Overload from Speaker to Handphone ?

To all handphone Gurus,

The last time i have this experience with my Apacer MP3 Player, that i plug into a set of speakers for output. so apparently i cranked the volume too high on the speakers, then the MP3 player just died. i suspect that the player could not take the output....

So what i am asking is, is there any way to prevent this to happening, if i were to plug my N95 to speakers and avoid from being overloaded ? i dunno if this term is correct or not

Appreciate the help from all the gurus.
