Hadi calls for abolition of ‘colonial laws’ to make Syariah rule supreme in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has called for the abolition of laws he described as colonial legacies, alleging that these were obstacles to the unfettered implementation of Syariah law in Malaysia.

In the statement, titled “Merdeka: Hapus Undang-Undang Penjajah Yang Sekat Pelaksanaan Islam” (”Independence: Abolish Colonial Laws That Obstruct the Implementation of Islam”), the Marang MP argued that true independence cannot be realised while laws inherited from British rule continue to limit Islam’s position above man-made legislation.

“Colonial-legacy laws must be abolished to ensure the true meaning of independence can be fully realised,” Hadi said in the statement.

“In particular, laws that prevent Islam from occupying its noble position above man-made laws not sanctioned by Allah SWT, due to their many weaknesses that spread wrongdoing, must be removed.”

Hadi singled out several statutes for criticism, chief among them the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355), which caps Syariah court sentencing at three years’ jail, a RM5,000 fine and six strokes of whipping — a limit known as the “3:5:6” formula introduced in a 1984 amendment.

He also referenced the Civil Law Act 1956 and the division of powers under the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution, which restricts state legislatures to enacting only religious offences under the State List while criminal law generally falls under the Federal List.

The PAS president argued these constraints prevent state Syariah courts from imposing punishments he described as consistent with Islamic legal tradition, and that overlapping jurisdiction between state and federal criminal law has repeatedly led to state Islamic enactments being challenged in court.

To bolster his argument, Hadi invoked the late Islamic law scholar Ahmad Ibrahim, citing his call for Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution to be interpreted broadly — encompassing law, politics and economics as al-din, or a complete way of life, rather than a narrow, ritual-bound “religion of the Federation.”

Hadi said this position was shared by several former judicial figures, including ex-Chief Justice Tun Salleh Abas and Tun Ahmad Fairuz.

The statement also traced the historical debate over Islam’s constitutional status back to the 1956 Reid Commission, which drafted Malaysia’s independence constitution.

Hadi noted that an early draft had included language affirming Malaya would remain a “secular state” alongside recognising Islam as the federation’s religion — wording that was ultimately dropped following objections from the Malay Rulers and, later, PAS itself, which argued the eventual compromise in Article 3 was merely “ornamental.”

Much of the statement was also devoted to criticising the DAP, which Hadi accused of blocking further Islamisation of the legal system. He cited the DAP’s party constitution, which describes the 1957 Federal Constitution as a “secular” document, and noted that secretary-general Anthony Loke has said the party will not amend this founding position.

Hadi accused the DAP of leading opposition to Hadi’s own past private member’s bill to raise Act 355’s sentencing limits — a proposal that, in earlier iterations, sought to raise the caps to 30 years’ imprisonment, a RM100,000 fine and 100 strokes of whipping.

He further claimed PAS’s former coalition partners, PKR and Amanah, had failed to defend the Islamic position against DAP on the issue.

Hadi’s statement went further to declare that PAS considers the matter one of religious principle rather than ordinary politics, saying the party has severed political cooperation (tahaluf siyasi) with parties it says challenge Islam’s constitutional standing.

Make fewer controversial statements, PKR leader tells DAP

HANG TUAH JAYA: A PKR leader has called for DAP leaders to make fewer controversial statements to avoid disrupting the government’s work.

Penang PKR Youth exco member Fadzli Roslan said DAP should “take pity” on PKR’s hardworking leaders in government and urged the party’s leaders to be “better friends” to PKR.

“Let’s help the nation progress together. Don’t ruin this situation,” he said at the PKR Youth national congress today.

Fadzli also rejected accusations that PKR is “DAP’s servant”, saying PKR is not afraid to criticise its political allies.

He said PKR’s allies should respect its efforts in government and not disrupt the party’s economic development agenda.

Fadzli also called for PKR leaders at all levels not to be overly focused on appeasing their political allies to the detriment of the party’s own interests.

“Whether you’re in the central leadership council or the youth and women’s wings, you should stop being people pleasers,” he said.

In an apparent dig at Bersama, which was founded by former PKR leaders Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Fadzli said those who have set up a new party should stop meddling in PKR’s internal affairs.

He added that attacks on PKR by people who have left the party should not go unanswered.

“If you want to go, go. Why talk about PKR? They attack the party, our president and other leaders day and night. Should we stay silent?” he asked.

Do the unthinkable: six ways to prevent a BN-PN takeover

For all Malaysians who abhor the conservatism of BN-PN, a go-for-broke situation lies ahead, when all bets are off and every single deal is on the table. With their decisive victory in Negeri Sembilan, the Malay-dominant combination of Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional probably smell victory at the next general election. If they next win in Melaka, Umno will probably pull out of the unity government and take a few MPs with them to trigger an early general election. It is no longer a matter of if, but when: as early as the year’s end, or by the new year. Pakatan Harapan has no way to win unless 1.5 million Malaysians living overseas are able to vote easily and effortlessly, or if they can come home to save their country from the certain conservatism that will kill the Malaysia we deserve.

