A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Tonga, prompting a tsunami warning for the Pacific island country.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor hit about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the main island in the early morning hours of Monday local time.

The quake was at a depth of 16 km (10 miles).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert saying hazardous waves could be possible cor coasts located within 300 kilometers (185 miles) of the epicenter.

No reports of damage were immediately available.

Tonga is a country in Polynesia made up of 171 islands with a population of a little more than 100,000 people, most of whom live on the main island of Tongatapu.

It is more than 3,500 kilometers (2,000 miles) off of Australia's east coast.

Sunday’s earthquake follows the 7.7 magnitude quake that struck central Myanmar on Friday and also sent powerful jolts into neighbouring China and Thailand.

A former secretary of the finance division of the Youth and Sports Ministry was jailed for 15 years and fined over RM283 million over a corruption and money laundering case involving over RM38 million.
The Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today convicted accused Otman Arshad over 96 charges for offences allegedly taking place between 2012 and 2015.
Otman was charged with 32 counts of abuse of power and with submitting false claims involving RM38.4 million.

KUCHING: Sarawak will not increase the price of the electricity tariff, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said Sarawak has an advantage in terms of electricity supply sources, namely the state’s hydroelectric dams.

“Our electricity or energy can be said to one of our strengths — our tariffs are not high, even though some (other places) want to raise the price of electricity, we will not do so. We will remain with the old price,” he said.

He made this call in his speech at a dinner held in conjunction with the 24th annual general meeting of the Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) Sarawak branch here on Friday night.

Abang Johari said the increase in electricity tariffs would also indirectly affect investments in the state.

“If the electricity tariff is high, investors will not come and contractors will also have difficulty in paying high bills.

“The addition of hydroelectric dam projects in Sarawak that are currently under construction such as the Trusan Dam in Lawas and Baleh Dam in Kapit will increase the source of electricity in the state,” he said.

On Friday, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said that domestic users in the Peninsula with a monthly electricity consumption of 1,500 kilowatt-hours and below will not experience an increase in electricity tariffs following an adjustment from July 1 and Dec 31 this year.

Number of uber-rich people increasing in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: The number of Malaysians who are categoried as "ultra wealthy" is rising, according to The Wealth Report.

In its report, Malaysia was ranked as one of the top 10 fastest growing ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) markets, together with Singapore and Indonesia.

UHNW individuals (UHNWIs) are people with a high amount of wealth, at least US$30mil (RM138bil) worth in investable assets.

In the Asia Pacific (Apac) region, which encompasses both South-East Asia and East Asia, the UHNW population experienced substantial growth of nearly 51% from 2018 to 2022.

Although growth is forecast to slow to 40% over the next five years (2022-2027), the Apac region still leads the world in wealth creation.

The Wealth Report is published by real estate agency Knight Frank Property Hub.

Knight Frank Property Hub associate director Dominic Heaton-Watson said Malaysia was a standout performer with significant growth in the five years leading to 2022.

"There may still be a great deal of uncertainty on the horizon, but Malaysian UHNWI are set to capitalise on a diverse range of sectors including medical, logistics, tech, hospitality, finance, and real estate," he said in a statement.

Knight Frank Asia-Pacific Head of Research Christine Li said Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia were three of 10 markets that saw the fastest-growing UHNWIs globally despite facing a 5.7% population decrease in 2022.

The top 10 countries for UHNWIs' growth from 2021 to 2022 are UAE (18.1%), Tanzania (13.9%), Brazil (11.2%), Nigeria (10.7%), Saudi Arabia (10.4%), Malaysia (9.4%), Indonesia (9.0%), Singapore (6.9%), Turkey (6.2%), Canada (6%).

KUALA LUMPUR: Public Bank Bhd's net profit grew 8.2 per cent to RM6.12 billion in 2022, after taking into account the one-off impact of prosperity tax.

The bank's pre-tax profit of RM8.83 billion crossed the RM8 billion mark for the first time, representing a growth of 19.9 per cent from RM7.37 billion posted in 2021.

Secretlab titan softweave vs new Dxracer master

Guys, I need opinion between this 2 chairs. I have 2 dxracer in the past mainly Racing & drifting series. The built actually solid but drifting series the PU cracked. So PU is big no.

1. Secretlab titan softweave - I think this one no need introduction because it has been in market for awhile? The lumbar support seem like built in and need to control it manually. Say push for max support, does it really support? Softweave wont crack lol.

2. DXracer master series - Ok this is new to the market. It has better tech like swappable cushion mesh (buy need buy separately) and also footrest (also buy separately). The thing is, it use microfiber nappa leather. I mean wth is microfiber nappa? The price currently on preorder is RM1899. The lumbar support look fine. But if this has risk getting cracked like PU leather, I would just get titan weave.

Sarawak introduce QR-coded wristband for MCO

Sarawak introduces QR-coded wristbands to travellers to track those required to undergo quarantine, PUIs.

KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee will be issuing QR-coded wristbands to visitors entering Sarawak to ensure that the authorities can monitor their whereabouts during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The wristbands, engineered by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), will be divided into categories before they are handed out, which are person-under-investigation (PUI) or those required to undergo a home quarantine, which is the 14-day Stay Home Notice category, due to the spread of Covid-19.

The PUI category will have two sub-categories: Home Quarantine and Hospital Quarantine. On a twice-daily basis, wearers are required to report their situation by scanning their wristband’s QR code to submit a set of information.

Data collated will allow the State Disaster Management Committee to make informed decisions as well as to conduct random checks on the wearers.

The wearers’ location will enable the Disaster Management Committee to establish hotspots – a key strategy to isolate further spread of the disease.

Variations of such tracker systems have been deployed in China, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong where the data collected was crucial to manage the shape and evolution of the virus.

“We are confident that this system will make the task of managing the outbreak effectively and in a timely manner given the vastness of Sarawak. With the time frame given, the development team has made tremendous achievements within a 3-day period to come up with such a solution,” said SMA general manager Dr Zaidi Razak in a statement issued today.

The State Disaster Management Committee had earlier enlisted SMA to develop a digital system to track any person who is undergoing self-quarantine for Covid-19.

BMW F30 3 Series launched

The sixth-generation BMW 3 Series was revealed to the media this morning at the Mines Convention Centre. Codenamed F30, the latest compact sports sedan from Munich is available in three variants here – 335i, 328i and 320d.
The two petrol powered units can be had in ‘Luxury’ or ‘Sport’ trim lines. ‘Modern’ is not offered here, and the 320d gets no such choice, appearing quite basic in spec compared to its petrol siblings.

The F30 range starts from RM268,800 for the 320d, moving on to RM309,800 for the 328i. The range topping 335i will set you back RM488,800. All prices are on the road, without insurance, but with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive.
Like how BMW Malaysia always does it, the initial batch of around 450 cars will be CBU imported units. It will take around three months from now for the CKD programme to start. The locally assembled units should be more competitively priced, with more kit for the money, but CKD prices have not been finalised as we speak
