Want to Ask: iMac or Mac Pro

Dear friends / fellow Lowyatians,

I am seeking this opinion on another thread too - the Apple subforum (http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=912242) - but I am also asking the same questions here in case I can get some views from those of you who have experienced Apple products before.

Would like to ask you your opinion: Which would be more suitable -
(a) A 24-inch iMac
(b) Mac Pro with 23-inch Cinema Display (or 30-inch Cinema Display)

Usage:
(1) Mainly financial-related work, portfolio management / trading (a lot of which have Javascript applications for depicting charts, etc.), traditional tools such as Excel, Powerpoint and some other specialised applications like Metastock, Value-at-Risk applications such as Palladium (if they have MAC-compatible software).
(2) Occassionally, watching movies from the comfort of a bed / sofa nearby.

Limited games, not really into that.
Also not photoshopping, etc. Not into digital photography (at the moment, anyway).

My questions are:
1. Is (b) excessive, and will (a) suffice for the above? (Because I hear a lot about (b) being good for professionals, or even scientists looking at detailed molecular structures, etc.)
2. Has anyone had any good / bad experiences regarding either option (a) or option (b)?

My last question, as I intend to buy this setup soon:
3. Can you recommend a good Apple Store in the Klang Valley, or other dealer that I should go to?

Much appreciated.

You can reply to this thread, or you can also PM me. That would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

Want to Ask: iMac or Mac Pro

Dear friends / fellow Lowyatians,

Guide: Scams - Western Union & Escrow Services

Hi - Based on the various PMs and feedback I received on my guide to sending / receiving Paypal, I realise that there are 2 new common questions - use of:
(1) Western Union
(2) Escrow services

(1) BE WARY OF SELLERS ASKING FOR WESTERN UNION SERVICES - 9 TIMES OUT OF 10, IT'S POSSIBLY FRAUD.

What's the Western Union Service? It's a wire transfer service that is meant to enable people to easily transfer funds from one point of the world to any point of the world. Is it useful? Undoubtedly so, because Western Union outlets are found all over the world. Even in a rural district of a third-world nation, you can wire your funds there.

HOWEVER, IT IS RIFE WITH FRAUDSTERS WHO KNOW HOW TO ABUSE THE SYSTEM.

You can draw the analogy that Western Union works on a very simple userid and password system.

There are 3 basic steps to the system.
(a) You go to a Western Union outlet and create a payment of US$[X], as well as create an identification key (a unique password).
(b) You communicate that identification key to the recipient.
© The recipient goes to *ANY* Western Union outlet in the world, and provides that identification key, they get their funds.

You might ask... but I know the person's name, how can he scam me?

I could call myself Abraham Lincoln, ask you to give me the ID key, and I can withdraw the money. Am I Abraham Lincoln? *checking myself* Nope, certainly not. To understand this flaw in the system, Western Union, as mentioned above, is designed for the purpose of sending money to any part of the world - even rural districts of third-world nations. In some nations, there is no national identity card system. Hence, ID checks are not required. So, in the end, you have lost your money, and for all you know, you sent your money to Abraham Lincoln. Good luck in finding Mr Abraham Lincoln

An alternative that I have often seen is where a scammer asks you to send funds to another person (perhaps, your friend). They ask you to provide confirmation on the Western Union transfer by giving them the payment details. DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM. Though you had intended to send the funds to your friend (perhaps acting as your escrow service), they can INTERCEPT THE PAYMENT WITH THE IDENTIFICATION KEY.

IN SUMMARY, ALWAYS AVOID WESTERN UNION-TYPE OF DEALS. 9 times out of 10, this will save you money.

(2) BE WARY OF THIRD-PARTY ESCROW SERVICES, ESPECIALLY "UNFAMILIAR" ONES.

What's an escrow service? You can think of an escrow service as an independent third-party. You send funds to the escrow service, the escrow service releases those funds to the seller once the buyer confirms receipt of the goods.

