A team of doctors who swallowed Lego and timed how long it took to pass through their bowels say the results of their research should reassure concerned parents.

In a paper published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, six researchers from Australia and the UK swallowed the head of a Lego figure – roughly 10mm by 10mm – in the “noble tradition of self-experimentation”.

Toy parts are the second most common foreign object that children swallow, and frequently cause anxiety among parents, but usually pass in a matter of days without pain or ill-effect.

For the special Christmas edition of the journal, which frequently features quirky studies, the team decided to put their own bodies on the line. “[We] could not ask anything of our test subjects that we would not undertake themselves,” they wrote in their paper.

They developed their own metrics: the Stool Hardness and Transit (Shat) score and the Found and Retrieved Time (Fart) score.

The Fart score – how many days it took the Lego to pass through the bowels – was between 1.1 days and three days, with an average of 1.7 days.

Using the Shat score, the researchers also found the consistency of their stools did not change. They compared Shat and Fart scores to see if looser stools caused quicker retrieval but found no correlation.

One of the report’s authors, Grace Leo, said she hoped the report made people smile while also reassuring parents. She said parents should seek medical advice if children swallow things that are sharp, longer than 5cm, wider than 2.5cm, magnets, coins, button batteries or are experiencing pain.

But most small, smooth, plastic objects will pass easily.

If parents are uncertain, they should seek medical attention, Leo added.

“I can’t remember if it was pre or post-breakfast,” she said. “But we all ingested our Lego between 7am and 9am in our own time zone, with a glass of water.

“For most people it was passed after one to three stools. But for poor [researcher Damien Roland], he didn’t find his, so we made him search every stool for two weeks. I passed it on the first stool afterwards and was very relieved.”

None of the researchers experienced any symptoms or pain due to the Lego inside them. But Leo said people should not replicate the experiment at home.

The report noted that it was possible children’s bowels would react differently but there was “little evidence to support this”.

“If anything, it is likely that objects would pass faster in a more immature gut,” they wrote.

Leo said: “Hopefully there is more conversation and awareness of foreign bodies, and a reassurance for parents that, for small foreign bodies, they aren’t advised to search through the stool.

“If it’s a small Lego head, you don’t need to go poking through their stool. That should save parents some heartache, unless that Lego head is dearly loved.”

A man in Oregon who led police on chase through the streets of Happy Valley, ended up with a broken leg after he jumped out of a rolling car and was hit by his still-rolling vehicle.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's office said a Happy Valley patrol officer responded to a call about a theft in progress Monday night, when he spotted suspect Isaiah John Gellatly, 31, inside a parked Honda Accord lying back in the fully-reclined driver's seat.

Officers approached the vehicle and shined a light into the Honda. That's when the driver sat up, put the car in drive, and took off. Police began to chase after Gellatly, radioing ahead for assistance.

"He repeatedly blew through stop signs and crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic during the high-speed pursuit," according to a police statement about the incident Monday night.

Other officers responding to the call for help, placed spike strips in Gellatly's path, puncturing one of the Honda's tires. Only, that wasn't enough to stop the burglary suspect.

Despite the punctured tires, the suspect kept driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed until he turned into a business complex. That's when he began having trouble controlling the vehicle and hit curbs and a retaining wall, and even made contact with the bumper of a pursuing police car.

Gellatly then tried to get out of the still-moving vehicle and allegedly opened the driver's side door and jumped clear. While still running alongside the vehicle, he attempted to cut in front of it, but didn't make it and ended up being pinned under the Honda.

"Gellatly then attempted to cut in front of his vehicle around the same time it crashed into a tree and building wall," the police statement said.

Police caught up with the suspect and took him into custody. The suspect's vehicle was found to contain several items believed to be stolen, including a tennis racket, a ping-pong paddle, designer sunglasses, and even a Schwinn scooter.

Gellately was arrested on suspicion of attempting to elude police, reckless driving, unlawful entry into a motor vehicle and theft.

SCIENTISTS are calling for “no selfie zones” after the incredible number of “selficides” was revealed in a new study.

Between 2011 and 2017, 259 people have been accidentally killed in all kinds of different ways while taking selfies all over the world.

A new study found that 259 people died in just six years while taking selfies in tourist hot spots around the world

The most common ways that people die while taking selfies is by drowning, being hit by traffic or falling.

And it happens overwhelmingly to men, with nearly three quarters of the victims being male (153).

Eight people were killed by animals while taking selfies and another 16 were electrocuted in the same period.

The country where most of the deaths happened was India which accounted for around half of all the selfie-related deaths, closely followed by Russia, the USA and Pakistan.

Dr Agam Bansal at the India Institute of Medical Sciences led the research.

He said: “Selfies are themselves not harmful, but the human behaviour that accompanies selfies is dangerous.

