Chinese car scored 5 star in Euro NCAP

Generalizing that chinese cars are unsafe?
think again...
I personally felt they are the next to watch out for, after Korean brands..

QUOTE

The Qoros 3 just scored a five-star crash safety rating in the Euro NCAP test. Even more shockingly, the car achieved the highest overall performance of all vehicles assessed so far in 2013, making it one of the safest vehicles ever tested by the Europeans.

Sauce

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE

China has been producing homegrown cars like there's no tomorrow in recent years, but their poor safety ratings have traditionally kept them out of American and European markets. But a crash test victory by the Qoros 3 Sedan could mean that's about to change.

The Qoros 3 just scored a five-star crash safety rating in the Euro NCAP test. Even more shockingly, the car achieved the highest overall performance of all vehicles assessed so far in 2013, making it one of the safest vehicles ever tested by the Europeans.

It's hard to see this as anything other than a huge win for both Qoros, a new and upcoming automaker, as well as Chinese cars in general. Just a few years ago, their safety and quality ratings were considered laughable by Western standards. When Brilliance tried to export their B6 sedan in 2007, it scored only one star in a German test. Now we have a Chinese car that ranked among the best tested in Europe this year.P

In other words, the Chinese are getting there. You may not be able to buy Chinese cars in the U.S. at the moment (besides a few oddballs like the Coda) but that's going to change eventually.P

The Qoros 3 went on sale in Slovakia this month with a base price of about 16,000 Euro or $21,600. Volume sales in China are set to begin next year.

Wiki : Qoros

Wiki : Qoros 3

So, it is time now to take over from Petronas, since the company decided in 2010, to exit completely from all engine development activities.

“Proton Holdings, through Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd, is taking over seven engine technologies with 117 technology patents from Petronas,” he told reporters after the Assets and Technologies Acquisition Agreement signing here today.

The exchange of documents was witnessed by the adviser to Petronas and Proton, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Khamil said Proton expects mass production of the new engines to begin in the third quarter of next year, with Proton cars given priority.

“We have undertaken testing with the Proton Exora and Preve. Proton cars will be given the priority,” he added.

He said after Proton establishes itself as a successful engine maker, the company is open to doing business with any other car company or original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The sports car brand under Proton, Lotus, is also being considered to be installed with the new engines from the Petronas technologies and expertise.

“Proton now has the Campro engine, which we are continuing to improve on.

“With this agreement, we have a new type of engine which is environmental friendly, while providing a lightweight solution,” Khamil said, adding that Proton customers would have better choices in future.

Khamil said Proton will honour all commitments or deals done by Petronas prior to the acquisition.

Petronas, through Petronas Technology Ventures, had previously entered into a deal with a China-based company to start the mass production of engines in the third quarter of 2013.

Meanwhile, together with the technologies, Proton has also acquired a Petronas facility in Bangi and technological equipment from the national oil giant.

“Two personnel from Petronas have joined us. Talks are being held with Petronas to secure the remaining manpower of 60,” he said. — Bernama

E01 anyone?

New turbo engine for Proton’s Exora starting 2011

Sauce

QUOTE

SUBANG JAYA, Sept 23 — Proton Holdings Bhd will soon begin upgrading high-selling vehicle models with a new turbocharged engine developed in collaboration with wholly owned subsidiary Lotus Group International Ltd.

The national carmaker will begin mass production of the 1.6-litre Higher Performance Engine (HPE) — which boasts performance equivalent to that of a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine — by year-end for use in its Exora and future Persona models.

“As you know, a lot of our customers today... want more power,” Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said, adding that the HPE will open up new opportunities in the export market where Proton is looking to compete in a higher chassis class segment.

Proton saw increased domestic demand push its net profit for the quarter ended June 30 to RM84.7 million, up 55.2 per cent from the same period last year.

Stronger than expected local demand for Saga, Persona and Exora core models saw domestic passenger car sales volume rise by 17.4 per cent to 40,908 units, bumping revenue from RM1.9 billion to RM2.3 billion.

Malaysia’s second most popular car marque is also currently developing hybrid and electric engines with British company Frazer-Nash Research Ltd, South Korea’s LG and its very own Lotus.

“We’re not dependent on one. We’re going through a journey of acquiring and understanding and hopefully, one day soon, we will be able to master the technology,” Syed Zainal Abidin said. “We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. I think it’s bad for a company like us.”

He declined to give a timeline for the project but revealed that Proton will soon build a test fleet of at least 30 vehicles for use by the government as it embarked on stage two of development.

“Once it is done, it will give us the ability to get better results and reliability,” he said.

Proton chairman Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh explained that such extensive testing was needed to ensure everything was in order before Proton’s hybrid and electric engines could be rolled out commercially.

“When you’re talking of new products, the technology is new and we have to make sure when we do commercialisation of new technologies, we have to test everything,” he said.

“Anything which is in the R&D stage will have a lot of flexibility in terms of the timing in terms of its launch.”

