1. My car is just under 2 years old, already there's a high pitched noise (something like a squeaking-screeching sound) coming from somewhere near the engine. I believe it's the belt but when the mechanic checked, he just tried pouring some water on it and the sound stopped for a few seconds before coming back. Then he concluded it's fine! If it's fine then why is it making that noise?

I checked online for some ideas like making sure the belt is not too loose and checking for hairline cracks but none of those appear. By the way it happens as long as the engine is running, regardless if my a/c is on or off. Any ideas???

2. I just changed my brakes but there's that screeching noise. If I'm not mistaken, the noise is produced when the metal thing touches the disk, meaning the pads are too thin. But this is a new one! Anyone experienced this before with a new pad??

3. I'm trying to install some custom DIY stuff into the empty bay just below the radio but I've no experience in removing the panel. Anyone tried it before? There are no manuals anywhere! I wonder how mechanics learned to open almost every type of car they come across! If someone knows how to remove it, let me know! Thanks!

Can my mobo support Kingston 2GB RAM or not?

My mobo is Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L (rev. 1.0)... can it support Kingston ValueRAM KVR800D2N6/2G or not???

I now using 2x KVR800D2N5/1G... and on Gigabyte website this model is listed as supported... but not the KVR800D2N6/2G model... why? Can support or not actually???

I thought all modern mobo within 3 years ago are universal and can support common RAMs???

If no, any tips how can i increase my RAM to 3gb or 4gb??? Any model?

Also, what difference between KVR800D2N5/2G and KVR800D2N6/2G??? The Cas Latency depend on my mobo or what?

Gigabyte mobo RAM support list: (I don't know the list is outdated or not... so that's why I ask this)

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/Memory...a-ep31-ds3l.pdf

Dual-boot drive letter problem

I used to have this:

C:\ - Windows XP Pro SP3
D:\ - Windows Vista Ultimate SP1
E:\ - partition
F:\ - partition
G:\ - partition
H:\ - partition

HDD1: WesternDigital 320GB - C, E, F
HDD2: Maxtor 320GB - D, G, H

I'm ok with that. The drive letters won't change no matter if I'm on XP of Vista.
e.g. Boot into XP, XP is drive C & Vista is drive D
Boot into Vista, Vista is drive D & XP is drive C

But after I reinstalled Vista, they always get switched by the OS....
e.g. Boot into XP, XP is drive C & Vista is drive D
Boot into Vista, Vista is drive C & XP is drive D

So let's say I want to install something in Vista, should I install it in drive C or D? If install in C, will in get installed into my XP when I boot into XP? Or will the installation be redirected to be in D?

I know this is a problem with most dual-booting but I never experienced that when I just started... all the drive letters are fixed like I said above. Is there any solution to permanently make XP think it's forever C, and make Vista think it's forever D???

New MoBo and 8800GT driver can't work

Hi all I've been building up my PC since a few years ago and this is about a PC I've recently built, then upgraded the mobo again.

My OLD specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 oc 3.0GHz
*Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L (old)
1x Kingston KVR667D2N5/2G
1x Kingston KVR667D2N5/1G
Gigabyte nvidia 8800GT 512MB DDR3 OC with Zalman (NX88T512HP)
2x HDD, Dual-booted with XP and Vista
DVD drive
iCute casing
iCute 500W PSU
CoolerMaster Geminii heatsink
CoolerMaster fans (x3)
Samsung 2232BW LCD monitor

My NEW specs are: (just changed to a newer motherboard and 2 new RAMs)

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 oc 3.0GHz
*Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L (new)
2x Kingston KVR800D2N5/1G
Gigabyte nvidia 8800GT 512MB DDR3 OC with Zalman (NX88T512HP)
2x HDD, Dual-booted with XP and Vista
DVD drive
iCute casing
iCute 500W PSU
CoolerMaster Geminii heatsink
CoolerMaster fans (x3)
Samsung 2232BW LCD monitor

So the thing is, I used the older spec for a month, then I changed a new mobo and 2 new faster rams. Doing so, I booted into Windows XP and just installed the new motherboard driver and everything went fine.

BUT, when I booted into Windows Vista, my display lost signal from the GPU when it reaches a certain time (maybe 2 mins since POST) but I know the HDD is still running because the lights are still blinking... this only happens when I boot into normal Windows Vista mode.... Safe modes are all ok...

SO, I reinstalled Vista and everything was fine until I installed the nvidia driver (tried the CD version and also the newest version)... after install, reboot and the signal was cut again mostly after it shows the vista logo or before it tries to load the desktop... I checked the drivers in Safe Mode and it's the correct nvidia driver....

So why can Safe Mode get a signal from my GPU but the normal mode can't?
Also because of this, I can't install my LCD monitor driver because the Samsung installer can't detect my display adapter (which is my GPU) so what's the problem? My mobo, GPU or monitor drivers?

PS. Sometimes my mobo can't detect my HDD or can't find bootmgr to boot (error 17) and this caused me to restart it several times...

Sry for the long post, but thanks very much to those who tried to help me out

Where to get PSP Phat faceplates?