“Individuals need to be educated regarding certain risky behaviours and risky places where selfies should not be taken.

“‘No selfie zones’ areas should be declared across many tourist areas, [especially] places such as water bodies, mountain peaks, and over tall buildings to decrease the incidence of selfie-related deaths.”

In one incident last year, 48 people were injured while taking selfies in front of a burning bakery in India despite firefighters’ warnings to move away.

And earlier this year, a British tourist and her Australian boyfriend fell 100ft to their deaths taking a selfie while overlooking a beach in Portugal.

Similarly, Sarita Rammahesh Chouhan took a selfie just seconds before she fell to her death taking another in front of her family in India.

I got not sympathy for them. Its fucking stupid. You want to arrive that early, you should have booked to stay for that night as well. You cannot arrive 1 night early and than ask to stay in their lobby. That's never a reasonable request as other travelers will just exploit that and the lobby will be full of similar sohais who want to save on 1 night's fee. Few hours, can. Most lodgings allow that. Overnight? You dun cibai lar.

You really that cheap, stay in the airport. They're used to people waiting for extended periods there.

Maybe the police could have handled it better but they still deserve to be ejected from the hostel.

Sweden and China have become embroiled in an unlikely diplomatic row after three Chinese tourists were thrown out of a hostel in Stockholm in an argument over check-in times.

Videos showing what China has described as the “brutal mistreatment” of a man and his elderly parents by Swedish police have been viewed more than 100 million people on social media, sparking a heated debate in the Chinese blogosphere.

The incident began innocently enough on 2 September, when a family identified as the Zengs arrived at the Generator Hostel in Stockholm one night before they had booked to stay.

The Zengs reportedly asked to wait out the night on the sofas in the hostel’s lobby, but were told they couldn’t and were asked to leave. When they objected, hostel staff called the police – at which point videos of the incident show Zeng being carried out by two officers, screaming in English: “This is killing, this is killing.”

Reactions on social media have been divided between those who question the Swedish police’s handling of the situation, and those who criticise the behaviour of the Zeng family. At one point in the videos, filmed by passers-by, all three are lying prone on the pavement calling out for “help” as the police officers stand around looking bemused.

The Chinese government, however, is taking the matter very seriously indeed. Two statements have been issued by the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, the first a safety alert warning would-be visitors to Sweden of incidents involving theft, robbery and poor treatment at the hands of the Swedish police.

The second statement ups the ante, explaining that China is “deeply appalled and angered by what happened and strongly condemns the behaviour of the Swedish police”. It claims: “What the police had done severely endangered the life and violated the basic human rights of the Chinese citizens.”

Representations have been made, it says, to the Swedish government both in Stockholm and in Beijing, and the Chinese government “cannot understand why the Swedish side has not given us any feedback”.

Sweden eventually issued a formal response, two days after the first Chinese embassy statement, saying it was aware of the incident and that a special prosecutor would be appointed “to determine whether the police have actually committed negligence or illegal acts”.

That appears not to go far enough for China’s liking, however. An editorial published on Sunday night by the state-run CGTN website said the incident called into doubt Sweden’s self-appointed role “as an arbiter of human rights”.

The police’s actions “raised questions over Sweden's ability to protect human rights and conduct law enforcement in a civilised manner”, it said.

Some observers on Weibo – China’s closest equivalent to Twitter – have linked the dramatic escalation to the fact that the Dalai Lama visited Sweden last week. The Tibetan spiritual leader lives in exile in India, and is viewed by Beijing as a hostile separatist.

“The Dalai Lama visits Sweden and the foreign ministry uses this incident as a pretext to make a fuss,” wrote one user on Weibo, according to a translation by the The Guardian.

Another blogger, Ju Baiyu, wrote a post on WeChat comparing the tourists’ behaviour to that of “self-indulgent” Chinese shoppers who kick off their shoes and go to sleep in the beds in Ikea showrooms. “There may be 10 billion sofas in the world,” the commentator writes, “but only the sofas in your home belong to you.”

A spokesperson for the Generator Hostels chain said the company was still working to establish exactly what occurred in the exchange between the three Chinese tourists, hostel staff and the police.

“Our priority is always the health and wellbeing of our guests, and as far as we are concerned the Chinese tourists were our guests,” the spokesperson told The Independent. “We want to express how saddened we are by this situation, and are willing to work with both parties, the tourists and the police, to work out what happened here.”

Will there ever been an agreement with Astro to bring the new improved speeds over? Cos right now, its both cheaper and faster if I split my Astro and Maxis plans at the price of losing Astro over fiber which is nice for when it storms here.

