BALIK PULAU: A five-year-old boy fell to his death from the 13-floor unit of an apartment in Bayan Lepas here.

Muhammad Alif Hamizan Abdul Khalid was said to have fallen from the window of the unit during the 7.30am incident Tuesday.

He was alone and the window grille was unlocked.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Lai Fah Hin was at the scene and classified the incident as sudden death.

A PROSTITUTION hub in Kuala Lumpur –

Lorong Haji Taib – has also become a thriving “drive-through” centre for illegal sexual enhancement drugs.

In a series of undercover investigations, Harian Metro reported that the “traders” would set up foldable tables and small wooden boxes along the 100m stretch of road from 11pm to 4am.

They were mostly drug addicts seeking an income to finance their habit while their customers were mostly those who engaged the services of the prostitutes in the area.

Buyers in cars and on motorcycles only have to stop beside the pavement, choose their preferred drug – which was sold for about RM10 per dose – and pay the seller before moving off.

Some traders also held empty drug packets that they sold in the open. The contents were hidden near drains or behind walls so the sellers can avoid getting arrested in case of a police raid.

A seller, known as Abang Mat, told an undercover reporter that he could earn about RM50 a night after deducting expenses for food and his drug habit.

At least 10 sellers ply their trade on the street on any one night, with a distance of about 10m between each “stall”.

The Pharmacy Enforcement Division’s prevention and consumer protection section head, Mohd Shahid Yahaya, said the authorities found that the drugs were being sold in small amounts.

“Previously, they brought big bags filled with all sorts of pills to be displayed but now they carry empty packets and stash the contents elsewhere.

“A syndicate hires drug addicts and those loitering in the area to be their salesmen,” he said.

The drugs were smuggled in from other countries at RM3 a box and sold for between RM30 and RM50, according to the report.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police seized RM150,000 worth of drugs following the arrest of two men at a house in Jalan Chow Kit here last Wednesday.

City police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said the men, aged 42 and 50, were detained at about 10.30pm after several months of surveillance by the contingents' narcotics department.

"There were about 1kg of drugs believed to be methamphetamine in the house.

"Other than that, we also seized several paraphernalia believed to be used in the processing of the drugs," he said at a press conference on Monday.

Investigations revealed that the men, who worked as parking attendants, have been active for the past five years.

"Checks by us found that they had been renting the house for the past eight months.

"We believe that they have been carrying out their illicit activities elsewhere before moving in the new premise.

"The house was used to store the drugs and equipment. We are still trying to determine where the drug lab is," he said.

The men are being remanded until Wednesday.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty if convicted.

Hip-Hop menang AJL29 semalam!

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular singer Joe Flizzow and his protege Sona One came out tops at Anugerah Juara Lagu 29 (AJL29), bagging the top prize for the song Apa Khabar.

The song was composed and written by Joe and Sona One. They took home RM50,000.

Rock band Mojo won the Best Performance award of RM12,000, as voted by viewers.

AJL29's first runner-up winner was Shila Amzah with her self-composed and written song Masih Aku Cinta, while Dayang Nurfaizah won third place with Di Pintu Syurga, written by Iman Imran and composed by Tam.

Dayang Nurfaizah also picked up RM12,000 for the Best Vocal award.

With its theme Gema Dalam Muzik (Rhythm In Music), AJL29 was telecast live from Stadium Putra in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on TV3 at 9pm. It was co-hosted by AG and Scha Alyahya.

Since its inception in 1986, AJL honours the year's best songs, composers, lyricists and vocalists based on the chart show Muzik Muzik.

PETALING JAYA: The level at the Sungai Selangor dam – the state’s largest – has touched the 70% mark but water experts say there is no reason for Klang Valley folk to celebrate just yet.

Association of Water and Energy Research president S. Piarapakaran said the authorities and consumers must continue to be on alert as the dry season was expected to kick in.

Furthermore, there was the expected higher usage by domestic users and industries in preparation for Chinese New Year and Ramadan, he said.

“The current 70.18% level does not guarantee anything. The heavy reliance on the Sungai Selangor dam to service about 50% of consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will cause water to be used up quickly.

He pointed out that the level also stood at about 70% in January last year, before the prolonged dry weather led to water rationing imposed on 6.7 million users in the Klang Valley.

“We may still be at risk of water rationing. If possible, cloud seeding should be done as a precaution instead of doing it during the dry season when no suitable clouds are available,” he said when contacted.

Forum Air Malaysia, an organisation that assists the National Water Services Commission, also raised concern about the Sungai Tinggi dam, which supplements the Sungai Selangor dam.

The organisation’s senior executive Foon Weng Lian said the Sungai Tinggi dam recorded a rather low level of 63.42% on Saturday.

“If the hot and dry weather hits us again like last year, we may be in trouble. Not only do we need more rain to fall into the dams but people must continue using water wisely,” he said.

Meteorological Department spokesman Dr Hisham Mohd Anip said Malaysians could expect the current wet weather to be replaced by the dry season between January and March.

“This period is usually considered as dry months for the country except for Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

“Normally, the highest temperature will be recorded in March or April over the northern states in the peninsula and ranges between 36°C and 38°C,” he said.

Dr Hisham said during this period, northern states would experience the least rain of about 50mm a month while other parts of Malaysia would receive low rainfall of between 100mm and 200mm monthly.

However, he said the dry season would not severely affect the dam levels in Selangor as it was only a short period before the rainy inter-monsoon starts in April.

“Normally, we have a problem with water shortage during the southwest monsoon between June and September.

“This is another dry period for the country and we usually experience haze then. However, it is too soon to predict if it will be hotter or drier in this period.”

On El Nino, he said it had yet to fully develop in Malaysia and could only be confirmed in April.

“The El Nino’s initial phase started in November. Now, it is in the developing process but so far, it is expected to be a weak El Nino,” he said.
