Sabah man walks 70km to avoid infecting Covid19

KOTA KINABALU: The story of a man who walked 70km over three days from here to get to his hometown of Kota Marudu (some 120km away) with a dog as his companion, is getting much attention from Internet users.

The man, identified as Alixson Mangundok, 34, had just returned from Japan where he worked on March 25 and fearing that he might carry the Covid-19 virus, chose not to take any public transport or get his relatives to pick him up.

“After reaching the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, I was screened and although the health officials said I was fine and did not show any symptoms of the virus, I was still asked to go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a more thorough screening,” he said.

After giving his samples at the hospital, the doctor told him that he can undergo self-quarantine at home and he was not required to check into the state-provided quarantine centres while waiting for his Covid-19 test results.

Earlier, Mangundok’s relatives had helped him bring back two of his larger pieces of luggage and left him with his hand-carried backpack as he thought he would be asked to check into the state-provided quarantine centres for two weeks.

“But then I was told I can undergo self-quarantine at home so, to avoid any risk to anyone, I decided to walk all the way to Kota Marudu because I am used to walking for kilometers and days from my time hunting and farming,” he said.

Prior to making the journey, Mangundok had lunch and bought two bottles of water at the hospital.

Soon after he set out on his journey, after he had passed a cemetery, a dog came up and started tagging along.

He allowed the dog, which he eventually named Hachiko (after the Japanese Akita dog known for its loyalty) to tag along.

“I thought it would leave me halfway through but it stayed with me the whole way, that is why I decided to adopt Hachiko,” Mangundok said.

Along the way, they rested at bus stops and passed by quite a number of roadblocks and made new friends, braved the rain and hot weather, as well as walked up and down hills.

“At every roadblock, the policeman and other security forces on duty would ask where I was going and when I told them that I was headed to Kota Marudu, they could not believe it but eventually I convinced them that I was not joking,” Mangundok said.

He explained his reasons and showed them his passport and letters from the hospital for proof and they would then advise him to be careful, alert and to rest in clearly lit areas.

“They also offered to help me hail rides but I declined because I have this dog and I don’t want to pose any health risk to anyone, even though the doctors said I should be clear,” he said.

Mangundok stopped by sundry shops for water and bought cans of sardines for Hachiko but did not eat anything himself as he had no appetite due to his fatigue.

On the morning of March 28, near Kg Tandasan in Kota Belud, which is halfway to Kota Marudu, Mangundok saw his brother who was driving somewhere and waved at him.

“He waved back but did not recognise me as I was shielding my face from the glare of the sun, and I had a dog with me, so he just drove off,” he said.

He said it was later when his brother’s supervisor saw him and told his brother that he was walking.

“At that point, I think they were all worried because my handphone had been dead for two days and they had not heard from me since the airport,” he said, adding his brother had then turned back and found him walking on the road.

From there, Mangundok said his brother had informed the family that he had been walking for three days and asked someone from home to send his car to him, so that he could drive home by himself and bring his new companion with him.

“I did not go see my parents upon reaching Kota Marudu but went straight to a small hut on the farm because it would be safer for everyone,” he said.

He said his first screening came out clean and on April 7, he had gone for his second Covid-19 screening at the Kota Marudu hospital.

“I won’t rest and will not meet my family until the hospital gives me confirmation that I am free from this virus. For now, Hachiko and I spend our time together at the hut,” Mangundok said.

Sabah father chases NGO van on bicycle for food

SANDAKAN, April 3 — A young father literally went the distance to feed his family — chasing an aid distribution van on a bicycle.

Fendi, a 28-year-old father of two, is among those affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) after the fish-ball factory where he worked had to be temporarily closed down.

According to Persatuan Generasi Prihatin Sabah manager, Yusnizam Yusop, Fendi approached him Monday while they were distributing food supplies in Kampung Sundang.

“I would like to ask for some help sir. I heard that you are distributing supplies, can I ask some for my wife and kids at home, please?,” he pleaded,” shared Yusnizam.

