Comes with tri-color multicoatings similar to what is found in Voigtlander HFT and T* Zeiss Lens! (Vivitar 75-205mm zoom series comparable to Vivitar Series 1 at cheaper price). Manufactured by Kiron Japan (serial# starts with 22*******) started by ex-engineers from Nikon!

Kiron was set up as a U.S. subsidiary of Kino Precision Industries Limited, Tokyo, Japan and registered as a trademark on Jan 25 1980, in order to market manually focused film camera optical lenses to the United States. Pentacon, an East German camera and lens manufacturer of the Soviet-era, was formed in 1959 through a merger/ nationalisation of several East German camera manufacturers. In 1964, Pentacon assimilated with Carl Zeiss Jena and changed their name to VEB Pentacon in 1968 after it merged with Meyer-Optik Görlitz, a famous East German optics manufacturer. Meyer-Optik Görlitz - one of Germany's most renowned lens manufacturer - was always in a special competition to Carl Zeiss Jena. Meyer Görlitz made a major coup when they lured away Dr. Paul Rudolph (the Tessar design engineer) from Zeiss Jena in 1920. Dr. Rudolph Meyer calculated for the superior optical performance of the world-famous Meyer-Optik Görlitz Makro Plasmat range of lens

Meyer Görlitz was the original developer of a number of very popular lenses carrying design names like Orestogon, Lydith, Oreston, Primotar and Trioplan after the optical designs used in the lenses. All these lenses were renamed to Pentacon and design naming was dropped. So Pentacon 50mm f1.8 is effectively a Meyer Oreston 50mm f1.8 and Pentacon 300mm f4 is actually Meyer Orestegor 300mm f4 and so on... Carl Zeiss Jena carried a couple of old Meyer designs and exported them to Western countries under 'Aus Jena', particularly Meyer Orestogon 29mm f2.8 (also named Pentacon 29mm f2.8) which was quite common in Western Europe in 80s and 90s.

According to Ravduc at dpreview.com, " the Pentacon Electric 50mm 1.8 (earlier versions called Meyer Görlitz Oreston) probably beats the Zeiss Biotar (58mm), Flektogon 35, Helios 42, 44 (58mm similar lens design as the Biotar) wide open in terms of sharpness!

Both Meyer as well as Pentacon variations of this lens were available in universal mount which are generally easily adaptable to a number of cameras, including Canon EF/EF-S and Micro 4/3 systems. Since the original Pentacon 50mm f1.8 was designed for 35mm cameras, when used on APS-C bodies like Canon with 1.6x crop factor, the lens will have a field of view similar to that of an 80mm prime on full frame body, and when used on Micro 4/3 cameras like Olympus EP1~3 & Lumix GF1~3, it will have a field of view of a 100mm prime lens at a fast lens speed of f1.8 at budget price!

The KMZ 58mm F2.0 lens 4 Auto Cosmogon is produced in the USSR by the Krasnogorsk factory. An export version with automatic diaphragm with auto and manual switch, features better than average quality control than lens from other smaller Russian lens manufacturers. The KMZ 58mm F2.0 4 Auto Cosmogon lens was designed and made at Krasnogorsk Mechanical Factory (Krasnogorskii Mechanicheskii Zavod - KMZ) is a superior Russian lens with improved all aluminlum body and optical design based on pre WWII Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm F2.0, using more modern glass and improved coatings based on Zeiss technology.

A sharp potrait lens with vivid colours, longer focal length and a deep-sunk front element which provides a slight lens shade useful at times for better flare control . At full aperture, KMZ 58mm lens 4 Auto Cosmogon is better than later M44-4 to M44-6 from other Russian lens factories because it has eight iris leaves instead of six and gives a better swirly bokeh and blurred background with no big blobs to distract you. Mathematically speaking the KMZ58mm F2.0 4 Auto Cosmogon is actually a fast lens rated at the equivalent of F1.7 at 50mm, capable of good low light photography without flash (as in zoom lens, the longer the focal length the slower is the lens and vice-versa).

(Krasnogorskij Mechanicheskij Zavod- KMZ, Mechanical Factory of Krasnogorsk) was officially founded in February 1941 at Krasnogorsk, a western suburb of Moscow on the base of evacuated optical-mechanical plant No. 69. KMZ served as a defense factory, to supply the army with optical apparatus like sights and rangefinders and also to produce precision optical equipment for the Soviet Red Army. Often abbreviated to KMZ but currently rather spelled as Krasnogorsky Zavod, is, with LOMO in St. Petersburg, is one of Russia's largest optical factories, It was the largest and best equiped lens manufacturing plant in the Soviet Union and created such product lines like the Cosmorexs, Zorkis, Zenits, Horizons and Moskvas.

After the end of WWII in 1945, KMZ began producing photographic lenses to the specifications of the Carl Zeiss corporation, whose factory in Jena had been overrun by the Soviet Red Army and its lens manufacturing facilities and equipment largely transported off as war reparations to Moscow, Russia. KMZ picked up the original Carl Zeiss designs, the coating technology, a number of lens parts and intact chunks of Schott glass to set up the optical lens manufacturing facilities. KMZ was actively helped in its lens designs by key Zeiss engineers captured by the Red Army after the fall of Hitler's Germany in WWII, and so by early 1950s the optical lens production was in full swing. The original german Schott glass taken from the Carl Zeiss Jena factory for KMZ's optical lens production did not run out until the mid- fifties and later replaced with KMZ's own optical glass produced with Zeiss know-how.

KMZ's logo is a stylized Dove prism with a light ray passing through. In Krasnogorsk, it was nicknamed the "tombstone". The logo is found on almost all KMZ products. The first version has no light ray, and was used on the FED-Zorki until around 1950. The second version was used for thirty years thereafter and is the most common. The third seems to have been adopted in the late 1970's, and is still in use. Dove prisms are named after the optician who invented them; not after the shape of the light ray.

A consequence of the former Soviet Union was structured, is that camera and lens factories were seen as integral parts of the state (as a commune) rather than independent economic units as in the West like Europe, USA and Japan. Camera/ lens factories are never profiled as separate entity with a brand name and always remained hidden behind the massive facade of trade firms and state export brand names. Their products like cameras and lens were given generic names like Zorki, Zenit, Cosmorexs, Cosmogons or Helios, Pelengs etc. The only way to connect the end products with their manufacturers was to look at their logo like KMZ, which was the largest lens factory in Russia. These logos like KMZ, LOMO were the last glints of independence of otherwise generic factories.