Even with the overseas vote, PH will still have an uphill battle as Malays have made their choice very clear: apparently, they do not care about corruption, economic development or justice, as long as the BN-PN notion of a safe “Payung Melayu” can be realised and the evil DAP is decimated forever. Thus, PH is left with nothing else but the unthinkable. It still has a few months or half a year left in which to act. The gloves must come off. This will be a do-or-die situation for all Malaysians who abhor the conservative narrative of BN-PN. PH needs to make “unthinkable” moves that will never be matched by BN-PN for reasons of greed. I will explain and elucidate.

A new coalition
First, PH needs to form a loose coalition with all progressive-minded parties like Muda, Bersama, Parti Sosialis Malaysia and others who do not use race or religion as their main ideological platform. PH must also give a few seats to independent candidates that are honest and earnest enough to stand in the election.

This will set the tone for Malaysians that PH is serious about being progressive and moving forward, leaving Umno to live with PAS and PN.For Malays, the narrative is total Malay-Muslim dominance while PH Plus will be for a progressive Malaysia aligned with the ideals of both Sabah and Sarawak people.

Recognise the UEC
Second, PH must recognise the Unified Examination Certificate of Chinese-medium schools, as Sabah and Sarawak have done. Umno can scream disloyalty to the constitution, but Sabah and Sarawak as partners in Malaysia have shown the way. PH should also increase the racial quota in universities to 45:55 and just do it.

Once upon a time, Dr Mahathir Mohamad made an overnight change for the teaching of maths and science to English, after the Malays deserted Umno for Reformasi. He had the courage and shrewdness to offer the juiciest prize to the non-Malays and progressive Malays. PH should meditate seriously on what Mahathir did. Third, PH should subsidise 20% of private college fees for young Malaysians from M40 and B40 families. Every B40 graduate from public and private institutions should be given a monthly RM400 allowance for a year to look for jobs, with payments ending two months after they secure decent employment.

BN-PN will never do these things as many of their politicians may have other ideas for the money to be spent. It is better for PH to empty the country’s coffers for the good of the people than to leave a chest full of money for other parties to selfishly use for themselves and their families if or when they take over the reins.

Non-Islamic religions
Fourth, PH should establish special departments at the federal and state levels for other religions, headed by an executive councillor or a minister in the prime minister’s office, to deal with the development of houses of worship and their legal registration. The proceeds from the sin tax on alcohol, gambling and the pig farming industry should be allocated to these departments.

BN-PN under their Malay supremacist narrative will never match this move. Yet again, Sabah and Sarawak have such departments and allocations, although not from the taxes I mention.

An East Malaysian as PM
Fifth, PH Plus must forge an alliance with the dominant Sabah and Sarawak parties and offer them a free path to electoral victory with no challenge from PH at all. Again, BN-PN will not match this move because they are hungry for the states’ wealth for God knows what purpose. This alliance can further be sweetened by offering to pay whatever is due from oil revenue as a result of past injustices. Again, BN-PN will never agree to this as they want that wealth accumulated in Tanah Melayu, I assume.

Sixth – and this would be the coup de grace – PH can offer the prime ministership to a candidate from Sabah and Sarawak if the coalition wins the day.Anwar Ibrahim should be okay with this offer, since I am confident that Anwar has no wealth to protect, and neither do any of his children, unlike some other prime ministers before him. If so, Malaysians will finally get to see a Sabahan or Sarawakian PM before they leave this world.

The end is near for good Malaysians and PH. This is a go-for-broke situation. All bets are off and every single deal is on the table, especially the “unthinkable” ones. There is no other way to save Malaysia from the return of BN’s culture of wealth and the conservatism of PN.

BN-PN will never match these moves.

I think Malaysians will have many nice and exciting things to look forward to and thus come out to vote. In the days ahead, we will see either the end of the line for a progressive Malaysia, or the beginning of a wonderful one for us all.

Who really won in Negeri Sembilan?

The return of identity politics means that Malaysia is the biggest loser.

On paper, it is clear who the victors are in the Negeri Sembilan state election, but there is still a need to ask: Who really won, and who actually lost?

Let’s analyse Barisan Nasional’s performance. BN bagged only 18 seats, one short of the simple majority needed to form the state government. BN needed Perikatan Nasional’s seven seats, making the latter the kingmaker.

But it also means that BN is now beholden to another coalition that can dictate terms, with the tacit understanding that a dissatisfied PN could “break” the state government just as it helped form it.

