Vista Crashed but yet to backup

My windows vista crashed out of no where. I tried repairing and also system restore but it just doesn't work.

I am a degree student now and I have all my final year project materials in it together with my final year thesis. I have yet to backup my files and I really can't just reformat now just like tht.

So I was wondering, is it possible for me to temporarily install another windows OS (I have the ori Vista CD) without formatting my C drive first? So tht I have a windows for me to access my files in it and backup then only I do a proper formatting?

HELP NEEDED.

*devastated* Pls help.