AN ESCROW SERVICE IS RIFE WITH FRAUD - BOTH THE SELLER AND THE BUYER CAN BE AFFECTED!

There are 3 basic steps to the system (blame it on my consultant training, I always think in 3s haha).
(a) Buyer sends funds to Escrow.
(b) Seller sends items to Buyer.
© Once Buyer confirms receipt, the Escrow releases funds to the Seller.

Fraudsters attack the system in the following manner:
(a) A fraudulent seller asks you (the potential buyer) to use an escrow system, XYZ. They might say this because it's a high-value item, and they have low credentials / reputation / feedback. Sometimes, they even say THEY DON'T TRUST YOU, and they want to use a third-party escrow to make sure the payment's safe. Once you have sent payment, the fraudulent seller disappears, and SO DOES THE ESCROW SERVICE. Because what happens is that the seller sets up a fake ESCROW SERVICE to collect the payment. All you will have is some fake company ID which was used to set up the fake ESCROW SERVICE in the first place. You don't even have the names of the people behind the business.
(b) A fraudulent buyer may say THEY DON'T TRUST YOU, and suggest that both of you use an escrow system, XYZ. Funds are sent to the escrow service. After you have sent the goods to the buyer, and you are expecting the funds from the escrow service (which is only released once buyer confirms receipt), the escrow service performs a David Copperfield and disappears! So, you are out of pocket for the goods you have sent.

There are exceptions to this - though it's more expensive, you should only use brand-name Escrow Services (an eBay approved international escrow service or www.escrow.com).

DON'T USE ANY OTHER ESCROW SERVICES - SAVE YOURSELF FROM FRAUD!

Have a good year ahead,
safe trading,

Guide to sending / receiving funds via Paypal

Hi,

Just creating a -ful guide for new users (and in some cases, seasoned veterans) who are thinking of using (or currently using) Paypal to pay for their goods or items online. It is draft, and I will keep editing and updating this in my spare time.

(1) How do you know if someone is safe / reliable enough that you can transact with them on Paypal?
Always request the Member's Information screenshot. See attached picture below.
The Member Information box will display:
(i) The seller's reputation. This is the number of Verified Paypal members who have made paypal payments to that member. Unverified members who have made payments don't count towards that score. It is very hard to increase and means that the member is less likely to defraud you. To increase this score, the member must have transacted regularly with just Verified Paypal members (e.g. often rejecting payments from Unverified members). If this score is <200, be wary...
(ii) Account status. Only deal with Verified members. Verified members have completed some steps towards verifying their identity with Paypal. If they are unverified members, be wary...
(iii) Account type. Preferably, only deal with Premier / Business account holders. These are members who regularly transact on Paypal and pay commission charges to Paypal. This means they are less likely to cheat you. If they are personal account holders, be wary...
(iv) Account Creation Date & Paypal Member For. This shows how long he / she has been on Paypal. If they have been on Paypal for some time, they have often built up a track record on Paypal - they are less likely to cheat you and get their account suspended. If the user has been on Paypal less than 2 years, be wary...

(2) How do you "test" if a Paypal account exists?
I usually create a Money Request for US$0.01 with the subject line "test". Once this Money Request is sent, it tells me:
(i) If the account exists. If it doesn't exist, Paypal will let you know that the email address has not been registered to use a Paypal service. In which case, the Paypal account, once created, is totally new! Be wary...
(ii) The name of the person behind the Paypal email (or at least, the name that is registered to that Paypal account). If the name differs from the person you expected to be dealing with, be wary...
(iii) The verified / unverified status of the recipient's account. If it's unverified, be wary...
(iv) The personal / premier / business type of the recipient's account. If it's personal account, be wary...
(v) The Paypal rating of the recipient's account. If it's a low rating, e.g. below 200, be wary...

Feel free to PM me with questions or suggestions, and I will improve / update this guide.