As for the votes that BN won, how many can it really claim to be from its own supporters or fence-sitters? How many of the votes BN obtained were transferred from PN, particularly PAS?

The understanding that BN and PN hammered out meant there was, in reality, no blanket support for Umno and BN, which is why BN should not feel too pleased with its performance.

Chinese voters

Here’s another point to ponder. Did the non-Malay vote, particularly the Chinese vote, return to BN’s fold? Not really.

DAP still had the majority of Chinese voters in its pocket. If it had not, the party would have suffered another wipeout, as it did in Sabah.

Chinese voters may have been angered enough by PN election director Sanusi Nor’s “Tanah Melayu” remarks to come out and cast their ballots.

However, Sanusi’s remarks, along with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s theme of Malay unity, could also have contributed to a strong Malay voter turnout.

PH’s standing

Now let us look at Pakatan Harapan. Did it really lose, considering the situation it was in?

Firstly, PH went into the election alone, with no partners. In the previous state election, it partnered with BN in an alliance inspired by the federal unity government.

PH and BN governed the state together until 14 Umno assemblymen decided to withdraw their support for Aminuddin Harun, then the menteri besar.

(PH was never in the driving seat and had to rely on help from its “enemies” — ironically, the situation BN is in, after Saturday.)

Although PH’s standing was reduced to 11 seats from the previous 17, the party did not actually lose Negeri Sembilan because the coalition never had a firm grip on the state to begin with.

Winners and losers

Next, we look at the non-Malay vote. I had expected non-Malay voters to give DAP a drubbing, but they did not. There was also an increase in voter turnout.

So, in the end, who were the real winners and losers? For me, PN, PAS and Wawasan were the clear winners. Hamzah Zainudin’s party won three of the four seats it contested in its maiden outing under the PN banner.

Wawasan’s win is a lesson that Rafizi Ramli’s Bersatu should heed. New parties need influential partners. No person or party is an island.

And the real losers? For me, it is Malaysians and Malaysia. We are, sadly, reverting to identity politics.

According to Pakatan Harapan election director Amirudin Shari, racial rhetoric was rife in the run-up to the polls.

Malay voters, it seems, were captivated by the idea of a Malay-Muslim political empire more than by the billions of ringgit in losses recorded by Tabung Haji, which, by the way, was managed by Malays.

The Malay electorate seemingly ignored the development that PH has ushered in or is working to deliver. Malays, it seems, are more comfortable with a 60-year-old mindset.

Make no mistake, this is the stark reality of Malaysian and Malay politics for the foreseeable future.

An Asian individual diligently performs a leg exercise using a machine to enhance strength and fitness, demonstrating commitment to health in a contemporary gym setting.

A young Chinese man suffered acute kidney failure after working out too intensely, prompting a doctor to warn fitness enthusiasts to slow down. The 23-year-old university student from central China’s Henan province reportedly developed rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition where damaged muscle fibres break down rapidly. He was also diagnosed with acute kidney failure, which is a complication of rhabdomyolysis. The reason behind his acute illness was fitness training.

His doctor, nephrologist Liu Haofei at the First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine, said he was “trying too hard” in his leg training, which caused rhabdomyolysis. He first developed blood in urine, then stopped urinating at all. When he went to the hospital he could not even walk by himself.

Liu said his creatine kinase level, an indicator of muscle damage, had exceeded 20,000 units per litre, which was over 100 times the normal level. He therefore required emergency dialysis.

The young man said he trained his legs more intensely than other body parts. The intensity of the 23-year-old’s training sessions left him unable to pass water. It is not the first case that reportedly suffered from rhabdomyolysis due to hard workout. This year, a 24-year-old man in eastern China’s Zhejiang province showed symptoms of rhabdomyolysis 20 days into his fitness training and was admitted to hospital.

He reportedly had been lacking exercise and worked out after work for 20 days consecutively. In 2024, a 26-year-old man in central China’s Hubei province intensified his exercise to develop eight-pack abs and boost his success in pursuing a woman. The man did an hour of high-intensity crunches and leg raises and was satisfied with his effort. But the next day, he found the muscles in both thighs were extremely painful and he urinated blood. He was then diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis.

Doctors said that excessive fitness training, especially among those who previously had no workout habits, could possibly lead to the condition.

Doctor Liu advised people to increase training intensity step by step, especially when they just begin working out. They should also drink more water during exercise, about 200 to 300 millilitres per half an hour. It is also advised that people should avoid training during hot and humid weather. They should also immediately stop training if they feel pain in their muscles.

“Exercise should be controlled, otherwise it is ruining health rather than improving it,” said one online observer. “This is why I opt for milder traditional Chinese ways of training, such as tai chi,” said another.

