Building my first pc

hey guys,

i'm planning to build a gaming pc. this will be my first time doing it so i could use some advise:

i've got a budget about rm4500-5000.

i will primarily use it for gaming and not video/audio encoding. i have pretty much settled on the i5-2500k as reviews indicate that it's a sweet spot in terms of price and performance. what i'm struggling with now is my gpu.

i'm torn between the hd 6970 or the gtx 570. i do have plans in the future to get more than one monitor so people have told me that ATI is the better choice due to EYEFINITY. i should note that my current monitor runs at 1920 x 1200. if i do get the hd 6970, which manufacturer would be a good one to look at?

would be great to hear all your thoughts. also, what would be the right away to choose a motherboard?

thanks

[addedon]December 22, 2011, 7:37 pm[/addedon]also, i've seen various reviews and videos on the enormous performance increase of a ssd over a hdd.

would it be worthwhile to invest in a 60GB or 120GB SSD? my idea was to get a small SSD (~60GB) to put all the games i play in it and another large hdd (~1TB) to put all my music and videos in it.

what are your thoughts?

Finalizing specs for a new gaming rig.

Proc: Phenom II 955BE
RAM: Kingston Value RAM DDR3 1333 2x2GB
Graphic Card: Sapphire HD4890 1GB Vapor-X
Mobo: MSI 790GX-GD65
PSU: Gigabyte Odin 800W
HDD: WD Caviar ST2 32MB 640GB
Pioneer DVD Burner
Casing: HAF 932
HSF: Xigmatek Archilles 1284c

Games that I wish to play : Empire : Total War, Elder Scrolls : Oblivion, Fallout 3, The Sims 3, GTA 4, FIFA 2010. Running these games on a 24'' monitor, and I want to be able to max out the graphics settings.

Any better recommendations?

Just a few quick questions though :

i) The 1333 in front of the RAM number, is that the frequency? I know better is higher, but for my gaming purposes, would I really notice a difference in performance in choosing a higher frequency RAM?

ii) Is it better to get 2 sticks of 2GB RAM to get 4GB of RAM in total, or just one stick of 4GB of RAM. Also, is it advisable to upgrade my rig to 6GB of RAM?

iii) Any real difference/noticeable difference in performance between different brands of RAM?

iv) Is the HAF932 too big for a casing and should I get a smaller one instead?

v) How important is adding the heat sink fan, and how good is the model that I stated above?

vi) For my gaming purposes, do you think I should add another 4890 to crossfire, and would 800W be overkill if I do want to crossfire?

vii) For the hard disc drive, I checked out Western Digital lately, and I don't really understand the section about RPM (Revolutions per minute?) I'm guessing higher is better but really would there be a noticeable difference in me getting a 10000 RPM hard disc compared to a 7200 RPM one? IF not, I would prefer investing in a 1TB 7200 RPM instead of a much smaller capacity 10000RPM one.

viii) Lastly, I understand for this motherboard, if I plan to run crossfire, it would run at 8x/8x for dual cards, and 16x for a single card. Should I get the FX motherboard instead, where both cards can run at 16x/16x, or really would that be overkill and I really wouldn't notice much of a difference anyway?

Thanks in advance.
Need help with graphics card choice

hey guys, i'm about to build my first gaming rig next week, and am currently trying to decide the right graphics card. these are the criterias i'm looking for :

i) i won't be playing many FPS games, but mostly games such as Empire : Total War, The Sims 3, Civilization 4, Elder Scrolls : Oblivion and other similar games.

ii) i have a 24 inch monitor, so my graphics card should be able to run at decent resolutions (1680 x 1050 seems about right?)

iii) i would like to watch 1080p movies from bluray discs.

some suggestions i have gotten from my previous thread :

i) i'm currently looking at the sapphire hd4870x2. is this a good buy? it is a bit pricey though, and i'm worried that it may be overkill for the games that i am going to play.

ii) how about the HIS hd4890? (btw, is there are difference between brands such as HIS, GECUBE, XFX and Sapphire?)

also, another side question. would i really notice a difference in gaming if i get the amd phenom ii x4 955 instead of the i7 920?

thanks in advance guys

Building A Gaming Rig - RM4000 - RM4500

Hey guys, I'm sort of in a situation here. I intend to purchase a new gaming rig but I currently study overseas and unfortunately on my part, computer parts are very expensive over in this side of the world. However, I'll be heading back to Malaysia this July.

I was thinking of purchasing the computer parts here in Malaysia then bringing it back overseas, then assembling the parts back overseas. I do believe this will be a cheaper alternative.

My main intention for this is to play games such as Empire : Total War smoothly on the highest settings, and games such as Fallout 3. I'm not too big a fan on first person shooters such as Crysis so it wouldn't bother me too much if I cannot play those games completely smoothly.

Could you guys please suggest a gaming rig for me between RM4000 - RM4500? I'm not a total computer newb, but I'm not too familiar with overclocking and my computer terms such as 'CF' or whatsoever sorry. Also, where would be the best places to buy these parts?

Thanks in advance guys

This budget would not include the monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse which I already have. Also, the monitor is 26'' so I should be gaming in pretty high definition (one would hope)
