I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but it's something I wrote based on my own experience.
It's about adaptive backlight dimming and I think people who plans to buy a new TV should read this.

A case against Adaptive Backlight Dimming

How it started
The story begins when I bought a new Panasonic TH43E410K LED TV. It is budget friendly and the only TV that openly advertise of using IPS Panel at this price point. Being built with IPS panel the TV produces excellent and accurate colors, feature I treasure most from a display. But then I notice something weird coming from the TV.

I was watching a movie when I notice there’s a shift in the overall brightness throughout the movie. It is a subtle change in brightness and it makes the viewing experiences, annoying. Like an unseen force tempering with the images, I can’t tell whether the problem comes from the source material or the TV but the feeling of uneasiness remains.

It is when I connect the TV with my PC that revealed the mystery, and its apparent problem!

Adaptive Backlight Dimming
It is a feature that will automatically adjust the backlight level, or brightness according to the scene in an effort to maximize the contrast ratio. Since the backlight on LED display is always on, the black level in dark scenes will never be completely black unlike OLED display. By automatically dimming the backlight in dark scenes this will allow the black levels reach those similar to OLED TVs.

The problem with this approach is that the overall scenes will be darker because dimming the backlight effectively cut off the light source to the rest of the images as well. In other words dark scenes become even darker. Details that were supposed to be there are lost due to the loss of backlights.

You can raise the backlight level to compensate the dimness but this causes another issue. Adaptive backlight will automatically raise the backlight level once it has detected bright scenes and raising the backlight level will make the TV too bright when bright scenes are on.

How does adaptive backlight affect users?
For me it is annoying as hell. Dark scenes become ever darker and bright scenes are too bright. With the brightness level constantly adjusting itself for the entire duration, scenes will jump from being too dark to being too bright. Watch a movie like Black Panther and you will know what I’m talking about.

Besides movies, adaptive backlight has huge implication in gaming as well. Some games required users to adjust the brightness level to match the game’s original design. Games that feature many dark levels will suffer as the TV is constantly dimming the backlight to achieve this “Fake” true black.

Final thought
I don’t understand why manufacturers such as Panasonic are forcing this feature to their customers. Nobody is asking for it and if you are going to include it anyway, at least give users the option to turn it off. As of this writing there are no way for me to turn off the adaptive backlight dimming on my Panasonic TH43E410K and my only hope is for the Panasonic service team to provide me a guide to turn this feature off. If there are no way to turn off adaptive backlight then I would strongly advice people from buying Panasonic LED TV and look for other manufacturers, or at least those who allow users to turn off this unwanted feature.

Nowhere to dispose table

Haiz just wanted to rant a bit.
I got an old PC table that I wanted to dispose of.
The table is in very bad condition and I don't feel like donating such a bad table. The only option is to dispose of it.

I stay in PJ SS2 and my condominium doesn't allow tenants to dispose of big solid waste on condo ground, even though we have 3 large dumpster u see from those construction sites. 🤦‍♂️

I don't want to simply throw it away so I called MBPJ for advice. To my surprise they say we cannot dispose of the furniture anywhere. The only option is to go to MBPJ office, fill in a request form and pay Rm 150 to book a 3 tonne lorry to pick the furniture.

I'm like WTF!!! My table is not even worth Rm 150 when I bought it and now I have to pay Rm 150 to dispose it!!

Anyone here got any idea? I really don't want to pay to dispose that old table...

Shonyun SH-306A Review

Introduction
In the sea of portable amplifiers on the market I’m fortunate enough to be given a chance to test out the Shonyun SH-306A, a sub RM 600 amplifier from China, which I would say are continuing to churn out impressive audiophile products.

Build Quality
To say the amp is well built is an understatement. The 306A feels solid with metal (I’m guessing aluminum) body and the weight is just right, not too heavy in my opinion. The amp comes with standard 3.5mm input/output and a nifty retractable volume control. You’ll notice that there is no ON/OFF switch around the 306A as it will automatically turn itself on when a plug is inserted into the output. I have no problem with the design and I like how the Shonyun logo lighted up when turned on.

