matter of GHz and boost.

Or balance and do this? Or is that 0.2 processor upgrade not worth it?

MBP use: Keynote decks, Magazine editing work (unsure on InDesign atm), infographic creation (mostly web based i.e Piktochart), GIMP, WP webdev, server management, minimal coding.

How to decide where to study? First of all, there is a lack of information, and then you have to dig into the uni before getting the full picture. What do you guys use to make a decision?

Pre-u courses got so many, even if you narrow down to type of foundation, it still doesn't help to make a choice.

So, I did the stupid thing and spilled about 1 tablespoon of coffee on my keyboard. Powered down, upside down, turned off. Keys A-L is out, though data and laptop is working, suggesting that keyboard circuit is jacked but logic board OK. And while Machines staff are great, they take 21 freaking days and cost a bomb. As it's a relatively small procedure, can anyone recommend a good repair guy/gal?

Hi everyone. I need a bit of help.

Last night my car touched the car in front of me due a motorbike too close behind me. My rubber bumper touched his car - but there is no damage that can be seen. You can only feel a slight roughness when you touch. What should I do?

Will a polish fix it?

He's being a royal arse about it too, I apologized, and then sent him a message that I'd find out about what to do since there isn't much I can do.. I mean there is no damage, so um, all I can think is to polish it. He is pretty rude in the way he talks on SMS and I'm thinking:

1. Can I only get them to polish that specific part? How much will it cost to say polish the area of an A4 paper?

2. If you were in this situation, dealing with people like this, what would you do?

I mean people have grazed my car too, and where there is no structural or visible damage, I just let it go. I don't expect everyone to be nice of course, but this guy is being a real ###.

What instant coffee packs would you recommend? Is Sbux Ready Brew really the best instant coffee?

On a side note, what do you think makes a good cup of coffee?

For me, it's the richness of the taste, the aftertaste and a pleasant smell.
