Test summary
The Apple iPhone 8 Plus is the best-performing mobile device camera we have ever tested. Its overall DxOMark Mobile score of 94 sets a new record, beating out the 90 points for both the Google Pixel and the HTC U11, as well as the 92 that its sibling iPhone 8 just scored. Its Photo score of 96 is also a new record, blowing past the Pixel’s 90. For Video, its score of 89 is among our highest, but tied with the HTC U11 and slightly below the Pixel’s 91. Of course, the Pixel is nearly a year old now, so it makes sense that Apple’s new flagship is breaking new ground.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — The National Civics Bureau (BTN) claims that racism can unite a race for a “good purpose” as Malaysia struggles to deal with inter-ethnic tensions that have bubbled up the last few years.

In another set of slides uploaded on its website titled “Rasis”, the government agency claimed that racism has instead received a “negative connotation” as the idea is being used by certain parties to achieve their political goals and topple the government.

“The reality is, the minorities in Malaysia have possessed what was mentioned in human rights,” according to the content of the slide first uploaded on March 11.

It claimed that the concept of “racism” had initially originated from the Islamic concept of “asabiyyah”, a positive idea that centered on brotherhood and formed social solidarity in historical Muslim civilisations.

The term “asabiyyah”, originally meaning “tribalism”, was popularised by 14th century Arab historian Ibn Khaldun to describe “social cohesion”.

According to BTN, the concept of racism started being described as negative when Germans and Thais started using it for their political agenda, in addition to several races who proclaimed themselves as the “chosen ones”, such as the Jews, the Chinese, the Serbs, and the Russians.

It also claimed that racism was tainted with racial oppression and poverty among the ethnic Hispanics and African-Americans, and the apartheid policy in South Africa.

The slides then refuted claims that Malaysia is a racist country, pointing out that ethnic Chinese tycoons dominated the list of top 10 richest Malaysians, and the Christians, who make up 9.1 per cent of the population, are allowed to build a grand church complex.

Earlier today, Malay Mail Online reported that independent book publishers have been tarred by the BTN as masterminds of an “anti-establishment” movement to influence youths voting in the 14th general election, in another set of presentation slides.

Despite denials by the government and the agency, sporadic leaks of closed-door events conducted by the BTN or featuring its staff have continued to entrench suspicions that the bureau was a hotbed of racism and “brainwashing”.

A senior BTN official caused an uproar back in 2010 when word leaked that he had used the terms “si mata sepet” and “si botol” at a closed-door Puteri Umno gathering to describe the Chinese and Indians respectively.

The terms are considered derogatory with “si mata sepet” meaning slit-eyed and “si botol”, alcoholic, in Malay.

This guy hit my car and ran away

this morning, i was driving to work and it was a bad traffic jam. people were driving slowly when suddenly this sohai hit my car rear. it was not a very hard one and i was sure it was nothing. i was expecting him to just drive next to me and raise his hand saying sorry. i would be totally okay with that.

unfortunately he drove away without saying anything. i tried to chase him and i managed to get close to his car because it was a traffic jam, how far can you actually go anyway? he was pissed off i guess and instead of saying sorry, he flipped his middle finger to me. his gf was in his car so i thought he wanted to act tough.

unlucky for him, he messed with the wrong guy. i took pictures of his car and got his details. apparently, he got quite a number of summonses. only 20 y/o summore. kids nowadays just got a car and gf suddenly feel so grown up. smh.

Chapel Hill: Three young Muslims gunned down

A family of three young Muslims have been shot dead in their home in a quiet neighbourhood of North Carolina in the US.

Police have named the victims as 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19.

Officers were called to reports of gunshots at 5.11pm at an apartment block largely housing academics and young professionals on Summerwalk Circle in Chapel Hill.

The victims were found shot dead at the scene, while some residents described not even being aware there was an incident until police arrived.

A 46-year-old man, named by police as Craig Stephen Hicks, has been arrested on suspicion of three counts of first-degree murder.

The shooting has been met with an outpouring of anger on social media, where people posting new pictures of the victims studying and playing basketball claimed they had been “murdered execution style”.

Some compared the incident to the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris, and others called on Barack Obama and senior religious figures to condemn the attacks.

An American football and basketball fan, Mr Barakat was believed to be a dental student at the University of North Carolina and volunteered with a charity providing emergency dental care to children in Palestine.

He regularly posted on Twitter, and wrote in January: “It's so freaking sad to hear people saying we should ‘kill Jews’ or ‘kill Palestinians’. As if that's going to solve anything.”

The three victims were recently pictured together at the graduation of his sister-in-law, Razan, who ran a blog showing her interest in photography and art.

She had started a degree at North Carolina State University last summer, studying Architecture and Environmental Design, and her Twitter biography read: “I like buildings and other stuff.”

A community Facebook page set up in the memory of the three victims, called “Our Three Winners”, thanked people for their support and said it would carry “official announcements”.

Wirathu calls UN envoy a ‘whore’

Controversial nationalist monk Wirathu lambasted the UN’s special rapporteur for human rights in Burma, Yanghee Lee, in a speech on Friday at the Kyeikkasan Grounds in Rangoon’s Tamwe Township. He called her a “whore” for her alleged bias towards the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

“We have already made public our Race Protection Law, but without even studying it, this b**** [Burmese: kaungma] keeps on complaining about how it is against human rights!” he shouted to hundreds of supporters on Friday afternoon.

“Can this whore really be from a respectable family background?” he thundered, to which the audience responded, “No!”

“Don’t assume you are a respectable person, just because you have a position in the UN,” he continued. “In our country, you are just a whore.

“If you are so willing, you may offer your arse to the kalar [racist term meaning ‘blacks’]. But you will never sell off our Arakan State!”

The UN had not responded to the insult at the time of press.

On Friday morning, a group of some 500 monks and lay supporters, led by hardliners Wirathu and Parmaukkha, marched from Kyay Thon Pagoda, near Shwedagon Pagoda, to Tamwe Township east of the city centre, holding placards reading “UN decisions cause problems in Burma – we don’t want that!”

Among the marchers were members of the Arakan National Network, which has condemned the UN’s call for Burma to grant citizenship to members of the Rohingya community who were born in the country.

Wirathu’s speech coincided with Yanghee Lee’s press conference in Rangoon on Friday when she concluded a 10-day trip to Burma, her second official visit to the country.

“Fundamental rights are not hierarchical – they aren’t conditional upon one another. They’re inalienable,” said Lee on Friday. “You can be assured that in all my meetings with government interlocutors, I use the word ‘Rohingya’. The rights of Rohingya people must be protected, promoted and upheld.”

In December, the UN General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution, drafted by the European Union, that called on Naypyidaw to extend citizenship rights to the Rohingya and remove the mobility restrictions placed on them. The resolution also urged an investigation into rights abuses in Arakan State, equal access to essential services, and reconciliation between Buddhist and Muslim communities in the region.