Read the news here

http://paultan.org/2010/08/24/honda-civic-...on-coming-soon/

QUOTE

There’s something very interesting happening over at Honda Japan’s website – the 8th generation Honda Civic have been removed from all the car line-up pages. The only reference to the Civic can now only be found under ‘Archives’ area. The page linked in the previous line lists the 8th generation as having a lifespan of 2007/09 to 2010/08! The Civic Hybrid based on the 8th generation car remains to be listed.

What does this mean? Only one thing – Honda is likely going to unveil the 9th generation Honda Civic very soon, since they’ve sort of ‘phased out’ the 8th generation non-hybrid sedan in Japan. Thanks to reader Calvin/lanarshad@8GCC for the tip!

So whoever planning a Civic, hold your horses..

Government scraps tiered fuel subsidies for simple

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — The government is looking at simpler ways to subsidise fuel for consumers after quietly scrapping the proposed tiered fuel subsidies scheduled for May 1 due to its complexity.

Industry sources said Putrajaya made the decision “recently” after complaints that the new subsidy system which uses MyKad for petrol purchase could be a hassle for consumers and petrol dealers apart from causing congestion at fuel stations.

“Oil industry executives have been asked to stop implementing the tiered subsidy system as the government has stopped it,” an industry source told The Malaysian Insider.

A consultant working on the programme confirmed the move, saying “the decision was made fairly recently.”

“It was just too complex and unwieldy,” he admitted to The Malaysian Insider, referring to the tiered subsidy system.

Under the programme that was being handled by Malayan Banking Berhad, motorists had to register using their Mykad to be eligible for some subsidy for one vehicle from May 1.

However, petrol dealers complained of additional costs despite making only 12.19 sen per litre for petrol and seven sen per litre for diesel. RON95 petrol is currently sold at RM1.80 a litre, RON97 and diesel at RM2.05 and RM1.70 a litre respectively. Shell is the only retailer selling the premium RON 97 Shell V Racing at an unsubsidised price of RM2.38 a litre.

The government has never revealed the tiered fuel subsidy system but went only as far to say that foreigners would not be eligible for subsidised prices. Fuel prices in Malaysia are cheaper than neighbours Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

Foreign motorists are only allowed to buy fuel up to 20 litres within 50km of the borders except for the unsubsidised premium Shell V Racing petrol.

“Now the authorities will find another way to implement subsidies without burdening the public and the petrol dealers,” the industry source added.

There is speculation that the government will raise retail prices by 10 sen in the short-term while mulling proposals for a better subsidy system. Global oil prices have steadily risen and are now at US$79 (RM269) a barrel.

In 2007, the authorities raised retail prices until they peaked at RM2.70 a litre leading to widespread protests and contributed to the ruling Barisan Nasional’s historic losses in Election 2008. It is learnt that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is keen to avoid protests that helped drive predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi out of office.

This is not the first time that the Najib Administration has pulled back an unpopular move before it is implemented. Last December He retracted an unpopular 5 per cent Real Property Gains Tax (RPGT) Budget 2010 proposal for properties sold after five years.

Businessmen complained the move was unfair as it the RPGT was meant to cool down speculation in the property market, not tax those who are genuinely selling after holding their properties for a reasonable amount of time.

For the petrol subsidies, Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) president Datuk Hashim Othman anticipated a longer time to process transactions as biometrics have to verify the vehicle owner’s identity through thumbprint scanning and this could lead to possible congestion at the petrol stations.

“Experts in the field may say it is applicable but people on the ground are worried that the thumbprint scan, which is similar to the practice in the airport, may delay transactions and create congestion at petrol stations,” The Star quoted him as saying this week.

Hashim had said the government was still negotiating the quota of fuel subsidy that each car owner would be entitled to.

“The idea to give fuel subsidy to deserving people is good but we are worried that the system may be complicated and cannot address arising problems.”

Deputy Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe, when met at the Perak Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Chinese New Year open house on Monday, said her ministry was still gathering feedback on the matter from the people.

Source:

http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.p...r-simpler-ways-

Car: Wira 1.3m 1997
problem: the temp will shoot up near redline when i'm crusing around 110km/h @ highway, and back to normal when i drive @ 80/90 kmh or come to a complete stop. i've just recently changed my radiator(old 1 bocor). the new 1 is aluminium type, filled with coolant + water. also installed a new thermostat cause the old 1 kong, and the previous owner just let the water circulate without any thermostat.

Sifus, what are the possibilities that are causing this problem?
i have no problem during traffic jam/ short distance drive. if i rev it hard or cruise on highway, then i will see the temp shooting up.

Canon to use CMOS sensors for compact camera

QUOTE

Thanks to Jeff for the heads up on this, according to an article posted yesterday by Reuters, Canon is to invest 55 billion Yen ($451 million) in a new CMOS production factory at its existing site in the Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo. The interesting snippet in this news article comes from the following statement: "The CMOS chips will be used in both single lens reflex (SLR) models as well as in some compact models. Canon's compact cameras have to date used a different type of image sensor called a charge-coupled device (CCD)." This is interesting from an image quality point of view but will also be big news for Canon's existing sensor suppliers such as Sony.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0707/070715canoncmoscompact.asp

good news for future canon buyers, and bad news for sony (as a supplier of CCD sensors)
