TM's 15billion HSBB Will Be Scaled Down

RM15.2b high-speed broadband project may be scaled down

Date: 18-04-2008

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd is still in discussion with the government on the details of the RM15.2 billion high-speed broadband (HSBB) project, which may yet be scaled down.

"We're still in discussion with the government on the final details (of the HSBB plan), the rollout plan, whether we will scale down the project," TM chairman Tan Sri Md Radzi Mansor told shareholders present at its AGM yesterday.

The HSBB project, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in September last year, is to be implemented over the span of 10 years in partnership with the government. It is part of the government's plan to propel Malaysia into the digital economy as well as efforts to achieve the national objective of 50% household broadband penetration by 2010.

Credit analysts, for instance, are keeping a close watch on the final details for the HSBB project due to its sheer size to determine whether any adjustments should be made to TM's credit rating due to its commitment to the project.

The final details of the project will also influence the valuation of TM after spinning off its international and domestic mobile assets, as the demerged TM is marketing itself as the country's leading next generation communications provider with a strong dividend policy.

TM's outgoing CEO Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar told reporters yesterday that TM would only execute plans for the HSBB after the final details of the HSBB project had been determined. The four main areas of focus for the project were the last mile, the core network, international connectivity and the core content platform, he told shareholders earlier.

Based on previous indications, TM will invest RM10.4 billion over 10 years while the government will fork out RM4.8 billion, or one third of the total cost. The HSBB coverage is expected to be available across 2.2 million premises over the next three years, according to TM's 430-page annual report.

News source:
http://www.theedgedaily.com/

TMnet Big Bottleneck Connection To Taiwan

Did anyone of you all notice that TMnet connection to Taiwan is highly congested at very odd hours like 3am in the morning?

Funny occurring thing is that the connection works fine during the afternoon but not at night.I'm figuring that lots of Malaysian fire up P2P connections to hog up the connections every night before they go to sleep. It has already been going on for years.

At this moment of writing, I can't even stream a good 100kbps radio station from http://hichannel.hinet.net/radio/index.jsp
or
http://www.hitoradio.com/

Is TMnut stupid or what?
Do you know that the Chinese community in Malaysia relies so much on this connection to play online games, P2P and surfing from Taiwan?
All this with just a STM1 155mbps connection?
Even Singapore with such a small island has a 1Gbps connection to HiNET, Taiwan.

TMnut gateway planning is one big joke.
You can ask most online chinese gamers, they'll tell you how frustrated they are.

Important Criterias For Getting 4mbps ADSL

Just called up Streamyx Helpline to confirm.

They said to qualify these important criterias must be met:

1) The main node servicing your telephone riser near your home must be fiber based.

2) You must be less than 3km if best less than 1km from the nearest exchange/fiber cabinet.
For your regular Streamyx it's less than 5km but the 4mbps/2mbps packages are an exception.

3) You need to be the phone line owner for them to serve you.

I've asked them about my line whether I was eligible and they told me that I'm not even though I'm only 2.03km from the nearest exchange.

What?
After replacing the overhead cables just a few weeks and I'm still not eligible?

He keeps mentioning that my line is copper based bullshxt even though i'm certain my line can sync upto around 10mbps on ADSL2.

Now i really need to make them replace the copper cable which services the riser near my house to fiber.

Stupid TMnut, when you will do that?

Also a very important note:

Oftenly, 4mbps users will have their line uncapped to something close to 8mbps for an important purpose. They are doing this because TMnet is trialling a new IPTV service which works like your ASTRO.If you qualify for it, they'll install a Alcatel-Thompson decoder in your house like a ASTRO decoder to access it.

The menu something like this:

Just like your ASTRO but it's delivered through your phone line.

Taiwan Has Just Started Offering FTTx VDSL

Taiwan incumbent national telco Chunghwa Telecom has just started offering VDSL2.

RM88(NTD$850) for a 50m/3m VDSL line.

Link: http://www.cht.com.tw/CHTFinalE/Web/Functi...r.php?HHL_ID=20

They started on this project about the same time as TM and their CHT's vendor is Zyxel.
Looks like we are always slower than the competition.

Taiwan is spending USD$1.5billion to upgrade their nationwide broadband network to NGN fiber over a preiod of the next 5 years.the amount which they are planning to spend is just about the same amount which is that of Malaysia's National Broadband plan.

Both have started to take off about the same time but Taiwan has already started to roll our VDSL2 June last year?

How about TMnut?

News:

Taiwan-based Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) plans to invest NT$46 billion (US$1.5 billion) to expand its fiber-optic communications networks from 2008-2012, with NT$40 billion to be allocated for the purchase of networking equipment from Taiwan-based makers, CHT said at a seminar.

