Tomioka Optical Company, Ltd. had its origins in 1924, when Masashige Tomioka started a laboratory called Tomioka Kogaku Kenkusho in the Shin-agawa district of Tokyo to develop photographic lenses, designing optical products for military and industrial clients. From late 1949, it became the exclusive lens supplier for Yashica, becoming a Yashica affiliate/subsidiary in 1968, and named the Tomioka Optical Corporation from 1969. In 1973, the Western Carl Zeiss AG entered into a licensing agreement with the Japanese camera company Yashica to produce a series of high-quality 35 mm film cameras and lenses bearing the Contax and Zeiss brand names. In 1983 Tomioka become one member of the Kyocera ceramic group following its takeover of Yashica. It became the Kyocera Optics division and is still in business under this name. The Tomioka plant is the one where Carl Zeiss lenses are/were manufactured under contract for Japanese cameras (Carl Zeiss Japan).

This collaboration continued under Yashica's successor, Kyocera, until the latter ceased all camera production in 2005. Zeiss later produced lenses for the space industry and, more recently, has again produced high-quality 35 mm camera lenses.

The Lens Booster features a wide-angle rear converter, which effectively widens the field of view of the camera's sensor by 0.726x. It almost completely negates the 1.5x crop factor that shooters who uses 35mm film lenses on APS-C bodies have become accustomed to. Because it concentrates the light from the lens into a smaller-than-normal image circle, it also effectively increases the amount of light hitting the sensor, giving the lens a larger effective aperture than it would normally have.