To all lifters above 40 especially above 50. Go slow. Go light. Unker just got herniated disc. No prior signal, just finished my first set of bent over db reverse fly, then felt the immediate and intense pain at the lower back area. Had to kick back working dumbbells back to the rack as the whole back like stiffen and any bending will result in sharp pain, end of the session immediately. First thought was maybe muscle strain, just ice packed it, maybe didn’t warm the lower back and maybe the pain will go away in hours and at worst after a night sleep. Woke up this morning, checked into reality. I can’t even get up, need to roll by the side to the floor and use squatting stance with my arms using the bed as supporting to lift my self up in pain. Then took my first step, wahlauehhh walking also in pain and slowly until standing also in pain. Basically all my mobility movements are fucked up. Sitting, getting up, bending and etc all fucking hurt. Now I’m off to see doctor and maybe chiropractor. Hope MRI scan needed. Ibuprofen not helping in my case. Be mindful on your weight, form, warming up and etc. This shit happened without warning and in the most unexpected way. Who would have thought a fucking bent over db reverse fly fucked my back up really good.

Thai PM blames stockpilers for fuel shortage

Anutin Charnvirakul said illegal fuel stockpiling and cross-border smuggling cost the government US$1.4 billion.

BANGKOK: Thailand’s prime minister slammed on Friday oil traders for “excessive profiteering”, blaming those stockpiling fuel or smuggling it abroad for shortages that have driven prices steadily higher.
“Authorities have found cases of fuel stockpiling and smuggling for sale in neighbouring countries,” Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said, adding the problem had cost the government 50 billion baht (US$1.4 billion).

“This action (smuggling and stockpiling) amounts to excessive profiteering from rising oil prices during the global energy crisis,” he said, calling it “a major factor behind the nationwide fuel shortages seen in recent weeks”.

Evidence of hoarding and profiteering among large and medium-sized oil traders had been found on land and at sea, he said.

Anutin said some seaborne shipments had been deliberately delayed so fuel would not arrive on schedule, allowing sellers to wait for retail price increases. Other shipments had been diverted for stockpiling and were thought to be destined for neighbouring countries.

More than 57 million litres of fuel were reported missing during sea transportation in southern Thailand, minister of justice Rutthaphon Naowarat said.

The department of special investigation is pursuing the matter as a special case, and investigations are underway, according to the prime minister.

The allegations of stockpiling come amid public outcry over successive fuel price hikes in late March and early April.

Fuel prices in Thailand have reached record highs, with unleaded gasoline at 57.51 baht (US$1.76) per litre and diesel at 47.74 baht (US$1.46).

The war in the Middle East, triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb 28, has caused disruptions to oil and gas supplies and price fluctuations across much of Southeast Asia.

Vietnam also hiked fuel prices again this week, bringing the cost of diesel to 46,200 dong (US$1.80) per litre – up more than 140% since late February.

The price of regular gasoline, meanwhile, was up more than 28% since the start of the war to 25,970 dong (US$1.00) per litre.

Hanoi has dipped into an emergency fuel price stabilisation fund and scrapped environmental taxes to ease pressure on fuel prices.

The English section of South Korea's gruelling college entrance exam, or Suneung, is notoriously difficult, with some students comparing it to deciphering an ancient script, and others calling it "insane".

So intense was the criticism around this year's test that the top official in charge of administering it resigned to take responsibility for the "chaos" it caused.

"We sincerely accept the criticism that the difficulty of questions... was inappropriate," said Suneung chief Oh Seung-geol, adding that the test "fell short" despite having gone through several rounds of editing.
Among the most daunting questions are one on Immanuel Kant's philosophy of law and another involving gaming jargon.

The latter, worth three points, asks students to pick where a sentence should fit in a given paragraph.

12 tolled concessions ran at a loss in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve toll concessionaires nationwide recorded losses in 2024, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said any proposal to build new highways must be assessed carefully, as the government would eventually bear the cost of losses when taking over the concession.

Although many people propose new highways, the reality is that 12 toll concessions recorded losses based on their financial reports for 2024.

"In conclusion, anyone proposing new highways must calculate traffic and financial projections carefully.

If traffic volume is insufficient, revenue will not cover operating costs, and eventually, the government will have to bear the losses when taking over the concession," he said in response to a supplementary question from Zahir Hassan (PH–Wangsa Maju) on the performance of toll concessions.

The 12 concessions include the Kuala Lumpur–Putrajaya Expressway (MEX), the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), the Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (SMART), the Kemuning–Shah Alam Highway (LKSA), the Sungai Besi–Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) and the Damansara–Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH).

Others include the Senai–Desaru Expressway (SDE), the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), the Setiawangsa–Pantai Expressway (SPE), the Kajang–Seremban Highway (LEKAS), the West Coast Expressway (WCE) and the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (LLB).