Testing Method
I personally have Phonak Audeo PFE012 and ACS T15 to represent entry and mid level IEM and I’m fortunate enough to test the 306A with my brother’s Sennheiser IE 800, which represents the high end segment. For the testing, I have asked my brother and my father to join in the session so that we could have more than 1 perspective regarding the amplifier. The 306A is paired with a Fiio X3 as the only DAP for the entire testing period. Since Fiio X3 is also known for its powerful internal amp, I will be comparing the output from X3 with the 306A as well.

As for the songs I am using a few tracks from Dr. Chesky’s album that comes with Fiio X3 and a few songs from Chinese singer Zhao Peng.

Shnoyun 306A / Phonak Audeo PFE012
I started the testing with Phonak Audeo PFE012 since this IEM represents the entry level. Because the X3 is powerful enough to drive my PFE012 without external amping, my initial guess is that I would not gain much, if any benefits from amping it with 306A.

And I was right.

The difference with and without the 306A is too minute to tell and there is only a subtle hint of different sound signature coming from the 306A. This is confirmed by both my father and brother who had the same conclusion as mine, though my father did say the sound is cleaner when amping the PFE012 with 306A. My conclusion is there’s no point getting an amp that is more expensive than the IEM.

Shnoyun 306A / ACS T15
ACS T15 is where things get a little interesting. I’ve heard a slight buzzing sound when I connected my T15 to the 306A for the first time. It turns out that the Shonyun 306A is too powerful for my ACS T15 and I have to use an impedance converter to lower the output from 306A. With that, the buzzing sound is gone.

Once more benefits from such a powerful amp on a mid level IEM is not significant. The level of detail from 306A is indeed better than Fiio X3 and Fiio E11, but not by much. Since 306A is a neutral amp, there is no option to tweak the bass level and I prefer to have just a little more bass for T15 since it tends to be a little mid-forward. But that’s just my personal preference.

ACS T15 is a mid-forward IEM, and Shonyun 306A tends to bring out the best of that. It is fun to listen to Dr. Chesky’s album with the 306A as the mid and treble are so high that the clarity can sometimes cut like a knife. Unfortunately my father doesn’t really like the sound signature. Again, it’s down to individual preference.

The final IEM to play around is my brother’s Sennheiser IE 800, one of the best universal IEM on the market and I am really curious how it would sound with Shonyun 306A.

Shnoyun 306A / Sennheiser IE 800
With a retail price of almost RM 3,000, Sennheiser IE 800 is undoubtedly one of the most expensive universal IEM on the market. Fortunately my brother is crazy enough to invest in it and I’m lucky enough to test the 306A with IE800.

It is with Sennheiser IE800 that the 306A shines the most. A few moments of listening and one thing is apparent, the 306A is all about clarity. The mids and the treble are 306A strong points, with the level of details so high it really brings out the best of IE800. I have a few of Zhao Peng’s song and it sounded marvelous. The background instruments and the vocals are a few notches better than what it would sound like coming from Fiio X3 or E11. To my surprise the bass sounded better on 306A compared to FIIO E11. The bass produced by 306A is soft with deep oomph much like a loud speaker.

It really took a high end IEM such as Sennheiser IE800 to fully take advantage of Shonyun 306A. Even my brother is surprised at how much better his IE800 sounded with 306A compared to his own setup. No doubt the 306A is best paired with a high end IEM such as IE800.

Conclusion
The Shonyun 306A is a very capable amp, managing to bring out the best of Sennheiser IE800. I must admit I’m a little disappointed that my own ACS T15 did not benefit much from 306A. One has to accept that the IEM isn’t good enough for the amp. From the brief moment of using the 306A, I wonder if the amp is more suitable to be used with a headphone instead of IEM. Regrettably I don’t have any headphone to test it with and therefore I will never know.

So is the Shonyun 306A a good portable amp?

Of course it is, provided if you have IE800 class IEM, or a very high impedance IEM that require a powerful amp to drive it.