Since GDC stands for the Game Developers Conference we’ve spent most of our time here checking out video games specifically, not tech in general. However, we made exception for one pitch that seemed so crazy we had to check it out in person for ourselves. Startup Noveto Systems promises audio technology that lets you and only you hear what you want to be hearing. And our demo made us believers in this “headphones without headphones” technology.

The novelty of the product really does need to be experienced to be believed but I’ll try to describe it. I’m in the loud show floor of the Moscone Center. In front of me is a monitor playing Star Wars Battlefront II. From where I’m standing I don’t hear it. But once I step into the right spot all of a sudden the sounds of the game, from the lasers to the lightsaber clashes, are all around me. I’m not wearing any special device and there is only one speaker in front of me, but it was like I magically stepped into a world of personal private surround sound. And when I stepped out of it everything immediately went silent.

So how does it actually work? First off my face and ears were being tracked the whole time with a standard camera. That data is then used by Noveto System’s custom software and speaker hardware to deliver the positional audio and binaural separation whenever I was in view. I could hear a shaking box of candy swirl around my head.

But beyond show floor tricks like that there are real practical applications for such cool functionality that only requires a few pieces. You really could just set this up and listen to whatever you want all around you safe in the knowledge that anyone outside your comfort zone won’t have a clue.

As a startup, Noveto Systems is still trying to develop the technology. Throughout this year the plan is to send the SDK kits out to other developers. But at least during this GDC demo the product speaks for itself. I already want to crawl back inside my sound bubble.

Do lesbians have better sex than heterosexual women? Yes. Yes. Oh my God, yes! Women who sleep with women repeatedly report higher levels of sexual satisfaction in surveys and studies than women who have sex with men.

A Public Health England survey of more than 7,000 women last month found that half of respondents aged between 25 and 34 did not enjoy their sex life. The percentage dropped to 29% among 55- to 64-year-olds, suggesting that sex for women gets better with age.

Sue Mann, the public health consultant involved in the research, said: “Enjoying a fulfilling sex life is important for women’s mental and emotional wellbeing.” This is true, of course. Bizarrely, though, when asked about the breakdown of women’s sexualities in the study, PHE said it had not collected this information from respondents; instead, results were categorised by location, deprivation, ethnicity, religion, marital status and age.

But previous global research suggests that women who have sex with women are probably more likely to be in the half that did not report sexual dissatisfaction. A 2014 study by the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that lesbians orgasmed 75% of the time during sex, compared with 61% for heterosexual women. The sexual orientation of men, however, did not appear to have much effect on their rates of orgasm – gay men reported coming 85% of the time, while for heterosexual men it was 86%.

A much larger study in 2017 of 53,000 Americans by the Kinsey Institute recorded slightly different numbers, but with the same trends. In this instance, lesbians reported coming 86% of the time during sex, as opposed to 65% for straight women. Straight men said they orgasmed 95% of the time.

So, where is lesbian sex going right for women where heterosexual sex is going wrong? “It’s simple,” says Matty Silver, a sexual health therapist based in Australia. “Lesbian women know where their clitoris is and know what to do with it to get an orgasm. They don’t need to show their lesbian partner what to do, which means their sexual satisfaction is higher.

“There are many men who believe they can give their partners an orgasm by just having intercourse,” she adds. “That only happens for 20% of all women. They often need clitoral stimulation, or oral sex, for it to happen. It is one of the reasons that many heterosexual women fake their orgasm.”

Silver says lesbian couples rarely visit her for counselling relating to sexual issues, but rather for general relationship queries, as with any couple.

Of course, anyone approaching sex for the first time will encounter a learning curve, but the anatomical familiarity of a woman sleeping with a woman rings true as integral to high levels of satisfaction.

Jessica Burgess, a 26-year-old playwright based in Brighton who has slept with men and women (and a cis man who then identified as genderqueer), says: “Women are at a huge advantage when it comes to knowing how to make other women feel good. They’ve done it before to themselves, numerous times. They know what a clit is and they have realistic expectations about how quickly women are able to reach orgasm.”

In 2008, 92% of female respondents to a survey said they masturbate – two-thirds of them up to three times a week. This is a leap from 74% in 1993 and 62% in 1953, when women were probably lying, or abiding by sexually repressive codes.

Alongside the sexologist Betty Dodson, Carlin Ross runs a feminist-centred sexual education charity with the tagline: “Better Orgasms. Better World.” Their website features tips, sex-toy reviews, workshops on overcoming negative body image and pleasure anxiety, and Betty’s sketches of the six different “vulva styles” (variations include “baroque”, “gothic”, “Renaissance” and “modern”). The key to sexual satisfaction, whether same-sex or heterosexual, is masturbation, Ross says.

“The absolute best way to improve your sex life is to improve your masturbation practice,” she says. “When we know how to give ourselves an orgasm, we know how to communicate our sexual needs to our partners. It seems counterintuitive, but improving our relationship with ourselves improves our relationships with others – and our sexual gratification.