The investment in the fiber-optic networks is part of CHT's next-generation network (NGN) project, which requires a total capital outlay of NT$120 billion in a five-year period ending 2012, the company said.

The purchase of the fiber-optic network equipment during the five-year project will include equipment such as VDSL2, MSAN (multi-service access network), EPON (Ethernet passive optical network), home gateways, CPE (customer premises equipment) and L2/L3 Ethernet switches, among others, CHT noted.

For 2008, the planned purchase of fiber-optic network equipment is expected to top NT$9 billion, including NT$2 billion for VDSL2 and EPON equipment, CHT detailed.

Since CHT has stepped up its cooperation with Taiwan-based network equipment makers in recent years, the ratio of network equipment purchased from local makers will remain at a high level this year, according to market sources.

The ratio of the purchase of network equipment from local makers to CHT's total procurement stood at 58.8% in 2004 before climbing to 65% in 2006 and 65.7% in 2007, CHT data showed.

Taiwan's leading network-equipment makers, including D-Link and Zyxel Communications, are vying for the orders from CHT, said market sources.

http://www.digitimes.com/telecom/a20080311PD213.html

How long have TMnut been selling 1mbps?

When was the last time we got upgraded from 512k to 1mbps for the same price, RM88?

I remembered that time we had almost the same package speeds as Singapore. They caught up with us later on tentatively by releasing 3m, 6m, 10m, 24m, 30m and 100m in just about 2 years time.

Why TMnut? Can't play the catchup game?
Even Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam are offering faster packages than us today with 24m ADSL2+.

Ipoh In Need of City-Wide Fiber Network

Ipoh is in need of a citywide fiber utility network which is public owned and not one which is monopolized by some company. I envisioned one which is owned by a public utility company which practices net neutrality which charges access fee every month with the choice of subscribers having the option to choose any participating isp without bonding contracts.

The monthly net neutrality fee structure should be like this:

Fixed access fee(fiber utilization) + any isp(variable charge according to needs) = total monthly charge

Subscribers will have the choice to have any number of internet accounts, (tv, IP phone, internet combo packages as arranged by service providers & isps) and bundle discounts.

I hope it comes true and this will put Ipoh in the forefront of the IT industry.

To others, don't copy my idea.

Our copper telephone wires should have been managed this way long ago instead of Telekom owning them all and at the same time trying to forcefully push the incumbent isp to all of us.

Clear examples of flourishing communities benefiting from neutral phone networks would be housing areas like Mont Kiara, Damansara Perdana and Penang's Kristal Point Complex.

Some Streamyx users getting 2mbps down

I have accumulated enough information that TMnet offers 2mbps in some areas for the same price as their 1mbps RM77 & RM88.Some are also getting like 1.5mbps and the unlucky ones only 1024kbps.They are not mis-capped, and for certain reasons if you're lucky enough to live in some "strategic" area you'll get it.

Is that a bit unfair? difference between 500kbps is quite large.I noticed by reading local forums even some "kampung" subscribers are getting such speed with excellent line conditions(single digit attenuation figures) while some of us live in large cities cannot get such speed.

BEWARE of Mahkamah KL Phone Scam

Today I received several calls in the morning from a private number 0301 at home.To be exact 4 calls in total.

Each time I picked up the phone a pre recorded message plays as follows:

"Ini Mahkamah Kuala Lumpur.Anda dikehendaki untuk menghadiri ke mahkamah pada rabu minggu depan kerana disyaki terlibat dalam satu kes ceti rompak.Untuk maklumat lanjut sila tekan 9..."
The boy who spoke in the recorded message sounded stern coming from a Chinese. If I am not mistaken he sounded like one of the call operators in the telco helplines which always call u up when you don't pay your bills.Very familiar..where have I heard of him before.

I was shocked when I hear it. Morning persistent calls from the KL majistrate court when I am in Ipoh at the moment? So inquisitively I press 9.My call got directed to some operator I believe is Chinese again which only knew how to speak Malay even though I repeatedly asked him questions in English. Then he ask me for my name, I gave him a fake surname. Then he started asking for my IC number for verification. Now I'm mad.Gave him a slam on the phone and that was the last i heard from the ghost number.

Anyone has experienced this before?
How can this be allowed to happen?Should have asked him for a return call number the next time.

I am now trying to recall who the fxxk did I gave my home phone number to most recently. If I ever find out about the culprit, this would make it to the press and he'll sure be referred to the police.Stupid idiots now resorting to exploiting Malaysian judiciary system for scams.

If the court wants to ask me to attend a hearing they could have probably sent me a letter or have a police knocking up my door. Why would they put a pre recorded message for me?

This call came in to my home's TM fixed line.