“There’s nothing to eat at home, please dear sir I beg of you.”

Fendi had cycled from Kampung Bakau, about 1.5km away, to catch up with Yunizam and the distribution van.

The charitable organisation however was unable to help that day as the supplies reserved were for another needy family.

“If we give him the supplies on that day, what about the family who were meant to have it in the first place? We felt guilty as if we had sinned for rejecting his request,” said Yusnizam.

“Before he left, I passed him my contact number so that we could find some donations for him and his family.”

The following day, Yunizam and his distribution group managed to put together some food supplies, and sent it to Fendi and his family.

Fendi’s wife is still recovering from her caesarean after delivery of their second child.

According to Yunizam, who shared the story of Fendi on his Facebook page, many had come forward and offered to help Fendi by asking for his phone and account number.

First human trial for COVID19 vaccine begins in US

The National Institutes of Health, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, has been fast-tracking work with biotech company Moderna to develop a vaccine using the genetic sequence of the new coronavirus. The trial is taking place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, where COVID-19 cases have surged and authorities have banned mass gatherings. The early-stage, or phase 1, trial will test the vaccine on 45 males and non-pregnant females between the ages of 18 and 55, according to trial details on NIH's website.

The early-stage trial will be led by Dr. Lisa Jackson, a senior investigator at Kaiser. Study participants will receive two doses of the vaccine via intramuscular injection in the upper arm approximately 28 days apart, NIH said. Each participant will be assigned to receive a 25 microgram, 100 mcg or 250 mcg dose at both vaccinations, with 15 people in each dose cohort, the agency said.

Fauci told reporters last month a vaccine may not solve "problems in the next couple of months but it certainly would be an important tool that we would have." He said it's possible the virus will prove to be seasonal, thus likely to subside in the warmer months like the flu.

In the meantime, some health authorities are using Gilead Sciences' antiviral drug Remdesivir, which was tested as a possible treatment during the Ebola outbreak. CDC director Robert Redfield said at a separate hearing last week that the drug is being used in Washington state.

Samsung offers free phone sanitising service

Samsung Malaysia is offering a free phone sanitising service to all users at its service centres and Samsung Experience stores nationwide.

Any customer can get his or her smartphone – even if it’s a non-Samsung model – cleaned with UV-C light, which sanitises the phone without the need for harsh chemicals.

The company added that it has carefully tested the sanisation devices to ensure that the UV-C light will not affect users' phone. However, Samsung said the UV-C sanitisers are from third-party suppliers so the effectiveness may vary depending on market and model.

You can also sanitise your Samsung tablet and Galaxy Smart Watch but only at The Garden and Pavilion mall in Kuala Lumpur. Use this link to find a Samsung Service centre.

According to a guideline published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as part of a precaution to curb the spread of Covid-19, people are urged to clean all "high touch" surfaces which include phones, keyboards and doorknobs on a daily basis.

PAPAR: A 42-year-old man residing in Benoni, here, who is believed to have attended the “tabligh” (Muslim religious) gathering at Sri Petaling Mosque in Kuala Lumpur from Feb 27 to March 1 has been found positive for the Covid – 19 virus.

According to a health official, the man was tested in Papar Hospital on Thursday night and was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

He became the second man in Sabah after another in Tawau who attended the event to be tested positive for the coronavirus.

Hackers Targeting Vulnerabilities of Samsung Galaxy Phone Leave Top Celebrities Vulnerable to Blackmail

A report from Dispatch, one of Korea's most reliable sources of investigative journalism has revealed A-list actors, idols, and even a famous chef have been successfully blackmailed by malicious hackers who accessed their private data through vulnerabilities of Samsung's flagship mobile device, the Galaxy.

Once hackers are able to gain access to a celebrity's phone, they have access to their text messages, photos and videos. After securing the celebrity's private data, they demand money. If the celebrity does not pay, all the data goes public.