Guys I've owned the PSP almost 3 years now so the PHAT and I have a lot of sweet memories.... too bad it got scratched over time and now even the clear coating is chiseled like it's been bitten by someone... so where can I get the black PSP-1000 faceplates? I can't find it anywhere here... I know I should just use my PSP Slim but the Phat still deserves some TLC for display purposes

sorry if wrong section but the PSP forum structure here is not as perfect as the Computer forums...

Moderator's Note:

Please use existing thread - http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/612527/+1100

Thread closed.

Is this temperature normal?

Guys I've recently overclocked my Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4GHz to 3.0GHz. That's as much as it can go. At 3.2GHz it starts to hang and restart. But the temperature after a few hours is almost 60˚ C so is this normal? I'm on stock fan; the one that came with the processor.

Also I have a factory overclocked Gigabyte GeForce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 (NX88T512HP, NOT NX88T512H-B) at 700/1715/920, then I overclocked it again to 710/1725/930 (GPU/Shader/Memory). The temperature is 45˚C on desktop and up to 51˚C on gaming (mostly Crysis).

So the point is are those temperatures normal? Do I need to downclock them or get a 3rd party fan?

Hey guys I've run 3DMark06 and my scores are so much lower than what it should be... here's what it should be based on what I see on benchmark sites:

Based on Gigabyte's publicity stunt info: 11,979 fps (mine is a factory-overclocked card)
Based on websites: Around 10,000 fps - 12,000 fps

Mine: 9187 fps - 9295 fps

that's a few thousand frames lost! What happened?

My system spec:

- Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4GHz
- 3GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM
- nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 with Zalman fan a.k.a "GeForce 8800GT Turbo Force" - factory overclocked
- PSU of 500W
- 2x 320GB HDD

Making a new PC... need recommendations!

Hi guys, I'm using a 4 yr old pc so I wanted to build a new one. Thing is, I not really into the comp scene for a year now so need some newbie guidelines and recommendations.

I have read the thread before posting a recommendation so I really hope I can get some fast and accurate recommendations.

1. Budget is RM 2000- RM 2500 , excluding parts I have already bought stated below.

2. Bought motherboard, RAM and processor but haven't used yet. Still in box. Reuse IDE harddisk.

3. Purpose: office work related, internet related, gaming related, editing related.

- 3a. Games would like to play are CnC3, CoD4, Hellgate: London, Bioshock, Crysis, and all newer games

- 3b. Monitor need recommendation, games would prefer to play at max, but mid is still acceptable for Crysis

4. Intended purchase on May 08 - August 08

5. Prefer Intel, Gigabyte/MSI/Sapphire/GeCube/Asus, nVidia/ATi, Samsung, Corsair/Kingston.

Alright those are the details of what I should provide first. Now this is the case:

I bought a motherboard, Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L (it's not the high-end but I bought it out of a tight budget), processor, Intel Core2 Duo E4600 (also at tight budget), and a Kingston 1GB DDR2 RAM.

So what I know is that, my Mobo can only support a max 2GB RAM, and NO QUAD-CORE support, and only has 1 PCI-E slot. So what I don't have is pretty much everything except those 3 stuff. I'm running Windows XP SP2.

What I am thinking now on my RM2000- RM 2500 budget is

- nVidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB DDR3, OR nVidia Geforce 8600GT 512MB DDR3, or recommend me others for Crysis
- a 19" or 22" Samsung LCD monitor, preferably widescreen and contrast ratio of 1000:1
- a casing
- a PSU
- a mouse and keyboard (super cheap will do for now)
- no speakers needed yet
- a cheap dvd burner
What I want to know is

1. Can my motherboard, processor & RAM support a 8800GT?
2. Do I need bigger RAM for 8800GT or Crysis?
3. Does the 8800GT only comes in DVI?
4. Should I buy LCD monitors that come with a DVI and not VGA?
5. Can I use professional editing tools at maximum potential? e.g Rendering speed at a max for 3D rendering

if all the above is a yes, then

6. What power supply do I need? (yes I've read the thread but I need direct recommendations on model numbers or at least how much power I need)
7. How much more RAM do I need?
8. I still don't have a casing so are there any specific type of casing for a 8800GT?
9. No need to recommend DVD-Drive, HDD, Mouse & Keyboard, speakers
10. Can someone at least set up a guide or reference for me to start?

If want more info, ask me here or contact me at orien2v2@hotmail.com on WLM or email! Thanks!

Unable to play HD 720 movies..

I downloaded some HD videos, mostly from Stage6... all in divx formats... and then when I played with various players like WMP, Divx player, real player, quicktime and some 3rd party software, all is the same: the video is lagging but the sound is smooth... what's the problem?

I have in my pc:
Pentium4 HT 3.0Ghz x2 (dunno what this means... I have 2 processors???)
ATI Radeon 9250 graphic card with 128MB memory...
1024mb+ 512mb RAM
720GB HDD space
Windows XP SP2

I read some articles and found out that even with the low-profile graphic card like mine which only has 128mb of memory, it should still be able to play high definition videos and my RAM is more than enough compared to a new PC on the market which claims it is able to play HD... what other possible reasons? Is it the player?
