Supermicro X9DRi-F only boots with cheap PSU

hi guys,

In brief before I start with my issue, below is my server setup:
1. Mobo : Supermicro X9DRi-F
2. CPU : Intel Xeon E5 2650 V2 (2 CPUs)
3. RAM : Samsung ECC RAM 64 GB (16GB x4 sticks) 1600MHz DDR3
4. PSU #1: AVF APS750-F12P 750watt (non-rated but very cheap and lightweight)
5. PSU #2: Thermaltake SMART SE 630watt (Bronze rated)

The issue(s):

At first i started to assemble the server with Thermaltake PSU and it wont boot. It only spins and then stop (no boot/no beep/no VGA output/no post). Few seconds gap it will spin again and stop. So I thought the mobo or the PSU was faulty.

So, I got this cheap AVF PSU and I put it on and walla it beep enter bios and went well into the desktop. Surprisingly it will just boot without the need to short pin 1 & 2 of the JF1. But yeah the system is working. Please note that the Thermaltake is functional PSU as I am using it with my other PC even before I start to try it with this Supermicro board. I even tried it out with another PSU: Corsair VS550 and the same thing happened - it wont boot! and again to note both Thermaltake and Corsair are working PSUs and boot as usual with my other PCs. So, out of curiosity what is wrong with the supermicro board? Seems like it requires cheap PSU to boot Am I missing something here? How do I want to setup 24/7 server with cheap PSU lol.

Ubuntu File Sharing

Hi guys,

Hope am at the right section.

I am planning to use Ubuntu as file sharing server (just file sharing no RAID or backup), but having some problems in getting it done especially on the Samba part.

I want to share the entire hard disk with other platforms especially my other 2 windows based PCs. I have 3 x 2TB hard disks.

Problems encountered:

1. I have enable the share but unable to access the disk.

2. Setting to permanently share the disk. Because if i restart the pc/server, i need to go through the same sharing process again. in other words, is not permanently sharing the disk once PC retstarts.

3. Is there any linux based OS (other than Ubuntu) that can provide simple sharing solution?

Been through videos on youtube and what not but still not able to solve it. Is there any simple/straightforward way of doing the sharing..just to share the disks permanently.

Appreciate any assistance.

Sabah Electricity on verge of insolvency

KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of loss-making Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), which is on the verge on insolvency, will hinge on the ongoing discussion among its major shareholder Tenaga Nasional Bhd

(TNB), the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (KeTTHA) and Ministry of Finance (MoF).

“The discussion is crucial, especially since SESB continues to make losses and on the verge of insolvency,” KeTTHA Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said on Friday.

TNB owns 82.75% of SESB and the Sabah State Government holds the remaining stake.

Ongkili pointed out that SESB’s energy generation cost is much higher than its current average tariff and this has caused the Federal Government to subsidise its fuel cost.

“SESB’s current average tariff is 34.52 cents/kwh while cost of energy generation is 56.50 cents/kwh. Hence, the Federal Government has been subsidising SESB’s fuel costs, that is primarily diesel, medium fuel oil (MFO) and gas,” he said.

The Federal Government has also been providing the bulk of SESB’s capital expenditure. Since 2012, the Federal Government has spent RM4.2mil to boost SESB’s operation while both TNB and SESB have also spent their portion on capex expenditure.

Ongkili added that through these efforts, the system average interruption duration index (SAIDI) has been reduced from 777 minutes per customer a year in 2014 to 311 last year. The SAIDI is expected to be further reduced to 280 by year end.

SESB also has been asking for tariff revision since its last review in 2014, but it is also the Federal Government’s duty to ensure tariff is fair and affordable to consumers.

He also said the ministry wants to ensure that the tariff revision is reflective of the quality of power delivered.

He was responding to the comments by TNB chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd who was quoted saying they were discussing on the future of SESB and an agreement was expected by 2018 to determine the best option.

water heater problem

Hi guys need some opinion.

I am using Joven 830i for my water heater. Today i realized there is no green light but the red light is on by itself after i switch on the main switch. But the red light is a bit dull. It will be brighter if i turn on the heater.

Water pump works ok. Tho the red light is on but the water is not heating up unless i switch it on. Normally, once i switch on the main switch the green ( indicator) will light up. Is it just light issue? Coz for now it works ok. It's just the light not function as it used to be.