“What this means is practising consciousness masturbation. Blocking out an hour for ourselves. Getting some good natural oil that will increase sensation. Touching our lubricated genitals and then practising clitoral stimulation and vaginal penetration at the same time.”

But it is not just about getting the practice in. Jessica says that women tend to be better at listening and communicating in bed (and perhaps outside of the bedroom, too – it is not clear whether those abundant news stories about women speaking thousands more words a day than men stand up, but understanding and empathy are areas in which women excel). There is a strong emotional connection between women, too.

Alice Martin, a 20-year-old trans lesbian, says the same. “As a woman having sex with another woman, it’s a completely mind-bending experience. The mix of care, love, romance, pleasure, emotion and intensity is something that I never experienced with men.”

One of the biggest culprits for this may be the amount of pornography made for and marketed to straight men. A headline in the Daily Telegraph last year declared that “All men watch porn”, after a university study in the US. “We started our research seeking men in their 20s who had never consumed pornography,” said Prof Simon Louis Lajeunesse at the time. “We couldn’t find any.”

According to the study, 90% of pornography consumption was online, with 10% of men going to video stores (who knew they still existed?). In 2015, more than 2bn web searches were pornography-related and pornography sites are often measured as more popular than social networks. It is not only heterosexual men who watch pornography, but the women I speak to who have slept with women and men note pornography’s negative influence in their experience of heterosexual sex. These women do not watch lesbian-categorised pornography because, leaving aside an emerging market for pornography made exclusively by women, lesbian pornography is mostly aimed at men.

Burgess does not watch pornography precisely for this reason. In fact, in real life, there is a psychological advantage that comes with same-sex activity, in that you are making an active choice to own your sexuality. A STOMACH-churning video shows a woman drinking a cup of her dog’s fresh urine while claiming it has cured her acne.

American animal lover Lynn Lew, whose face is caked in heavy make up during the clip, says that lapping up her mutt’s warm body waste had helped give her skin a natural glow.

In the disgusting footage, she also incorrectly claims that drinking canine body fluids can help cure cancer.

She said: “Many of you have asked me how I always look so good, how my makeup always looks so perfect, or how I always have this natural glow.”

The woman then holds a plastic cup under her dog as the hound cocks its leg against a tree and relieves itself.

After filling up the container with frothy pee, she downs the liquid and even licks the rim of the cup.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The Najib administration paid out 88 per cent of RM9.4 billion for two oil-related projects despite not having obtained the necessary rights from oil giant Petronas or the land required, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng disclosed today.

Lim was referring to the Multi-Product Pipeline (MPP) and Trans-Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP) projects, which was recently discovered to have only had been completed by 13 per cent by the Chinese firm contracted to do so.

“Worse, we have since discovered that SSER has failed to secure any rights from Petronas as required by law to lay the pipes for MPP, and has also failed to acquire the necessary land in Sabah to do the same for TSGP,” he said in a statement today.

Lim was referring to the Finance Ministry’s subsidiary Suria Strategic Energy Resources Sdn Bhd (SSER), which had awarded the two projects worth RM9.4 billion to China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau (CPPB).

“Despite such shocking revelations, Datuk Seri Najib still claims that all the necessary processes, procedures and laws had been complied with in relation to the signing of these two pipeline projects,” he added, referring to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who was also the finance minister when the alleged scandal took place.

Last Tuesday, Lim revealed the discovery of the new RM9.4 billion scandal that was hidden away in the Finance Ministry’s “red” files that were inaccessible by even the auditor-general.

The scandal revolves around both the RM5.35 billion MPP project for a 600km-long multi-product petroleum pipeline linking Melaka and Port Dickson to Jitra, and also the RM4.06 billion TSGP project in Sabah to build a 662km-long gas pipeline from Kimanis Gas Terminal to Sandakan and Tawau.

Lim said that RM8.3 billion or 88 per cent of the RM9.4 billion value has been disbursed, even though the MPP and TSGP projects were recorded as having only 14.5 per cent and 11.4 per cent of the works completed by the end of March 2018.

These completion rates have also yet to be verified and audited, Lim said.

Today, Lim continued to question Najib over the alleged RM9.4 billion scandal, claiming that the latter had “deliberately refused to respond” to the key question of why the RM8.3 billion payment was made despite only an average of 13 per cent work completion.

“Why did he permit such disbursement to be made within the first year of a three-year contract?” Lim asked.

Lim today said it has since been discovered that the then-minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan had for some reason always presented the SSER projects and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project for the Cabinet’s approval in the same Cabinet paper.

“This raises red flags as the ECRL and the SSER projects are vastly different in nature and business, involving different companies, contractors and geography, even if they were financed by the same China EXIM Bank,” he said.
